Everton are looking lively and have started well. It will be whether they can keep it up for the whole game and not just this first 10 minute spell. They need a goal to get some confidence.

Aleksander: Imagine being a Champions League winner, having coached players like Kaka, Ronaldo, Lewandowski, Robben etc. And now having to coach Mason Holgate and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. What a guy

  7. Postpublished at 12 mins

    Everton 0-0 Burnley

It's Lucas Digne who steps up but the ball is headed behind off Jay Rodriguez in the wall.

He's disappointed with himself as that looked like it was hit pretty sweetly.

  8. Postpublished at 11 mins

Richarlison is brought down by Robbie Brady a metre outside the D.

The hosts will have the free-kick and Gylfi Sigurdsson and Lucas Digne are stood over it.

  9. Finally a shot on target against Popepublished at 15:10 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2019

    Everton 0-0 Burnley

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Goodison Park

Mason Holgate’s close-range shot excellently saved by Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope was the first effort he had faced on target in more than three hours of football.

His defence completely shut out both Newcastle and Bournemouth with the Clarets winning both matches 1-0.

Indeed, the last man to have a shot at Pope before Holgate was Tottenham’s Dele Alli in the 76th minute of Spurs' 5-0 win on 7 December.

  10. Postpublished at 8 mins

    Everton 0-0 Burnley

Everton are starting to flood forward now and Richarlison's influence is growing on the game.

Djibril Sidibe is fed wide and he wins a corner but the ball in is easily caught by Nick Pope.

It's a poor delivery but the hosts will be more encouraged by the last few minutes.

  11. Postpublished at 7 mins

    Everton 0-0 Burnley

    Great save by Nick Pope.

Yerry Mina heads the ball into Mason Holgate but the defender's point-blank effort is well kept out by the Burnley keeper.

The Everton defender had to do better from there.

  12. ‘A massive Goodison Park reception’published at 15:06 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2019

    Everton 0-0 Burnley

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Goodison Park

“Ladies and gentlemen please give a massive Goodison Park reception to our new manager Carlo Ancelotti.”

That is the signal for an absolutely deafening roar and a standing ovation from the home fans, who also produce the below banner of the Italian. Everton have not won a trophy in 24 and a half long years, but Ancelotti’s CV is bringing a lot of hope to these fans that good times are ahead for the Toffees.

A wave to the fans on all four sides of the stadium from the Italian and the Carlo Ancelotti era at Everton is under way.

    Everton 0-0 Burnley

Everton are struggling to get into any early rhythm as Gylfi Sigurdsson gives the ball away carelessly in his own half.

Burnley hand it straight back but the hosts have started slowly.

  14. Postpublished at 2 mins

    Everton 0-0 Burnley

That would have been a terrible start for Carlo Ancelotti.

Ben Mee heads the ball back across the Everton box and Jay Rodriguez nods it goalwards but Yerry Mina has to head over his own bar.

  15. 'Play for the shirt'published at 15:03 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2019

    Everton 0-0 Burnley

    Kevin Nolan
Former West Ham captain on BBC Radio 5 Live

Carlo Ancelotti has had a bit of time with the players now, so I suspect he'll be looking for discipline, tenacity and people wanting to play for the shirt. He'll also want to see if the message he's put across this week has sunk in with his players.

For Ancelotti, if he can see that a player has taken on board everything he has said, then that is so important and he'll automatically think: 'this is the player for me and one I can work with.'

Burnley already have one victory over Everton this season as Jeff Hendrick’s goal gave them a 1-0 win at Turf Moor back in October.

The Clarets have won two in a row and another victory could take Sean Dyche’s side up to eighth in the table.

So Duncan Ferguson’s brief spell as interim boss of his beloved Everton is over, but it certainly will not be forgotten.

He galvanised a club that had lost three on the bounce before sacking Marco Silva, demanded and got passion and commitment from his players and produced some memorable moments.

From hugging and lifting ball boys in the air when his team scored, getting soaked wearing just a shirt in heavy Manchester rain to hauling an ineffective striker off 19 minutes after he had come on, Ferguson’s style was certainly unorthodox.

But also very successful. A 3-1 win over Chelsea and draws against Manchester United and Arsenal mean the Premier League table looks a lot healthier for Carlo Ancelotti now than it did three weeks ago when Silva was dismissed. Ferguson will still be on the touchline though today, as part of Ancelotti’s backroom team.
