  1. 'Bulgaria happy not to get pummeled'published at 18:00 British Summer Time 7 September 2019

    England 1-0 Bulgaria

    Chris Sutton
Premier League winner with Blackburn on BBC Radio 5 live

It will be interesting to see if Bulgaria come out a bit more in the second half. I don't think they will. I think they are quite happy to sit in and not get pummeled.

England too static and predictable. Barkley's lack of defensive awareness and desire is a big weakness too.

  3. 'Southgate will be fuming'published at 17:56 British Summer Time 7 September 2019

    England 1-0 Bulgaria

Former Manchester United and Republic of Ireland midfielder Roy Keane on ITV: "I know Gareth Southgate is quite a placid guy, but I think he'll be fuming at that [first-half performance from England]."

England Under-21s scored twice in the space of two second-half minutes to recover and beat Turkey 3-2 in their opening Euro 2021 qualifier on Friday.

The Young Lions suffered humiliation at this summer's European Championship, exiting at the group stage.

They made the perfect start courtesy of Eddie Nketiah but the hosts responded through Dogukan Sinik and Mert Muldur.

Nketiah stroked home from Phil Foden's pass for 2-2, before Reiss Nelson scuffed in with 15 minutes remaining.

  5. 'Get the ball wide more'published at 17:48 British Summer Time 7 September 2019

    England 1-0 Bulgaria

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

England in total control but have had a couple of lapses of concentration that allowed Bulgaria two chances. They need to get the ball wide to Rashford and Sterling more and that will allow them to hopefully add more goals.

  6. HALF-TIMEpublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 7 September 2019

    England 1-0 Bulgaria

    Just the one goal.

    Not been the best spectacle.

  7. Watford provide a distractionpublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 7 September 2019

    England 1-0 Bulgaria

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

Watford's decision to sack Javi Gracia currently providing more of a talking point than the action in front of us - not a lot to get the pulses racing so far here at Wembley.

  8. 'Should have scored'published at 17:44 British Summer Time 7 September 2019

    England 1-0 Bulgaria

    Chris Sutton
Premier League winner with Blackburn on BBC Radio 5 live

Harry Kane will feel he should have scored from that situation.

    England 1-0 Bulgaria

England were given a gift for the goal but have found it very difficult to create chances behind this Bulgaria wall.

Kieran Trippier curls in a delightful cross which Harry Kane meets, but it lacks power and is straight at goalkeeper Plamen Iliev.

    Talk about short-termism.

Why would you want to take the Watford job?

    Goal-kick to Bulgaria.

Plamen Iliev thinks about playing it short but pumps it long.

    Lesson learnt.

Not a good line-up. England flat as a pancake as normal just like the Wembley fans. England need a creative midfielder in the middle of the park. Henderson is about as creative as my little toe.

  13. YELLOW CARDpublished at 36 mins

    England 1-0 Bulgaria

Clearest booking you will ever see.

Nikolay Bodurov almost takes the shirt off of Marcus Rashford's back and is given a yellow card.

    Takes one for the team.

  14. CLOSE!published at 34 mins

    Better from England.

Marcus Rashford setting Danny Rose free down the left and a cross is played in by the Tottenham man, but Raheem Sterling's touch lets him down and Bulgaria can clear.

    England 1-0 Bulgaria

    Chris Waddle

That's two good chances Bulgaria have had now. Twice they have broken and could have scored.

    Bulgaria could be level.

Full-back Strahil Popov gets on his bike down the right and shapes in a lovely cross into the area for Galin Ivanov to head down and into the hands of Jordan Pickford.

A let-off for the hosts, who was picking him up? What were Harry Maguire and Michael Keane doing?

  18. YELLOW CARDpublished at 30 mins

    England 1-0 Bulgaria

First booking of the game goes to England defender Michael Keane for a late challenge on Marcelinho.

Can get away with that in the Premier League, not in international football though.

  19. England take advantagepublished at 17:29 British Summer Time 7 September 2019

    England 1-0 Bulgaria

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

Call me old-fashioned but I think most coaches and managers should just tell defenders and goalkeepers to completely ignore this change to the rule on goal kicks. An invitation for players who are not good enough to try to be too clever.

No complaints from England there though.
