England boss Gareth Southgate, speaking to ITV: "I have to say the officials were on to everything very quickly.

"We reported everything immediately when we heard things. We had constant communication with fourth official and referee. I was in contact with players through the first half and at half time. We know it is an unacceptable situation.

"We have managed to make two statements by winning the game and also raising the situation to everybody. The game was stopped twice, I know for some that will not be enough."

  2. 'I have no confidence in Clarke now'published at 22:10 British Summer Time 14 October 2019

    ITV

Former England striker Ian Wright on ITV: "I'm disappointed with what the FA chairman Greg Clarke has just said. When have Uefa ever shown any strong feelings towards racism with the punishments they've applied? I have no confidence in Greg Clarke now, that's disappointing what he's just said."

  3. 'Zero tolerance is zero tolerance'published at 22:08 British Summer Time 14 October 2019

More from FA chairman Greg Clarke, speaking to ITV: "I am happy that Gareth was in control from our side. When the first event happened he got the players together and the announcement as made. Then the second incident happened and the referee asked if he wanted to go but he said it was close to half time, get to that and then review.

"They spoke to the players at half time and they wanted to get on and win it. The squad wanted to finish the game.

"I would like to see a very stringent review by Uefa. I know they take racism very seriously. One person making monkey chanting is same as 100. Zero tolerance is zero tolerance.

"We also need to address racism in England, we still have it. We should not take the moral high ground we should join a movement to drive racism out of our game.

"Uefa are going to have to think very carefully about the level of abuse they are willing to let players tolerate and they are going to have to think who they make an example of, but that is after a thorough review."

The England supporters are still in here. The rest of the stadium is empty. The England fans are extremely quiet. The other sad thing is an England fan has lost his life today. It has been a very sad trip to Sofia off the pitch.

  5. 'Happy to go out'published at 22:04 British Summer Time 14 October 2019

    England

England defender Tyrone Mings, speaking to ITV: "It was a great occasion, I made my debut, slightly overshadowed by a few disappointing chants. It was quie clear to hear on the pitch but I think we showed a great response and showed a great togetherness and hopefully let football do the talking.

"Yes absolutely. I think it (stopping the game) was effective. There was an announcement so whatever the protocol was and the correct steps taken definitely helped. We made the decision at half time to come out and I felt it was the right decision.

"Everybody was consulted - us, management, staff players, we all made a decision that we were happy to go out."

  7. Abuse 'appalling'published at 21:59 British Summer Time 14 October 2019

    Bulgaria 0-6 England

    ITV

FA chairman Greg Clarke, speaking to ITV: "I was up in the stands with some of the FA staff and we were watching the game and heard a sound which sounded like monkey chanting, we can't be sure.

"I came down and heard some more at the side of the pitch and saw some activity by a group of people dressed in black by a corner flag and it was appalling.

"I checked the team was OK and that Gareth was OK and the second half went ahead on that basis.

"We were told by officials that 50 people - the people in the corner - were thrown out half time. I asked why the other issues were not dealt with and they said they were isolated incidents not mass incidents and the protocol deals with mass incidents."

    Bulgaria 0-6 England

    ITV

Former England full-back Lee Dixon: "For years now we've always questioned Uefa about closing stadium and fines and about whether it would make a difference. I went down to the touchline in the second-half and there were still a few chants but the majority of them had left the stadium. Gareth Southgate behaved impeccably.

  15. 'They won't tolerate this anymore'published at 21:45 British Summer Time 14 October 2019

    Bulgaria 0-6 England

    ITV

Former England striker Ian Wright: "Had we not been able to implement the protocol, that is what Tyrone Mings' debut would have been marred with.

"I feel for the Bulgarian people, I really do. But you have to look at the balance. Half the stadium closed down and it does nothing.

"This [Uefa protocol] should have been in place 10-20 years ago. We have a generation of players, not just black players, who won't tolerate it anymore.

I feel really good watching this. You have so many games like this with the racial thing going on and people say beat them on the pitch, that doesn't do anything. Today they [the abusive supporters] had to leave."

The FA has tweeted the following statement...

"We can confirm that England players were subjected to abhorrent racist chanting while playing in the Euro 2020 qualifier against Bulgaria. This is unacceptable at any level of the game and our immediate focus is supporting the players and staff involved.

"As we are sadly aware, this is not the first time our players have been subjected to this level of abuse and there is no place for this kind of behaviour in society, let alone in football. We will be asking Uefa to investigate as a matter of urgency."
