  1. 'Pogba plays for himself'published at 13:18 British Summer Time 31 August 2019

    HT: Southampton 0-1 Man Utd

    Dave Merrington
Former Southampton manager on BBC Radio Solent

The last three times Pogba has been on the ball he has been caught in possession - too casual. The big problem with Pogba is that he plays for himself and not the team.

  2. HALF-TIMEpublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 31 August 2019

    Southampton 0-1 Manchester United

Southampton have looked lively, hard-working and sharp. But can't hurt the visitors.

Manchester United have been passive for large periods. But one thunderbolt from Daniel James separates the sides.

    Southampton 0-1 Manchester United

Danny Ings and Che Adams link up nicely again - they must be a pain to play against - but Adams, after twisting in behind the United defence, can only slice his cross straight out of play.

  4. 'United will need a second goal'published at 13:14 British Summer Time 31 August 2019

Former Crystal Palace striker on BBC Radio 5Live

Boufal is at the centre of it at the moment and he is causing United problems. United will need a second goal here.

Southampton ending the half as they started it, as the better side. They haven't made David de Gea work though.

  6. YELLOW CARDpublished at 40 mins

    Southampton 0-1 Manchester United

Ahhh...Danny Ings finds himself one-on-one with Victor Lindelof, yards of open grass behind, but his touch is a bad one and allows the Swede to mop up easily enough.

Harry Maguire is then booked for clattering Che Adams late. He got there as soon as he could.

Good again, Danny Ings this time, wriggles away down the right and stands up a fine ball to the far post. Sofiane Boufal really had to hit that first time but tries to cut inside and the chance, and the angle, is gone.

Not for the first time, Paul Pogba loses out within sight of his own goal. He did get a hospital pass in fairness, Saints pressing high again. Could they do better to get a shot away? Danny Ings turns down a chance and lays it off instead, with Cedric Soares' follow-up hit straight at Scott McTominay.

Southampton have looked good in spells but haven't had a shot on target.

Lee Jacobs: Have Wales got their new Gareth Bale?

Thomas Dixon: What is Jon (12:49) in Liverpool talking about? James may not always be Premier League quality, but right now in the present he undoubtedly is.

Aiden Williams: More than a few Premier League clubs will lament that his move to Leeds fell through. Sounds like Daniel James is having a brilliant start to his United career.

    Southampton 0-1 Manchester United

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is taken on by Sofiane Boufal but wins it with a cracking sliding tackle. Loves a one-on-one doesn't he. Marcus Rashford then can't hold on to the ball and a counter is killed.

Saints having a better few minutes now.

  12. Postpublished at 31 mins

    Southampton 0-1 Manchester United

Marcus Rashford nutmegs a man but then takes a bad touch when a shot was on, with the clearance smashing into Mike Dean. Saints then hassle and harry really well again to win the ball back within striking distance, but James Ward-Prowse's cross doesn't clear Ashley Young. Disappointing.

  13. 'Mata is a joy to watch'published at 13:01 British Summer Time 31 August 2019

    Southampton 0-1 Man Utd

Former Crystal Palace striker on BBC Radio 5Live

Mata is a joy to watch so far. United giving him a new deal is a great bit of business. He is so creative.

    Southampton 0-1 Manchester United

Andreas Pereira is on the right of the three men playing behind Marcus Rashford, but playing fairly narrow.

Rashford heads horribly wide, a real 50p head, but thankfully for him he was offside.

  15. 'United looking good in wide areas'published at 12:58 British Summer Time 31 August 2019

    Southampton 0-1 Man Utd

    Clinton Morrison
Former Crystal Palace striker on BBC Radio 5Live

United are looking good in wide areas. Pereira is looking really good, the same with James and the two full-backs.

    Southampton 0-1 Manchester United

Another good Juan Mata pass sends Marcus Rashford in behind, he fires over a low cross for Daniel James - but it's well cleared by a scrambling Saint at the back stick.

  17. Saints losing their waypublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 31 August 2019

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at St. Mary's

Southampton made a really bright start but the goal from Daniel James has set them right back.

Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl is cutting an increasingly agitated figure on the touchline as Saints fight to regain some momentum.

It's a bit nippy on the south coast and the Austrian has already reversed his brave decision to go for a t-shirt and is now in a tracksuit top. Wise.

    Southampton 0-1 Manchester United

Danny Ings wins a flick-on but there's no team-mate anywhere near him. Southampton have gone flat after such a stirring opening 10 minutes or so. Just stay in the game.

  19. 'United have their tails up'published at 12:54 British Summer Time 31 August 2019

    Dave Merrington
Former Southampton manager on BBC Radio Solent

United have got their tails up now. United have dominated the game since they scored.

  20. Postpublished at 23 mins

    Southampton 0-1 Manchester United

Juan Mata is, and always has been, a class player. He's just not athletic enough to play wide in the 'modern' game, right?

He has created three chances in this match, more than every other player on the field combined (two).
