What next for Arsenal and Unai Emery, then?

Arsenal

Speaking to BT Sport, Arsenal manager Unai Emery said: "We lost here but for the Europa League, we have the last match to achieve that. We showed an improvement in the first half and we had a lot of opportunities to score but we did not take them. The first five or ten minutes of the second half were good but then we lost control for 15 minutes and we could not change the result. We tried to come back but we did not create any big opportunities to score."

On the fans: "They helped the players and the help Granit Xhaka. At the last moment they were angry."

On leaving Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe on the bench: "We had some injuries and we needed to change David Luiz and then we had a problem with Mustafi.

"Xhaka wanted to continue playing. His match today was good and he helped the team. I am being positive but I'm also realistic and we lost against a good opponent. We have improved from our last match and we are still first and have the opportunity to qualify, but we missed the opportunity tonight."

Matt Byrne: If 7 games without a win doesn't see him sacked, I dread to think what it would take.

Bradley Bicknell: Arsenal have just completely lost their identity under Emery who looks far far far far far far far far far far far far far far far far out of his depth and this result just shows it.

Yet more from Martin Keown on BT Sport: "To have no shots in the second half suggests he's not able to make the tactical changes, to read the game well enough. He needed to make changes he wasn't capable of making in that second half. The top managers do it, they get it right, and that's what worries me. Is he really able to see the wood for trees? I don't think he's getting his head out of it and making the right decisions. He's got to be more decisive.

"We've come in from a game against Southampton who are rooted to the bottom of the table and managed 21 shots. The alarm bells were ringing coming into this match.

"I hope he gets time, I want him to turn it around. I think he's a good man - but he's lost his way. I think he will get the time because I don't think there's a ready-made replacement."

Fredi Bobic, Frankfurt sporting director, said: "We were poor in the first half and it's not like Arsenal excelled.

"The words of the head coach elicited a reaction and the players were a lot more active after that and they really deserved this win – they combined well and the goals were class."

Arsenal boss Unai Emery: "Tonight wasn't our moment but we won a lot of matches to be top of the group. Our aim is to win away to Standard Liege to finish as first. We want to do that to build our confidence and connect with the supporters. We need to win and we lost a very good opportunity. We didn't do enough to win this match.

"We lost our control of the game for 15 minutes of the second half, and they scored two goals. Then we had injuries, and Mustafi going off meant I wasn't able to make changes. We were better in the first half but in those 15, 20 minutes we lost control."

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has just been speaking to BT Sport.

Asked about whether he is concerned about his future he said: "I am thinking the match."

More from Martin Keown on BT Sport: "If the manager doesn't survive this, he will look back at this as the beginning of the end. It looked like [the players] were making the decisions.

"Confidence has ebbed away completely. No snap in their play, no real direction. Who looked really bothered out there?

"I looked to the sideline and I don't see the leadership. There's some big questions that need to be asked by the powers that be."

Arsenal legend Martin Keown, speaking on BT Sport: "I think he may well have taken the team as far as he can.

"We just witnessed an absolute shambles of a performance in that second half.

"The team selection, the team motivation, the substitutions, the performance, everything was missing here. It was a dreadful performance.

"The fans turned many years ago on Terry Neill - 37 years ago. I was at the club when it happened and things got very toxic at the club, I think we are getting close to that again.

"Is he able to motivate this team? He seems to have lost the players. The desire seems to have ebbed away.

"I think maybe the manager may be in a position where he feels he needs to step aside now. Serious questions need to be asked. This is as bad as I have seen it.

"This is relegation form. Decisions need to be made otherwise the club is going to plunge further down the table."

Linus Harrington: Difference between Wenger's troubles and Emery's is that at least under Wenger, there was an identity as to how Arsenal wanted to play. This current squad look devoid of any ideas or directions

Steve Holmes: Wonder how many Gunners fans are ruing letting Wenger leave?

John Hartson on BT Sport: "There was no urgency in the Arsenal performance. Very lacklustre, it looked like they had no direction from the manager in terms of how they were going to play.

"All in all, very disappointing and on the back of that performance - Unai Emery- they have to be starting to ask questions about his job now, they really have."

A better night for Celtic as they confirmed top spot in Europa League Group E with one game to spare after a comfortable 3-1 win over Rennes.

The victory, coupled with Lazio's 1-0 victory over CFR Cluj, means Neil Lennon's side will avoid Champions League dropouts in February's last 32.

Celtic will conclude their campaign in Romania against Cluj in two weeks in a game that is now a dead rubber.

Scathing assessment of Arsenal by Gunners legend Martin Keown in the BT Sport studio.

"We just witnessed an absolute shambles of a performance," he said.

Defeat doesn't really damage Arsenal's hopes of reaching the knockout stages because their superior head-to-head with Standard Liege, who they play in their final group game, means it would take a 5-0 defeat for the Gunners in that game to be eliminated.

That will be of little comfort for Arsenal fans, however. The bigger concern is how poor they are looking game by game.
