  1. McGinn seeks Scotland 'bravery, commitment & quality'published at 19:26 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

    Croatia v Scotland (20:00)

Scotland midfielder John McGinn, speaking to STV, says: "The boys know the task in hand - three points to make history.

"We've watched a lot of Croatia recently and even though they've had criticism they're still a top side.

"We need the same belief and determination as the other night at Wembley. We played with bravery, commitment and quality - if we do that again we give ourselves every chance."

  2. A pattern to provide some Scottish optimism?published at 19:24 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

    Croatia v Scotland (20:00)

In their previous five European Championship tournaments, Croatia, who didn't make it in 2000, have alternated between progressing from the group stage (1996, 2008 and 2016) and going out at the group stage (2004 and 2012).

    Will the trend continue?

  3. Eleventh time lucky?published at 19:22 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

    Croatia v Scotland (20:00)

Scotland's run of never getting out of the group stage at a major finals takes in eight World Cups and two European Championships.

There have been a few near misses along the way and some serious heartache.

1974 stands out as particularly painful, with Willie Ormond's side unbeaten in a section that included defending champions Brazil.

Goal difference was also our undoing in 1978 and 1982 and at Euro 96, when a late consolation strike for the Netherlands against England edged us out.

    Croatia v Scotland (20:00)

    Charlie Adam
Former Scotland midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

We need to win the match but we don't need to win it in the first minute. We need to start the game well like we did on Friday night and if we do that then we'll be in an amongst it.

Croatia are a top team. They've got good players and we need to be wary of that. It's going to be a difficult game but hopefully luck is on our side.

They have taken confidence from the performances in both games. When you have that confidence and you're at home in a major tournament for the first time in a long time then there is the opportunity for these lads to make history.

  5. Croatia coach calls for patiencepublished at 19:16 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

    Croatia v Scotland (20:00)

Croatia are in the same boat as Scotland, needing three points to go through.

Apparently head coach Zlatko Dalic has a load of superstitions, including not eating anything on a game day until the match is over, so you might see him outside a Glasgow chippy after the game.

"This is our last chance, which we’re going to do our best to take," he said yesterday. "We’re at a real disadvantage without our fans because with them we’re way stronger, way better and I’d say this is not really fair.

"Nonetheless we’re going to try to achieve some sort of success. We are a really motivated team but we see the Scottish team as very good as well.

"The most important thing is that we win and patience will be key."

  7. Croatia: a team in transitionpublished at 19:10 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

    Croatia v Scotland (20:00)

Luka Modric was the star man on Croatia's journey to the World Cup final in 2018, winning the tournament's Golden Ball award.

He is three years older now and the team has changed quite a bit since then.

Four players who started in the 4-2 loss to France in Moscow have since retired from international duty - Danijel Subasic, Ivan Strinic, Mario Mandzukic and Ivan Rakitic.

Defensive stalwart Vedran Corluka also hung up his international boots after Russia 2018.

They are ranked the 14th best nation in the world right now and qualified comfortably for the Euros, topping their group and losing just once.

However, two Nations League campaigns brought two wins in 10 and the ignominy of a 6-0 thrashing by Spain. Including their two Group D outings so far, they are four games without victory and their only two wins in 11 have come against Cyprus and Malta.

  10. Canny Clarke makes Croatia favouritespublished at 19:03 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

    Croatia v Scotland (20:00)

"Obviously Croatia are the favourites, finalists at the last World Cup," added Steve Clarke during his media conference.

"We will have a little bit of an advantage in that we will have a home crowd. But the Croatian players will be able to deal with that atmosphere.

"We go out there determined to give or best performance. If we can reach our levels then hopefully that's enough to get us through to the knockout stages of a major competition for the first time in Scotland's history, and that would be a major achievement."

  11. 'We need your backing from the first minute to the 95th minute'published at 18:59 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

    Croatia v Scotland (20:00)

Hampden is reduced to 25% capacity at the moment and Scotland boss Steve Clarke is calling on the 12,000 or so lucky enough - or wealthy enough - to have tickets to turn up the volume.

"If they can make half the noise that the 3,000 supporters did at Wembley then it will be a great atmosphere," he said yesterday.

"What I would say to the Tartan Army is we need your backing from the first minute to the 95th minute. We need you all the way.

"Sometimes in a game things go against you, that's when you need the crowd more than anything.

"And hopefully everybody leaves the stadium with a big smile on their face."

    Quote Message

I like the shape of that Croatia team for us - it suits us. I think Robertson could have an absolute field day down the left-hand side, and if Croatia shift across and flatten that midfield, then I think we could dominate by going beyond them with McGinn and Armstrong.

  15. England & Czechs battle for top spotpublished at 18:47 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

    Croatia v Scotland (20:00)

There is another Group D match going on this evening, with England hosting the Czech Republic at Wembley.

Both teams are guaranteed to progress and the outcome has little bearing on Scotland's mission.

The Czechs top the group on goal difference, so they will hold on to that position if they avoid defeat.

If nations finish level on points, head-to-head will be the first factor to decide which finishes higher, so Scotland cannot leapfrog the Czechs.

The only way Scotland can finish second is if they win and England lose - and Steve Clarke's team make up a goal difference of three.

  17. Knocking on the door...published at 18:41 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

    Croatia v Scotland (20:00)

It’s not as if Scotland haven’t posed any threat in attack. They actually lead the way for efforts on goal in the group.

Against the Czech Republic, Scotland had a remarkable 19 shots, with four of those on target, and we had six corners.

At Wembley, there were 11 shots, with two on target, and five corners.

    Surely something has to give.

    Croatia v Scotland (20:00)

It pains me to point out that Scotland are the only team in the tournament without a goal and obviously that needs to change...

What do you fancy? A 25-yard screamer from Callum McGregor? A bullet header from Grant Hanley? A last-minute penalty from Scott McTominay? In off the back of the keeper's head?

We’re not fussy, we’ll take anything!

    Scotland are in the house!

Steve Clarke's squad have just received a roar from the thousand or so inside Hampden as they emerge into the Glasgow sun illuminating the Hampden pitch.

A brief wave from Andy Robertson and a clap from Kieran Tierney is enough to keep the fans on their feet. The team are decked out in white t-shirts, blue blazers and bright white trainers. Lyndon Dykes is obviously feeling the heat, either that or he left his jacket on the bus.

Meanwhile, our monitors show the Croatia team bus is somewhere on the Kingston Bridge.
