Lyon will be the team Glasgow City will most look to avoid – aside from four consecutive Champions League titles, they have a dangerous weapon in Ada Hegerberg.

The striker won the inaugural Women’s Ballon d’Or last year and at just 24-years-old is already the highest scorer in the history of the competition with 53 goals in 50 appearances.

Last year’s finalists Barcelona cruised to the quarters with an 8-1 aggregate win over Minsk and would be very difficult opponents.

Scotland’s Kim Little helped Arsenal progress – she scored two penalties in the 13-2 aggregate win over Slavia Prague.

Paris Saint-Germain were the team to end City’s European success in 2015 in the quarters – they beat them 7-0 over the two legs.

Atletico Madrid put Manchester City out of this year’s competition, while Bayern Munich defeated Hibs 10-1 on aggregate the last time they faced Scottish opposition in 2016, and Wolfsburg won their last-16 tie against Twente 7-0 over two legs.

Simply put, whoever City face in the next round will be a top-class side.

City have a long time to gather their breath after that incredible game, before they find out their quarter-final opponents – the draw takes place over a week from now on Friday November 8.

Also in the hat for the last eight draw are Arsenal, Paris, Atletico Madrid, Wolfsburg, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and six-time winners Lyon.

Scott Booth will have plenty of time to prepare his side for whoever they may face – the first leg will be played either March 24 or 25.

Winning penalty taker Jo Love: "I've missed penalties in the past that have cost us but hopefully that's over now.

"Everyone stepped up tonight and it's been the same all season.

"I've got no preference for who we play - it'll be absoutely ridiculous whoever we get. We got a bit of a doing the last time we got to the quarters (against Paris). Maybe Arsenal, to see a couple of friends!"

"It's hard to put into words - I don't know how I fell, didn't even know that was the last penalty!

City head coach Scott Booth speaks breathlessly after the match: "It took your breath away, that one. It didn't go to plan first-half but we came out and played really brave football second-half.

"They bullied us a little in the first-half but we came out and created chances, hit the bar, controlled the game for a lot. It would have been nice to get the goal earlier but to go through is incredible and to win it on penalties was amazing.

"She (Lee Alexander) kept us in it. Sometimes the keeper gets those moments and she deserves her moment but as a squad and team it was incredible.

"This is what weve been striving for for four and a half years - to get over that line and make the quarter-finals is amazing.

"We'll take anyone now because they'll all be different class - the top teams in Europe."

Abilda is stopped by Lee Alexander - the City keeper has had an incredible performance and truly deserves to win this for her side. Eilish McSorley scores to put City 2-1 up after three penalties each.

Brondby put the second penalty away, but Kirsty Howat misses - the keeper guesses and dives to her right to palm it away. Brondby to take the lead next.

City will be lamenting not testing the Brondby keeper - no shots on target throughout the entire game.

After extra-time, nothing has separated the teams over the two legs.

Lee Alexander has been in spectacular form in the City goal - she'll hope she can carry that form through to the penalty shootout.

Eilish McSorley comes on for Sam Kerr - a change that is likely with penalties in mind.

Leanne Ross lifts a free-kick given 20 yards out over the wall - it curves just past the post. City have had so many chances but still not testing the Brondby keeper as we enter the last couple of minutes.

Hayley Sinclair and Carly Girasoli are on for the home side - it looks a straight switch for fellow attackers Hayley Lauder and Clare Shine. We're into the final few minutes before this tie will come down to penalty kicks.

Nicola Docherty wins a free-kick on the left that is floated in by Leanne Ross but cleared for a corner - Hayley Lauder threatens once more from the resulting corner, volleying towards goal, but it's headed away once more by the Brondby defence. Lee Alexander, after a very busy first 90 minutes, has barely had to do anything in extra-time.

Incidentally, Scot Kim Little had a much less stressful night than the one that continues here in Glasgow - her second penalty of the two legs helped Arsenal to a 13-2 victory on aggregate over Slavia Prague to send them into the quarter-finals. City continue their bid to join them with some good possession and eventually Kirsty Howat fizzes it across goal from the right - Hayley Lauder just unable to turn it in at the near post.
