    Switzerland 2-0 Republic of Ireland

Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy, speaking to Sky Sports: "Switzerland proved they were a very good side. No shock to me. They have good players, who have played together for a long time.

"They were dominant in the first half but we had a second half we can be proud of. We haven't scored that many goals. In the past we have managed to keep a clean sheet but we didn't today.

"It is a cup final. The unlikely thing was that we were going to come here and beat that team. We would have had to play to our maximum and we didn't. Beat Denmark to reach Euro 2020, I would have taken that at the start and I'll take it now."

    Switzerland 2-0 Republic of Ireland

Republic of Ireland striker Aaron Connolly, speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought we played well in the second half but the first half was not good enough and we know that.

"The pitch was tough to play on, it was tough to get a set of passes going. It was a disappointing night but there is still all to play for. I believe we can play against Denmark and get three points and qualify.

"I was proud to make my full debut but at the end of the day it ended in defeat and personally I didn't have a great game. I will go back to Brighton and try and keep my performances going there and hopefully come back in November."

  5. 'We were poor in the first half'published at 21:52 British Summer Time 15 October 2019

    Switzerland 2-0 Republic of Ireland

Republic of Ireland forward Jeff Hendrick, speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought we were pretty poor in the first half. We didn't keep the ball well enoguh and we wanted to put that right in the second half and I thought we played better. When we got into their final third maybe our final pass was not good enough.

"Denmark is a big game, we are at home. All to play for."
