Disappointed not to see Grealish start tonight. Against Croatia I thought it was the right decision but this will be a totally different kind of contest against the Scots.

Ex-England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think the England boys will be bang up for this one and it will be a fight from the start.

As players, you get that little buzz in your stomach before a game and if you're getting booed you want to silence the crowd. I think that is one of the best atmospheres I've ever played in [when England faced Scotland at Hampden Park in 2017].

You could almost feel the hatred from the Scottish fans.

    Scotland

Scotland manager Steve Clarke speaking to ITV: "I hope we put on a good performance and get something out the game because we want to stay in the tournament as long as possible."

On Billy Gilmour starting: ""Billy likes to get on the ball and make teams play he's done it for Chelsea I'm sure he can do it for Scotland as well.

"Coming here and playing two strikers is brave, we have three central defenders at the other end as well bit of mix and match - we have to respect them but we think we can cause them some problems - they will cause us problems but hopefully we get the right result."

Passion or cool heads? "Bit of both - I always say we have to play with fire in our belly and ice in our brains.

"England are favourites, probably to in the tournament, England are always going to be one of the big teams, we respect them but we don't fear them."

BBC Sport's Kelly Somers sat down with the England and Leeds United midfielder to talk sweets, his latest England cap, and much more at St George's Park.

  9. 'Yes sir, I can boogie'published at 19:31 British Summer Time 18 June 2021

Thousands of Scotland fans were in London ahead of today's game - but the skirl of the bagpipes has largely been drowned out by a 1970s disco classic.

Videos of the Tartan Army belting out Yes Sir, I Can Boogie on the streets of the English capital have been all over social media.

So how did the song become the country's unofficial national anthem?

    Jack Wilshere
Ex-England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Watching Billy Gilmour playing for a big club like Chelsea, he definitely has the temperament and the ability. I'm interested to see how he copes but I think he'll be able to manage it.

He is one who takes risks. You can tell the character of a player when he comes into a team at a young age and makes an impact. I'm looking forward to seeing him play tonight.

  12. 'We've got to have passion and discipline'published at 19:28 British Summer Time 18 June 2021

    England v Scotland (20:00 BST)

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on Luke Shaw and Reece James: "We think their technical ability with the ball is important for this game - we were really pleased with the full-backs in the last game but we have a really good depth in that area of the pitch."

On Scotland's threat: "We know they will be better with the ball, Billy Gilmour and Scott McTominay and Kieran Tierney - it's a slightly different profile for their team but I would imagine a similar tactically approach.

"The system they play is attacking anyway, Gilmour is a very good footballer and they will look to build through him - he will add to that part of their game.

Passion or cool heads? "We have to have both, we've got to be ready for the game, we've got to find that performance level where the motivation is high and so is the performance but discipline is crucial, we have to keep everyone on the pitch and not make too many fouls."

  13. 'Changes show England's quality'published at 19:26 British Summer Time 18 June 2021

    England v Scotland (20:00 BST)

    Micah Richards
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It shows the quality England have [in the full-back positions].

You expect England to dominate the ball. We have seen Reece James play in a back three, he's so comfortable. We know how good Luke Shaw is at linking up play.

I'm intrigued to see how it pans out. If Phil Foden plays on the right, it will be interesting to see if he is asked to do a lot of defensive work or whether they'll leave James in a one-on-one battle.

    England v Scotland (20:00 BST)

    England

England midfielder Declan Rice speaking to ITV: "The biggest [game of his career] - the rivalry over the years and how much it's spoken about. We want to go out there and get the job done and qualify. It's a massive night all round and we need to put in a good performance."

On Scotland's threat: "They've got good players, they were unlucky against Czech Republic we need to be wary of the way they play, they have good players in Kieran Tierney and Andy Robertson we'll be ready for anything - we want to impose the way we play and hopefully score a couple."

On being favourites: "The mentality has changed - we never go into a game expecting to win - we just want to think we can play well to win the game."

    England v Scotland (20:00 BST)

    Micah Richards
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

When I was in the England squad under Fabio Capello the atmosphere wasn’t a good one.

We all knew he was a great coach, but you couldn’t go and express yourself.

If you look at the environment now, the players are able to show their true personality and that’s what it is about.

In terms of expectation levels, just go with it, see where it goes. The whole nation is behind this squad now and you can feel it.

Before it felt like people were setting them up to fail, but now we are all together and so have a way better chance of success than 10 years ago.

If you're Scottish, what is the correct way to celebrate your men's national team qualifying for a major tournament for the first time in your life?

Buy a replica shirt? Hang a flag out of the window?

How about finding streets matching the names of every player in the squad, then travelling to each one for a selfie?

For 20-year-old David Little from Glasgow the answer was "all of the above".

    Charlie Adam
Former Scotland midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

We know it will require an unbelievable effort for Scotland to get anything out of this game.

England have some unbelievable players, but if Scotland are solid defensively and keep their shape then they have a chance.
