Manchester City's players will wear black armbands today as a mark of respect for Luis Enrique's nine-year-old daughter, Xana, who died from cancer this week.

City manager Pep Guardiola is a former team-mate of Enrique's from Barcelona and knows the family well.

Lindelof is standing still and Vestergaard has the run on him. It's a brilliant header. It's what Southampton deserve.

That's Vestergaard's first goal for the Saints. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer doesn't look too impressed. Reaction?

  5. goal

GOAL - Southampton 1-1 Manchester Unitedpublished at 58 mins

    Jannik Vestergaard

    A goal WAS coming...

From Southampton's first corner of the game David de Gea has to make his first save of the day, tipping away a Danny Ings header.

It was a good stop, but it's too easy for Kevin Danso to float the ball back in from the right and Jannik Vestergaard is head and shoulders above Victor Lindelof to get up and head into the top corner.

    Wanted it...

  6. Adams still searching in vainpublished at 13:46 British Summer Time 31 August 2019

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at St. Mary's

Southampton's summer signing from Birmingham City Che Adams is not lacking effort - but it is just not coming off for him in front of goal yet.

He had to at least his the target there but slashed it high and wide. Still waiting for his first Premier League goal.

All of the Utd players are often struggling to cope with the Soton press. But as usual, it's Pogba highlighted and his commitment questioned. Just him.

  8. CLOSE!published at 55 mins

    Southampton 0-1 Manchester United

Chance! Ah, you've got to do better than that in the Premier League!

Southampton counter well after a poor touch from Victor Lindelof, James Ward-Prowse and Sofiane Boufal link up nicely to tee up new signing Che Adams inside the area - and he slices it horribly wide.

Was a tough angle and he was under pressure but...a great chance.

Kevin Danso bulldozes his way past Aaron Wan-Bissaka but his cross is cleared before Marcus Rashford almost gets in behind at the other end. Both defences feel a touch stretched at the moment. Second goal of the game on the way?

United need to stay on the front foot. They seem to flit in and out of games at the moment, but they have to find a way of winning games.

  11. CLOSE!published at 51 mins

    Southampton 0-1 Manchester United

Out of nowhere Manchester United come alive. A ball over the top frees Marcus Rashford in behind, he hesitates a touch, the bounce isn't kind and Angus Gunn comes out well to smother his shot.

Daniel James then puts in a low cross which Rashford has a swing at, it pops away for a goal kick - although the officials give a corner...

  12. 'Redmond a big miss'published at 13:38 British Summer Time 31 August 2019

This is a big half for Southampton - they need to come out strong. They are without Redmond though and he is a big miss.

    Southampton 0-1 Manchester United

More twinkle toes from Daniel James down the United left but Jan Bednarek watches him closely and gets a good tackle in.

Cedric crosses well at the other end but Victor Lindelof is there to head clear. Still no effort on target for the Saints.

Pogba the enigma. It was ever thus.

Ashley Young bends in a free-kick from wide on the right but it's straight at Angus Gunn.

Ricky Lee Everett: The problem with Pogba - he is World Class and does the unimaginable, but when it comes to the basics he gifts the ball away far too often. Not a bad half for United, but we need that second goal for sure, maybe even a third.

James Riley: Pogba needs to step his game up. Giving the ball away far too many times in defensive positions. It's like he can't be bothered, he gets dispossessed and then is slow to get up. Frustrating to see.

Michal Koziol: Against Chelsea Pogba lost the ball very often too, particularly in the first half. And then one killer pass, one brilliant solo run, and suddenly it's a different game from him. Never discard the guy too soon. And @Daniel_James_97, external, take a bow son!

    Southampton 0-1 Manchester United

How can Southampton find a way back into this game? Like a lot of Premier League sides they looked good in that first half until it came to actually getting a goal. Shane Long is their only recognised attacking option on the bench as well.

  19. 'Positive United performance'published at 13:25 British Summer Time 31 August 2019

    Southampton 0-1 Man Utd

    Clinton Morrison
Former Crystal Palace striker on BBC Radio 5Live

I think it has been a positive performance from United, in particular Daniel James, who has been the outstanding player of the half.

Southampton started well but you want to see Ings and Adams play closer together. Maguire and Lindelof have marshalled them well though.
