"Football's Coming Home" blasts out of the loudspeakers as England's players come out to warm up.

Croatia are already out there. If I recall correctly this song and what they saw as its sentiments rankled with them before the World Cup semi-final in 2018 - so they will not enjoy this soundtrack.

  2. 'We're going to give it our all'published at 13:26 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    England

England midfielder Mason Mount speaking to BBC One:

"I'm very excited. We're all confident and looking forward to the game.

On facing Luka Modric: "I've had a little bit of experience playing against him already this season and that always helps, but this is different type of game. We'll be doing everything to stop them but we will focus on what we can do with the ball.

On playing games at Wembley: "It gives you a massive boost when fans are in the stadium and supporting you. It's going to be a tough game and with the added heat today you can feel how hot it is. It's going to be an exciting game. We're looking forward to it and we're going to give it our all."

"Three Lions" playing over the speakers at Wembley.

Flags waving from supporters and a huge roar as the outfield players come out to warm-up.

BBC commentator Guy Mowbray is going through his soundcheck and almost bursts the headphones with a scream of, "IT'S HARRY KANEEEE!!"

England fans will be hoping that happens for real and not just in rehearsals.

  5. 'Trippier decision could be difficult for England forwards'published at 13:23 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    England v Croatia (14:00 BST)

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

I'm slightly surprised at Trippier playing in that left-back position because he's never played left-back for Atletico at all this season it's always been right-back. He's played there before with England but he's never played there this season

It can be difficult for the forward as well because a lot of the time he's going to be coming in on his right foot to play in the middle rather than the left hand side when the ball can go down that line. I'll be intrigued to see how that works out.

R Hagan: As a coach myself, I recognise the problem Southgate is solving. Everyone needs to get equal playing time or their parents complain. To achieve that some players have to play out of position.

Paul Lummis: I can understand the argument for starting Trippier today - over Walker. To pick him at left back over Shaw or Chilwell is utterly absurd.

Alex Metcalf: Gareth Southgate has one of the best squads in years at his disposal and has zero idea how to use it.

This is what we have waited for. I was walking to the stadium seeing fans and people.

This is a long tournament and Gareth Southgate could be saving Jack Grealish for another game. Grealish has been the player who has unlocked things for us. He has been the go-to guy.

  8. 'England have unfair advantage'published at 13:19 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    England v Croatia (14:00 BST)

Croatia captain Luka Modric says England have an "unfair advantage" at Euro 2020 because all three of their Group D games are at Wembley Stadium.

The Three Lions host Croatia at the national stadium on Sunday in a rematch of the 2018 World Cup semi-final.

Wembley will also host England's other two group games against Scotland on 18 June and the Czech Republic on 22 June.

"Everyone would say teams at home with a crowd, that there is a slight advantage," Modric told the BBC.

  9. 'I can't believe Grealish isn't playing'published at 13:17 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    England v Croatia (14:00 BST)

    Micah Richards
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Unfortunately Jack Grealish is not playing. I can't believe it.

What people don't seem to understand, I understand Kalvin Phillips - brilliant player - and Declan Rice was sure to start. But keeping the ball is just as good as having defensive midfielders. You've seen how many players Jack can occupy. I just don't see it.

We've all fallen into the trap of Croatia, what happened in the World Cup, we have to give them respect. We've fallen into the defensive trap. Croatia will probably dictate play in the game.

Kieran Tripper at left-back, he'll do a job. But when you play full-back your body positions are completely different when you're trying to come out with the ball. There might be a ball down the side he can't play on his left foot.

I played left-back about five times. They were the five worst of my career.

Ryan Howard: Foden has played 50 games for Man City this season, Sterling 49. Meanwhile, Grealish has played 27 for Aston Villa. What's this nonsense about them "barely playing"? Why can't we just support our national team without arguing about it?

James: Hardly a creative, attacking selection. Hope they get us off to a good start though. I would have gone with Kane, Rashford & Grealish up front or just behind Kane in free roles.

Alan Parks: Take out some of those players, replace them with better players and then you've got a team! It's a pretty negative start...

  12. 'First time in a while England have exciting players'published at 13:14 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    England v Croatia (14:00 BST)

    Frank Lampard
Former England midfielder on BBC One

There's always hope and there should be hope with this group of players. We've got so many exciting players. Going back through the years, for the first time in quite a while we've got so many exiting talented players in attacking positions.

There are a lot of things we should be excited about with a dose of realism.

I find it baffling that people constantly questions Gareth's selections. He's taken us further in tournament football than any manager in the last 25 years. Only he knows what happens in training. Trust Gareth, trust the process

It just feels like football's coming home part two. It's the 25th year of the Euro 96 anniversary. I know its a different cast and different plot but and it's not 30 years of hurt but it's the last 16 months that have hurt a lot people and this can be a great reminder of how football can be so positive.

I'm not expecting England to hit the ground running at Wembley but Croatia are not the force they were and Gareth Southgate's side should get something out of the game even if they are not at their best.

Inevitably, England fans make up the vast majority of the crowd inside Wembley but there were plenty of those distinctive red and white check Croatian shirts outside the stadium waiting to come in.

They seemed confident. And why not? Croatia have a special unity and invariably show up at the major tournaments.
