On answering what Matic will bring to the team

Looking at performances, not much. He's going to try to protect the back four. It's more of a 4-3-3.

Jesse Lingard has gone off, and there were isolated cheers. I wasn't too sure whether they were from City or United fans.

Before the second leg on the 29th, Man United have to play Liverpool in the Premier League on the 19th.... at Anfield. I wonder what the most goals United have conceded in the same month is?

    George

As a Liverpool fan, my mind has been confused. On one hand I want United to do badly but on the other not badly enough for Ole to get the sack since with him in charge they will never win anything. I think that after this performance, sadly he has to go meaning United could eventually (in some years I hope) rise again.

Sir Alex Ferguson is sitting next to Steve McClaren, rolling back the years. Will they get anything to cheer tonight? Kevin de Bruyne finds Raheem Sterling in space on the edge of the area and his shot is charged down.

Good early ball from Andreas Pereira sends Marcus Rashford away down the left, they work it inside and Brandon Williams ends up having a shot with his right foot that just about reaches the goal. It is a shot on target though and that's progress for the hosts.

I have a feeling this sub may not go down that well - Nemanja Matic is on at the break for Jesse Lingard.

  7. United still doing a bit better than Burtonpublished at 21:00 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2020

    Chris Bevan

A small pocket of United fans in the Stretford End were singing their old favourite 'Always look on the bright side of life' amid the boos as their players walked off a the break.

And I do have one (small) positive for them - so far their team are doing slightly better than Burton Albion did against City in last season's Carabao Cup semi-final.

City were 4-0 up against the League One side at half-time of the first leg, and went on to win the game 9-0. Things are not quite that bad for United, not yet anyway.

Admittedly that game was at Etihad Stadium, though. City only beat Burton 1-0 away.

There are still 135 minutes left of this semi final so a three-goal comeback is not out of the question - time wise anyway.

On the other hand I wonder what the biggest ever aggregate defeat is in a semi final?

Shane O'Neil: The only players on the pitch tonight I’d be happy to see remain would be Williams, Wan-Bissaka, Rashford, and Greenwood. I wouldn’t miss any of the rest, nor the manager.

splashyellow: How many of these United fans slating Ole were doing exactly the opposite after the 2-1 win at the Etihad. Fickle.

Kris Jefferson: This Man Utd team is the epitome of mediocre. Some class individuals who can’t work as team with some who really aren’t good enough. Time for an overhaul I think, get someone like Rodgers in (if he’d even come) to start a Kloppesque project over a few years

There were boos from Manchester United supporters as the half-time whistle blow just then and more as the players headed into the tunnel.

This is a chastening evening for the hosts.

United have been poor but let's give all the credit to how good City have been.

Ferass: Even if City score 7 #Ole, external will come out and say it’s a process and we are rebuilding and he will most likely be smiling. NO UNITED FAN IS SMILING. Ole is clueless and has no tactical awareness.

Ben Peterson: Just when you think this team can’t get worse, they put up this utterly pathetic, shambolic, horrendous, miserable display. New low after new low at Man Utd
