    England 0-0 Bulgaria

Having said what we did earlier, it is England who are having to do the defending in the opening few minutes.

Harry Maguire gets his head onto a corner and the Bulgarians are growing in confidence.

It was a good move and some good passing. He will be disappointed that he hit it straight at Pickford. England can't be complacent.

  5. CLOSE!published at 5 mins

    England 0-0 Bulgaria

Like I said, Bulgaria are sitting back.

But they force the first save of the game.

A lovely move is played forward to Wanderson, whose low shot from inside the box is straight at Jordan Pickford.

    Either side...

You can see already Bulgaria are playing a five across midfield. They have one up front and he is next to Rice. For England It's a matter of when England score and hoping they score very early.

    England 0-0 Bulgaria

Bulgaria in their red shirts are camped deep inside their own half.

    5-4-1, defensive.

    Full-backs sitting back, midfielders rigid.

    England 0-0 Bulgaria

Not sure what Ross Barkley is trying there, think he tried to play it to the edge of the box.

Anyway, it eventually drops for Marcus Rashford, but the effort is blocked.

Jamie Burton: I am not sure why people want Southgate to experiment with his team tonight. We’ve failed to qualify in the past, let’s get the result first and experiment in friendlies once we have actually qualified.

Mickey Haimes: First and foremost England have to win. We've not qualified yet. It is indeed an uninspiring lineup, but there'll be time for experimentation if we go ahead today and in later games.

  16. 'We have to win matches, it's not a case of giving people caps'published at 16:46 British Summer Time 7 September 2019

    England v Bulgaria (17:00 BST)

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate has just been talking to ITV.

    On Jesse Lingard...

"We decided to send him home today. He hasn’t been able to train for the last couple of days. We don't think he'll be ready for Tuesday. We've still got 23 players [so won't call up a replacement]."

    On not fielding many youngsters...

"We're always looking at training and also at the opposition and what’s needed. We need good quality to come from the bench and change things.

"We have to win matches. It’s not a case of giving people caps. We have to make sure our performances are right, we're trying to qualify for a European Championship."

On picking Kieran Trippier instead of Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back...

"He has had a very good start to season. Last year was difficult for him but he’s got a new lease of life under Diego Simeone with a new challenge and he’s flourishing."

A bit of concern in the warm-up...

Harry Maguire had to go off for a few minutes after clashing heads with Declan Rice.

'Slabhead' is back out and OK to continue though.

What a story this is turning into...

Kosovo beat the Czech Republic to go above England at the top of Euro 2020 qualifying Group A and boost their hopes of reaching a first tournament.

The Balkan country only gained Uefa and Fifa recognition three years ago.

RB Leipzig's Patrik Schick gave the Czechs an early lead with a tidy first-time finish from 16 yards.

But Vedat Muriqi levelled with an instinctive finish and Mergim Vojvoda turned home Valon Berisha's quickly taken corner for a famous winner.
