You can see our set-up is a 4-4-1-1. It's John McGinn that's playing behind Burke and Callum McGregor is sitting in with John Fleck.

    Russia 0-0 Scotland

Scotland are packing men behind the ball in their own half and trying to spring Oliver Burke whenever they can.

Suddenly, Robert Snodgrass bursts beyond Burke but he just doesn't have the legs to get away and a defender in red gets in front of the West Ham man at the edge of the penalty box.

  3. Russia strong on home soilpublished at 19:52 British Summer Time 10 October 2019

    Russia 0-0 Scotland

Russia surprised a few on their match to the last eight of their own World Cup last year but their home form has been pretty useful for some time now.

Tonight's venue, the Luzhniki Stadium, is where they toppled Spain after a penalty shoot-out in the round of 16.

Oliver Burke is all alone in the Russia half but does well to make ground before he is wiped out by Dmitri Barinov, who is lucky to avoid a booking. A few moments later. Burke gives him a dunt in an aerial challenge for a spot of payback.

Early corner for Russia as Callum McGregor is forced to make a block from the galloping Aleksei Ionov. Scotland clear at the near post.

Once you're a goalscorer, you're a goalscorer. He's been on fire recently. If Lawrence Shankland gets a chance, nine times out of ten he'll hit the target. Hopefully he'll get on the pitch at some time and that's a kick on for him and his career.

  9. To Russia with glove(s)published at 19:43 British Summer Time 10 October 2019

    Russia v Scotland (19:45)

David Marshall could be in for a busy night. The Wigan Athletic goalkeeper made some terrific stops to keep the score down against Russia at Hampden.

"Hopefully we can get a settled squad and build over the next four games for the play-offs in March," he said yesterday.

"The next four games, results-wise and performance-wise, are very important. We were as disappointed as anyone last month with the results and performances and we are looking to put that right. And obviously good results and performances breed confidence."

  11. Dzyuba is the danger manpublished at 19:40 British Summer Time 10 October 2019

    Russia v Scotland (19:45)

While Scotland are struggling to score, Russia have been pretty handy at keeping them out.

The hosts have not conceded a home goal in their last five outings.

Up front they can rely on captain Artem Dzyuba, who scored his 21st international goal in last month's 2-1 win in Glasgow.

  12. Fleck ready for long-awaited debutpublished at 19:39 British Summer Time 10 October 2019

    Russia v Scotland (19:45)

At the age of 28, John Fleck makes his Scotland debut in Moscow.

Most Tartan Army fans will remember the midfielder from his time at Rangers, where he made his debut in a pre-season friendly at the age of just 15, and earned comparisons with Wayne Rooney.

He left Ibrox in 2012 when Rangers hit those notoriously troubled financial waters, joining Coventry City, then Sheffield United in 2016.

In three years, Fleck helped Sheffield claim two promotions, and is now plying his trade in the Premier League.

It's taken a long old time, but he's finally poised to don the thistle tonight.

    Russia v Scotland (19:45)

So we've hammered home the point that getting the team in shape for the play-offs is important but there's also the matter of protecting pot three status. If Scotland fail to overhaul Cyprus and Kazakhstan it's likely to make the next World Cup qualifying draw all the harder.

A point or better tonight would be very handy.

Well this is a decent wee stadium right enough. The teams are out warming up as the crowds begin to make their way in. It’s not expected to be a sell-out because ticket prices are perceived to be too high by the Russian fans. That won’t be an issue for President Vladimir Putin who is said to be attending the match tonight. Someone told me today he often likes to turn up when Russia are expected to be victorious!

  17. 'No free hits' for Scots, warns Clarkepublished at 19:29 British Summer Time 10 October 2019

    Russia v Scotland (19:45)

Speaking at his media conference yesterday, Scotland manager Steve Clarke stressed there are "no free hits" as he vowed to push for 12 points from 12 in the four remaining qualifying matches.

"Every match you go into you want to achieve the maximum, which is three points," he added.

"I want a good performance level in the next four matches. My belief is always that if your performance level is good enough, the points will follow."

  18. Holding hitch in play-off preparationpublished at 19:27 British Summer Time 10 October 2019

    Russia v Scotland (19:45)

Scotland are at home to San Marino on Sunday - the team bottom of the Fifa rankings and without a goal in over two years.

With preparation for the play-offs in mind, it looks very much like tonight is a defensive exercise, with the Hampden game an attacking exercise.

That approach has been made all the harder by a dearth of defensive midfielders since Scott McTominay is suspended for this game and Kenny McLean and Ryan Jack are missing through injury.

James Forrest was the hero of Scotland's Nations League campaign, scoring a hat-trick in the home win over Israel and a double in the away success against Albania.

The 28-year-old Celtic winger has yet to find the net in this qualifying campaign and now finds himself on the bench for the second game running.
