John Petrie: This is going to be an energy sapping game given the conditions and the pace. England's bench is much the stronger - could be important.

Nick Hughes: Mings and Stones look comfortable together, have pace, is it a given Maguire walks back into the starting lineup?

  2. CLOSE!published at 29 mins

    England 0-0 Scotland

What a delivery from Reece James down that right flank, in behind the defence and Harry Kane stretches full length to get his head on it but the effort - in very wet conditions - skips wide.

This is Luke Shaw’s first appearance for England at a major tournament since June 2014 against Costa Rica in the World Cup, 2,551 days ago.

The only two players with longer gaps between tournament appearances for the Three Lions are Martin Keown (2,917 days, 1992-2000) and Tony Adams (2,912 days, 1988-96).

Jon Evans: Scotland look like they're running out of puff already.

Robin Johnson: If the Scots has played like this against the Czechs they’d have easily won.

  6. 'England frustrated'published at 20:27 British Summer Time 18 June 2021

    England 0-0 Scotland

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

    Scotland are frustrating England.

John Stones and Mason Mount could have scored but other than that there's not much movement ahead from the England players - and lots of Scotland players in their way.

Scotland aren't giving them any time, but it's very demanding and I'm not sure how long they will be able to keep this up.

Harry Kane is yet to have a touch in the Scotland box and has seen very little of the ball so far.

Chrissymitch: Get Kane off, offers absolutely nothing. Keeps dropping deep and taking up space. Stay up top man.

Antony Short: Is Kane fit? looks half a yard off it to me.

    England 0-0 Scotland

Grant Hanley has Harry Kane on lockdown at the moment.

  10. Postpublished at 24 mins

    England 0-0 Scotland

Nice from Scott McTominay, dispossessing Raheem Sterling on the edge of the box before carrying the ball up the pitch with his leggy strides.

He does that so well for Manchester United and is bringing it to the national team too.

  11. Gilmour up for the fightpublished at 20:24 British Summer Time 18 June 2021

    England 0-0 Scotland

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley Stadium

Billy Gilmour may be small in stature but he wasn't having it when Chelsea team-mate Mason Mount tried to engage him in a physical challenge. Good old fashioned shrug off sent the England man on his way.

  12. CLOSE!published at 22 mins

    England 0-0 Scotland

Not a bad effort from Kieran Tierney, taking the ball on his chest and smashing a shot from 25 yards out with his weaker left foot but it flies wide of Jordan Pickford's goal.

That kept the Everton goalkeeper interested, there was half a skip to get across to it.

  13. Postpublished at 21 mins

    England 0-0 Scotland

Jeers from the England supporters as Scotland get a spell of position for the first time.

John Stones hurtling across to head away, but is climbing all over Lyndon Dykes.

    Chris Waddle

England are starting to get a lot of the ball without any pressure on it.

  15. Postpublished at 20 mins

    England 0-0 Scotland

This time Mason Mount's corner is headed away by a towering Scott McTominay header.

Better defending from the set-piece that time from Scotland.

England come again down the left, Luke Shaw exchanging passes with Mason Mount and earning a corner.

  18. Stones lets Scotland escapepublished at 20:18 British Summer Time 18 June 2021

    England 0-0 Scotland

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley Stadium

England should be ahead. Great leap by John Stones but he had to score. Scotland manager Steve Clarke will not be happy that he was left totally unmarked.

    Lively start. No surprise there.

I've been looking forward to this game for many many months. My biggest fear was a damp squib, needn't have worried! Cracking game, we should play each other annually...

    England 0-0 Scotland

What a take from Phil Foden, trapping the ball which drops over his shoulder and then curling wide of goal.

The flag is up anyway, but that touch was delightful.
