  3. 'Lost the game in first half'published at 22:18 British Summer Time 20 September 2019

    FT: Southampton 1-3 Bournemouth

    Southampton

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl speaking to Sky Sports: "The finish was not important anymore. If you lose 2-1 or 3-1 it does not make too much difference. We lost the game in the first half.

"In the second half we were sharp. Had about 26 shots on goal to six from Bournemouth but the most important stat is the goals. They scored three, we scored once.

"We weren't aggressive enough and too easy in the first half. It is not easy to be 1-0 down after 10 minutes. We had a lot of blocked shots and misses near the post. It was a good performance in the second half but without a result.

"For the second goal was had a lot of players in our attacking box so it was not easy to defend.

"We showed a good reaction because we knew we needed to be brave. We changed our shape and were aggressive for the second ball. It gave us 64% possession and we had a lot of shots. Maybe we didn't deserve to take something because of our first half."

  5. 'We were devastating at times'published at 22:13 British Summer Time 20 September 2019

    Southampton 1-3 Bournemouth

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Probably the easiest goal I will score. A gift. But that's what you get for being patient. We weren't at our best, the final pass was poor.

"We are starting to be more consistent. We would probably have drawn that 2-2 in previous seasons. The defence was resilient and we got our rewards at the end.

"In periods we were good. Devastating at times. But we were also sloppy too.

"When you score goals, goals like today fall for you. It is nice to have four goals but I want more.

"We are making more history with the boys and progress with the team."

  6. The best Cherries statspublished at 22:12 British Summer Time 20 September 2019

    FT: Southampton 1-3 Bournemouth

Harry Wilson's strike was his 25th goal in English league football (excluding play-offs) with three of those coming in just five Premier League games for Bournemouth.

Since the start of last season, no player has scored more Premier League goals for Southampton than midfielder James Ward-Prowse (eight, level with Danny Ings).

And since the start of last season, Callum Wilson has been directly involved in 16 goals away from home in the Premier League (11 goals, 5 assists), more than any other player.

  7. 'It's a very nice feeling'published at 22:10 British Summer Time 20 September 2019

    FT: Southampton 1-3 Bournemouth

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It was a nice moment. We rarely get those moments in football where you get that pure emotion and joy for a few seconds. Then you start thinking about next week!

"You want the players brought down to earth because you want the focus on consistent success.

"In the first half we were okay. We didn't hit the heights we are capable of. We were scrappy and didn't keep the ball as well as I wanted but we had spirit and sometimes that's the most important thing.

"In the second half, we were reactive and looked tired and that's where we needed to show our heart to see the game out. There were some heroics from our goalkeeper too."

On being in the top four: "That's a very nice feeling at this early stage but that's all it is. We need to keep grounded."

  8. 'Football is about scoring'published at 22:08 British Summer Time 20 September 2019

    Southampton 1-3 Bournemouth

    Southampton

Southampton midfielder Oriel Romeu, speaking to Sky Sports: "We were there last 10-15 minutes and had a few chances but didn't get them in. Football is about scoring goals. The way we played was alright but in regard to scoring goals we didn't. We were doing the game plan second half but the big mistakes were in the first half and it gave us a mountain to climb.

"We were not getting enough second balls. They were playing the way they wanted, attacking us with space at the back."

Tony Pulis [below] hit the nail on head with the Burnley thing. That put a lot of suitors off. And there are a lot of foreign owners. He went back to Bournemouth and settled. The supporters love him and he loves the club. That’s maybe one of the reasons.

Why haven't bigger clubs approached Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe?

I can't explain it. There are a lot of foreign owners in the Premier League who go for foreign managers. Eddie has done a wonderful job over a long period of time. He's still got the opportunity to [get a job like that]. It might be the fact he went to Burnley and didn't do well. He desperately deserves a chance.

  12. 'We had to fight and believe'published at 22:03 British Summer Time 20 September 2019

    FT: Southampton 1-3 Bournemouth

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a very tough game. The fans are buzzing. It was a great three points. The manager said to put the ball in the box.

"It was a great ball and it fell on my head. In the second half we made it difficult for ourselves. We didn't keep hold of the ball and had to defend more.

"The last result against Everton was great so it gives you confidence. But we had to fight and believe we could win.

When Gary Neville jokes about their top four position: "It is way too early but obviously it's great to be here!"

With that last goal, you hope and pray the centre-back attacks the ball and the goalkeeper should never have been involved.

Kyle: Brilliant from Bournemouth under the cosh for much of the 2nd half yet they see it through and win 3-1. If they can start defending better with the strike power they have in their side possibly they could be the ones to challenge for the top 6

It's a fantastic start to the season for Bournemouth. Fair play to Eddie Howe and the lads. They were very positive tonight. They scored three goals, had another cancelled out and could have had a penalty.

Oh no! This is a horror show.

A long ball forward from Aaron Ramsdale causes all kinds of problems for Jan Bednarek and keeper Angus Gunn.

The two don't know what the other is doing and in the end, Callum Wilson races onto a free ball and pokes into an open net.
