Steven Davis has gone for a bit more power than he needed really, but NI are still well in the game. I think it was a penalty when you think of some of the penalties that are given in the modern game. I think he's gone for power down the middle of the goal and just got too much on it. Possibly leaning back a little bit. It's unlike him, he's usually so reliable.

  5. Will NI pay the penalty?published at 20:22 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2019

Will Northern Ireland be made to pay for that penalty miss by Steven Davis? That's the question fans inside the stadium are asking now.

The hosts are showing much more attacking intent than they did in their game against the Dutch in Rotterdam when they frustrated Ronald Koeman's side with a solid defensive set-up.

Davis, Paddy McNair, Gavin Whyte and Josh Magennis all look creative and threatening.

That in turn has left more space for the Netherlands to exploit at the other end of the pitch.

Neither side has been able to apply a clinical finishing touch to some pretty decent chances though, Davis the worst offender with that spot-kick miss of course.

  6. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 37 mins

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Netherlands

Interesting. Ronald Koeman brings off Marten de Roon, who had been booked, and on comes Davy Propper. De Roon didn't appear to be injured from what we could see.

  7. Postpublished at 36 mins

Chance for the visitors as Frenkie de Jong finds Ryan Babel - who lays it off to Daley Blind. The former Manchester United utility man shoots over.

The Dutch appear to be getting a sub ready.

Bad news for Wales - Robert Bozenik has just given Slovakia the lead against Croatia. If it stays like that, then Wales will need Slovakia to drop points against Azerbaijan on Tuesday.

The shot from Saville was going towards the goal so it stopped the ball from potentially going into the net. The Dutch have had warning signs.

Michael O'Neill is unhappy with the treatment of Steven Davis by the Dutch before the penalty - they were trying to put him off and it worked. He went for power and got too much on it.

How much could they regret that one? They were 10 minutes away from a famous win in their meeting in the Netherlands before conceding three late goals.

They're not having much luck against the Dutch.

  12. MISSED PENALTYpublished at 32 mins

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Netherlands

Oh no, captain Steven Davis fires the penalty kick well over the bar.

Northern Ireland have missed a glorious chance to take the lead.

The Dutch keeper is dragging this out with a complaint about the ball not being on the penalty spot.

  14. PENALTY TO NORTHERN IRELANDpublished at 30 mins

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Netherlands

    DRAMA!

it's not immediately clear what's happened here but the ball hits the arm of Joel Veltmans under pressure from George Saville and the referee gives a penalty.

Most of the threat from the Dutch threat is coming from the left wing and that's something Northern Ireland should be concerned about. But at least when NI are getting the ball, they're having a go at them, particularly through Gavin Whyte. There's always a midfielder waiting to take the ball off the home side's back four - their passing has been excellent. It's been a quick 25 minutes, the game has flown by.

Still 0-0 in Germany v Belarus. That would be good for NI but realistically they'll probably go on to win that one.

I should tell you the Netherlands only need a draw here to clinch their Euro 2020 place - so they won't be going all out for a winner if it's still level late on.

I don't see much of Paddy McNair at club level for Middlesbrough but he always looks really good when I see him for Northern Ireland.

  19. Postpublished at 22 mins

A great move by the Netherlands - helped by a Corry Evans slip in midfield - but luckily the offside flag goes up as Donny van de Beek finds Ryan Babel.

The Dutch have really come into the game more after that bright start from Northern Ireland. They're starting to grow in confidence and all the danger is coming down the left flank at the moment. This is the best period they've had in terms of possession.
