Now we have a proper shot as Newcastle's Allan Saint-Maximin takes on three defenders and blasts a shot wide from downtown.

Joelinton flicks a header onto Allan Saint-Maximin but it runs through to David de Gea.

The only shot so far has been a blocked Fabian Schar effort that I can't even remember.

Pretty much a full house at St James' Park. Newcastle's recent home game with Brighton was their lowest league attendance in eight years.

It's end to end. And not in a good way. A skiddy surface + two out-of-form teams = no fluency.

Newcastle are straight on the attack and win a corner within seconds. It's a great surging run from Allan Saint-Maximin and he finds Miguel Almiron, whose cross is blocked.

But the corner comes to nothing.

  12. 'A tough situation'published at 16:30 British Summer Time 6 October 2019

    Southampton 1-4 Chelsea

    Southampton

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl speaking to Match of the Day: "We started well but to be honest we are far away from our best and against the best opponents you only have the chance to take something if you play your best.

"We were too slow in our minds, too slow on the ball, they showed us every weakness we had and we have a lot of them at the moment."

On the goals conceded: "When they build up from behind and score we must say OK, but to give the chances we did against such an opponent, you cannot handle it. That was the reason we were 3-1 down in the first half. Second half was a little better but not really, we never had the chance to come back.

"Always without results in [a lack of] self confidence is normal. You must be closer to a good result than we are at the moment. We are far away from taking something and we must be working on this.

"We know it is a tough situation but we must be really hard working and that's what we will do."

  15. 'I didn't think it would start this well'published at 16:28 British Summer Time 6 October 2019

    Southampton 1-4 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea's Mason Mount, speaking to Match of the Day: "It's been going good away from home. There are little things we can work on, obviously conceding, and we had a tough period but away from home we've been very good."

On his start to the season: "You've always got to have that confidence in yourself - to be fair I probably didn't think it would go this well at the start. Everyone is working hard, you can see how much it means to us."

On Frank Lampard's influence: "It's very important. It's the whole squad - there's so much competition and you always have to stay on top of your game. The manager makes us work and try to do your best to get into team.

"It's a transitional team but we don't have that in our heads we want to get as high in the table as we can. A lot of the young boys around us have played together for a long time, it's good having these boys around you in the senior team - it's a massive achievement and now we're looking forward to international break."

  16. Manchester United's strugglespublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 6 October 2019

Newcastle v Man Utd (16:30 BST)

Manchester United's haul of nine points is their worst tally after seven games of a top-flight campaign since 1989.

The Reds have won 49 points from their 28 Premier League games under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - two fewer than they won in their final 28 matches under Jose Mourinho.

They have not won in 10 away games. They could remain winless in eight consecutive top-flight away fixtures for the first time since a run of 11 from February to September 1989.

  17. 'Collective melancholy for these two Uniteds'published at 16:25 British Summer Time 6 October 2019

Newcastle v Man Utd (16:30 BST)

    Steve Wilson
    Match of the Day commentator

Accentuate the positive' goes the old crooners' song. They won't be playing it at St James' Park.

Meeting each other may only deepen the sense of collective melancholy for these two Uniteds. This fixture used to have the nation gripped; it was a platform for thrilling attacking play which the rest couldn't even hope to emulate.

It used to be so important. But that was then.

Now Newcastle are wading in deep waters at the bottom of the table and, prior to the weekend, only goal difference is keeping Manchester United in the top half.

Newcastle's last home game attracted their lowest league attendance for eight years, and their last away game brought their heaviest defeat in four years.

Meanwhile Manchester United failed to produce a shot on target against AZ Alkmaar and haven't won away from Old Trafford since March.

  18. 'We are going to come back again to try'published at 16:25 British Summer Time 6 October 2019

    Man City 0-2 Wolves

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola tells Sky Sports: "It was not our best day. We started good, we wanted to be patient with our game because we know how good they defend. We let them run twice, got nervous a little bit and our process to create chances was not good. We had the problems on the counter-attack in the end and it was a bad day.

"They defend. They play long balls and defend, they then go on the counter. It is physical team, a strong team so know how good they are. We know their qualities and we knew how they scored the goals. We were not organised, lost balls in positions we could not lose them in.

"We had two chances, one onto the crossbar and with Bernardo Silva. They did really well.

"We are going to come back again to try."

  19. 'We can do better'published at 16:22 British Summer Time 6 October 2019

    Southampton 1-4 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard, speaking to Match of the Day: "I didn't think we started that well, even though doing so had been something we'd talked about before. The goal came at the right time and after that I felt pretty comfortable. Getting four away from home - we're scoring - so it's a nice afternoon.

"Tammy's [Abraham] performance was great, his all-round performance and his work off the ball. But I must say I thought Willian was immense - he is an example in what he was doing on and off the ball. He's a leader - not one that shouts - but in how he performs.

"Let's not get carried away, it's a long season and we feel we might have picked up more points than we've actually got. We've not been at our absolute best and we can be a lot better. We shouldn't be sloppy, at 2-0 we should go 3-0. We're scoring goals, great, but can we tighten up? Yes."

On Callum Hudson-Odoi: "I liked a lot of the stuff he did, there's competition in those wide areas now. I thought it was a really good performance, really bright stuff, I'm disappointed he didn't get his goal."

  20. 'A bad day'published at 16:21 British Summer Time 6 October 2019

    Man City 0-2 Wolves

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola tells BBC Sport: "We started decent, quite well but conceded counter-attacks. We were not at our best and when you concede a fast counter-attack, we had chances to score but it was a bad day and lost the game.

"We did not make good process, we had problems in that sense. We are a team that plays a specific way but it is a bad day, that happens sometimes.

"Kyle Walker did not feel good, he did not train well after an infection and we had to change him. Our process was not quite quick and that is why we had problems.

"When you win games, you think about the other one. Now we have the international break, then can come back and go to the other games."
