And that result is why Spurs will be nowhere near the title, as usual. Won't be the last time this season we see them lose a 'easy' home game like that.

  4. 'We know this situation can unsettle the group'published at 19:11 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    Tottenham 0-1 Newcastle

    Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to BBC Sport: "I am very disappointed with the result and the performance. We conceded a cheap goal and it is not easy to come back after that.

"You need the capacity to step up in this type of situation but we didn't show that quality today. When the ball arrives in the last third you need something from the talent and quality we have there and today we didn't have that."

Asked whether he expects any players to leave before the European transfer window closes: "We are waiting to see what happens. It's not an easy situation. This season we have a lot of individual circumstances and we need to wait. We know this can unsettle the group but we know in 10 days it will finish and things will be clear."

  5. 'Hopefully that will shut a few people up'published at 19:09 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    Tottenham 0-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

More from Steve Bruce for BBC Match of the Day: "We needed a bit of courage and thankfully the players had that from the first whistle. We have tried to quieten the storm. Hopefully that will shut a few people up a little bit. After two games, it’s been hard to get that criticism. We have had to ride it.

"I hope that gives us a little a bit of time. It is only the first win but we have seen some big performances today. They only thing you can do is show that it means something to play for the club. All week we have been working on it."

On Joelinton's winning goal: "A lot of the players have only been here for a mater of weeks and it takes time to get used to the Premier League. I am delighted that Joelinton got the goal today. We played him a lot better today, it worked and he will be delighted to get the goal."

  6. 'I cannot find excuses'published at 19:07 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    Tottenham 0-1 Newcastle

    Tottenham Hotspur

More from Mauricio Pochettino when asked about whether the absence of Christian Eriksen from the starting line-up - the Dane has been linked with a move away - was a factor in the result:

"When you lose, the players who don't play are the best. With Christian we win and we lose a lot of games. I accept that that situation is like this. If we won 3-0 today no one talks about different names.

"I cannot find excuses about the transfer window being open to justify that performance or the result. We cannot find the way to be solid and to have consistency for different reasons.

"I am going to be happy in 10 days after we play Arsenal when the transfer window closes in Europe and to have the player involved until the transfer window again in January."

Adam Byrne: Burnley defensively solid and Barnes took his chance well, but such an ugly team, time-wasting from the moment they scored and constant hoofing. Wolves were v below par but at least they tried to play.

Lee Hounslow: Shocking Spurs, saying we're ready to contend for titles based on last week's lucky point this is where we are at the moment, mid table!

  8. 'I'll be happy when the window closes'published at 19:03 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    Tottenham 0-1 Newcastle

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to Sky Sports: "I don't want to be critical with the team. We didn't perform as we expect. It was a very cheap goal, like against Aston Villa.

"We didn't create - we had possession but we didn't create enough chances. We didn't find the capacity to break down their defensive line. They were very organised and defended deep.

"I'm very disappointed with the performance and with the result.

"Sometimes it's not about possession - it's about individual actions and today we didn't show the type of quality we needed."

  9. 'We're a different animal to last season'published at 19:01 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    FT: Wolves 1-1 Burnley

    Burnley

Burnley manager Sean Dyche, speaking to Match of the Day: "We deserved to win the game. I thought we were out of the box sharp, we mixed the play enough to cause them problems. They didn’t cause us too many problems.

"I’m not going to knock the players because their mentality is good. It was just taken away by a late decision.

"We’re looking a different animal to last season, which is important at this early stage. There’s a real good energy, some good quality and some good moments.

"They hit the post, to be fair, but I don’t think they had too much today. Defensively we were very strong."

  10. 'I hope this is a line in the sand'published at 18:59 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    Tottenham 0-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce, speaking to Sky Sports: "I am delighted for my staff and the players. We have responded in the right way from last week's game. We can talk tactics but they have to go out and perform. All-in-all I thought we thoroughly deserved the three points. We have had a tough week so we have had to respond in the right way and thankfully the players have. I think everyone is shattered not just for the game – we had the cricket on in the run up to the game! It took over in the dressing room for half an hour.

On the criticsm he has received: "The only way we can respond to criticism is like that. We came to this fantastic stadium, this fantastic club and we performed. I mean, to say I 'cannot even do a warm up' is mad. I have managed 900-odd games and over the years you would think there would be some sort of respect but I go back to the fact that whoever took over from Rafa Benitez was going to get the abuse."

On going forward: "I hope this is a line in the sand. You cannot take anything for granted in the Premier League. We have another big week, we have the [EFL] Cup game on Tuesday and then we have Watford. We just have to keep working and keep moving forwards. That’s all we can do."

  11. 'The performance was not the best'published at 18:57 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    FT: Wolves 1-1 Burnley

    Wolves

Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a tough game. Burnley are such a difficult team to play against and they do things very well. The performance, of course, was not the best.

"They are so good in holding the ball and waiting for support from the midfield. They are a fantastic team and it was tough for us. It’s something we have to improve on – playing with tiredness and making significant steps.

"It’s about taking all the reserves that we have, but I’m very proud of the boys and we have to go again on Thursday [in the Europa League]."

  12. 'I take it personally'published at 18:55 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    Tottenham 0-1 Newcastle

    Tottenham Hotspur

More from Tottenham's Son Heung-Min for BBC Match of the Day. He was asked, "surely you don't think the result was your fault?"

"I just take it personally. Whether it is my fault of the teams fault, I just do not like to lose. We need to be more clinical. We should not get that many chances and not score in the Premier League. We need to learn. We need to be strong and we need to find a better solution."

  14. 'They played only long balls'published at 18:51 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    FT: Wolves 1-1 Burnley

    Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves striker Raul Jimenez, speaking to Sky Sports: "I think [the penalty] is the right decision. When I get in possession he tried to kick the ball, then he kicked me. It came at a good moment for us.

"Maybe the point is good because we tried to score all game. They played only long balls, which was difficult for us. We have to keep going. Next week we have to get the three points.

On the Europa League: "I think the travel is something special - too many games, too much travel - but we have to adapt. If we want to be in the Europa League it’s going to be all season, so we have to adapt.”

  16. 'We had something to prove'published at 18:47 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    Tottenham 0-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle defender Paul Dummett for BBC Match of the Day: "We had to work hard as a team and we did that from the start. Everyone has worked hard from the team. It’s a difficult place to come but we have had to dig in together. Everyone stuck together, we put in a top performance. Hopefully we can push forward now. It’s only three points, there is still a long road to go but it’s a start."

On pressure from fans: "We had something to prove. It was not good enough last week. We have talked about it and knew we had to change it. We know we have to work together and we have done that. It’s a credit to everyone involved. If you switch off and wake one mistake that could lead to you losing. We have had to put in a lot of work, it was very tough.

"Being a club like Newcastle, you always have that pressure but we have a good bunch of player and we will always work hard to get the performances and the points. We came up with a game plan from start to finish and we managed to not give them any chances."

  17. 'We definitely deserved three points'published at 18:45 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    FT: Wolves 1-1 Burnley

    Burnley

Burnley striker Ashley Barnes, speaking to Sky Sports: "We definitely deserved three points. We had a few chances where we should have punished them.

"We let them back in with the last kick of the game. I’ve not seen it yet. We’ll have to look back at it and go from there.

"We knew we could cause them a lot of problems going forward. We’ve started off well – me and Woody [Chris Wood] maybe could have killed off the game, and maybe that’s cost us in the end.

"We knew they were probably going to be a bit tired and we needed to capitalise on that."

Jamie Atkinson: If that was a Rafa side everyone would be congratulating a great away performance. I hope everyone is just as complimentary to Steve Bruce, his side and tactics. Away support unreal with no trains in this weekend. It’s not all bad up North.

  19. 'We were not clinical enough'published at 18:42 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    Tottenham 0-1 Newcastle

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham forward Son Heung-Min: "The goals were missing today. We had plenty of chances but we were not clinical enough. It’s always hard against teams that play deep, it makes it more difficult. I think we had chances to score, we should have got something out of this game.

"We have only played three games, there is a long way to go. This was not the best result but we have to stay positive and go again."

On the penalty decision on the tackle on Son: "I had the ball and I didn’t see him, he came from behind. It is the referee and VAR decisions which means it was probably not a penalty."
