Adam Kitchiner: All this talk of Scotland controlling the game. They're hanging in. England still in second gear. Just depends if they can up it and take the game away from Scotland.

    Chris Waddle

It's a completely different England team from the first half. They are moving the ball a lot quicker and there are more options.

  3. GREAT SAVE!published at 48 mins

    England 0-0 Scotland

England are quick out of the traps in the second period, Raheem Sterling almost finds Phil Foden before Mason Mount smacks a 25 yard drive towards the near post which David Marshall palms away.

It wasn't that convincing from the Scotland goalkeeper but does the job.

England finally have a shot on target.

Jack Grealish takes his place on the bench in between Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho.

One of those to come on? All three perhaps?

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

The benches will make a difference, I'm absolutely convinced about it.

In terms of who Scotland don't want to come on for England, it's Jack Grealish.

The midfield is not in control of this game. Southgate hasn't figured it out in time, it's obvious. There are some good players, but they aren't clicking, and I think there are better options on the bench that he is overlooking for whatever reason, Bellingham and Grealish are the most obvious

    Rob, London

This is a game that needs a goal, 0-0 doesn't suit either team.

    No sign of Jack Grealish.

Away we go for the second period.

Scotland will be hoping for more of the same.

  10. 'This is England, at home and they're not threatening'published at 21:00 British Summer Time 18 June 2021

    England 0-0 Scotland

    ITV

ITV's pundits have been discussing what England need to do in the second half:

Ian Wright: We do need someone who can do something different. You need someone who can get on the ball and commit a player, commit someone, drag someone out and go past them and see if we can create something. No shots on target for us.

Roy Keane: They're all taking too many touches at the back. Rice is coming back, doing nothing. He's coming back and giving sidewards passes. Not good enough.

Graeme Souness: They need a Billy Gilmour. They need a maestro. They've got Phillips and Rice - two peas out of the same pod. This is England, at home and they're not threatening. But I saw that against Croatia. I think the two central midfielders, you need a different type of player in there in the centre. Billy Gilmour, unfortunately he's Scottish.

  11. Scotland 'had the best chances'published at 20:59 British Summer Time 18 June 2021

    England 0-0 Scotland

    ITV

Former midfielder Graeme Souness talking about Scotland's first-half performance on ITV: They've been fabulous. Slightly concerned that the energy might not be there for 90 minutes. Billy Gilmour the best player on the pitch. Never gives the ball away which is fabulous for a midfielder. I'm chuffed. We've had the best chances and with a wee bit off luck you never know. We're very much in the game but we might need some fresh legs in the second half.

This is the first time England have failed to record a shot on target in the first half of a match at Wembley since a friendly against Germany in November 2017.

It is the first time in a competitive match since a European Championship qualifier versus Slovenia in November 2014.

  14. 'Magnificent Scotland'published at 20:57 British Summer Time 18 June 2021

    England 0-0 Scotland

    Charlie Adam
Former Scotland midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think Scotland have been magnificent. England haven't moved the ball quick enough and everything seems to be played in front of Scotland.

At the moment it's great for Scotland, and for England it's not at the level they would expect.

Is Harry Kane on the pitch?

    Will, Oxford

Feels like England are playing with 10 men, Harry Kane has done literally nothing. I would love to see his touches and pass completion stats.

    Matt, Reading

England need some more pace. Foden is hugely technical but he's completely nullified here. Get some pace in Rashford or Grealish to run behind.

  17. 'Scotland are using the occasion'published at 20:52 British Summer Time 18 June 2021

    England 0-0 Scotland

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's being played at an amazing pace. Scotland can be delighted with that. The fans and Steve Clarke will be be very proud of them, you can't ask for much more.

The concern is can they continue to do it for 90 minutes, and also the players England can bring on.

Scotland are using the occasion and have set it up to be a big battle. It's being played the way Scotland want it to be played - England want to take the sting out of it but Scotland haven't allowed that.

Michael Reid: Let's be honest. Scotland have been much the better team.

Dawesy: Taxi for Sterling. Get Grealish on and use his creativity to breakdown teams that defend deep.

Kit Beaupre: Absolutely no creativity in the midfield, was the same against Croatia. Been incredibly boring to watch. Need a spark from somewhere otherwise we’ll struggle against a decent teamish on and use his creativity to breakdown teams that defend deep.
