Carlo Ancelotti takes over just as Everton are enjoying their longest unbeaten run of the season; that said he now becomes the fifth manager in six years to try to rectify the club's inconsistencies.

In the long term they will have top-four aspirations at a new £500m stadium but Ancelotti's much more immediate aim will be to gather the 21 further points necessary to stave off any outside relegation concerns.

It all begins with the unique threat which Burnley possess. The prospect of outsmarting a three-time Champions League winner is exactly the kind of challenge which Sean Dyche will relish.

Carlo Ancelotti calls this a "very special day" for him in his first programme notes as Everton manager. He insists the ultimate goal is to win honours but "it is not going to happen overnight".

His first task is to continue the work of Duncan Ferguson as Everton face Burnley looking to make it four Premier League matches unbeaten.

It is just over eight years and seven months since Carlo Ancelotti was sacked in a corridor at Goodison Park, after the Toffees had beaten his Chelsea side 1-0 in the last game of 2010-11 as a season without silverware saw him dismissed, even though he had won the Premier League and FA Cup 12 months earlier.

Since then he’s won Ligue 1 with Paris St-Germain, the Champions League, Copa del Rey, Uefa Super Cup and the Club World Cup with Real Madrid, the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich and, as recently as earlier this month, guided Napoli into the last 16 of the Champions League.

But now he’s back in the Premier League as 15th-placed Everton have made a huge statement of intent by appointing Ancelotti, a three-time Champions League winner as a manager after two European Cup successes as a player.

Ancelotti’s talking a good game, saying he can deliver Champions League football to Goodison Park in the next four and a half years. First, he needs to get them away from relegation danger with a Burnley side in the top half their opponents today.
