No Aguero or Jesus tonight so I expected Raheem Sterling to be through the middle for City but Sterling pops up on the left to run in and get a cross in. Nobody as a striker in these very early stages.

Wayne Rooney is here tonight watching his old club.

Rooney is the greatest goalscorer in Manchester derby history, with 11.

He also scored the injury-time winner that sent United to Wembley when the sides last met in an EFL Cup semi-final in 2010.

Jesse Lingard has shown signs of improvement. He scored in the Europa League against Astana when he captained.

Since that game he has been better albeit without an assist or a goal.

I think it's a huge disappointment for United... Martial's illness. When he's in the side they're a different side.

Mason Greenwood - will he play on the outside and Marcus Rashford as a centre-forward?

If Jesse Lingard and Greenwood play as 10 and 9 - will it be enough?

Daniel James hasn't scored since August. Greenwood has been asked to step up because of Martial.

There are only around 3,000 City fans in a corner of Old Trafford tonight (officially, anyway), in a small pocket to my right.

They are surrounded by yellow jackets of police and stewards so are not hard to spot, but they are making themselves heard too - with a quick blast of 'We are City, super City from Maine Road' to let everyone know they are here - and it did not take the Stretford End long to respond in kind.

The only reason City will sign someone is if they can play in the Champions League. City have spent a fortune on defenders.

Nobody expects players like Aymeric Laporte to get injured. Who would have thought they'd be so far off the Premier League title and that a 34-year old midfielder would be their best defender?

  14. 'United one of the best on the break'published at 19:47 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2020

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola: "I decide this team. For these players, for the way we want to play.

"They have an incredible team on the counter-attack, one of the best in the world. We have to control that situation or it will be impossible to reach the final.

"We will have lots of passes and hurt them at the right times. Two good teams fighting for the second title of the season."

It’s a bit chilly tonight in Manchester tonight - definitely 'big coat' weather - and the word is there are going to be a fair few empty red seats (although not quite as many as in this picture to be fair - there are still more than 20 minutes to go until kick-off).

United’s stewards are going to be on the look out for noisy neighbours too.

Any City fans sitting among the United supporters at Old Trafford because their reduced allocation meant they could not get a ticket in the away section have been warned they will be ejected if they are discovered.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sky Sports: "If we create as many chances as we did last month [against City] I will be happy. We play a good team, hopefully we can see the same. It's a young team, loads of energy.

"We have injuries at the back, Harry Maguire is out and Phil Jones is ready to come in. We have given the young lads a good chance here tonight. It's probably the biggest game they have played.

"That's the way to learn, you don't know until they get a chance in a game like this and I'm sure they will enjoy it. Every game is big for Manchester United."

  20. Can you remember City’s last League Cup defeat?published at 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2020

Man City v Man Utd (20:00 GMT)

    It's been a while...

Yes, the bad news for Manchester United is that Manchester City have made the short trip here having not lost in the Carabao Cup for a LONG time - more than three years ago, to be exact.

The good news for United? Well, that last defeat came right here - in October 2016 when Juan Mata’s goal gave them a hard-fought fourth-round victory.

Since that night, City are unbeaten in 15 ties in this competition, winning 11 and drawing four, and have won it the past two seasons.

Only Chelsea (18 games between 2004 and 2008) have had a longer unbeaten run, although they lost on penalties during that run. Liverpool (four in a row 1981-84) are the only team to have won the League Cup three years running, which is City's longer-term goal.
