    Germany v Hungary (20:00 BST)

A bit of history could get made tonight.

Germany could be eliminated at the group stages of consecutive major tournaments for the first time.

As for Hungary? Well, they can win their final group game of a major tournament for the first time since a 3-1 victory over Bulgaria in the 1966 World Cup.

    Good World Cup, that one.

    This is a remarkable stat...

Germany have now scored a combined 302 goals across all World Cups and Euros - the most of any nation.

France are second with 184. Just the 118 fewer.

Speaking of goals, Kai Havertz became Germany's youngest ever European Championship finals goalscorer against Portugal, aged 22 years and eight days.

    Germany v Hungary (20:00 BST)

Tonight represents the first meeting between Germany and Hungary at a European Championship finals.

However, they did meet twice at the 1954 World Cup in their only previous fixtures at a major tournament. Hungary won 8-3 in the group stages, with West Germany triumphing 3-2 in the final. The first game remains Germany's heaviest at a Euros or World Cup.

As for recent meetings... the Germans have won the last two under Joachim Low - a 3-0 victory in May 2010 and 2-0 in June 2016.

    Portugal v France (20:00 BST)

Cristiano Ronaldo needs just one goal to become the outright European top goalscorer at major tournaments. He is currently tied on 19 goals with former Germany striker Miroslav Klose.

Those 19 goals have come in 14 different matches.

Germany got their tournament up and running in style with that thrilling win against Portugal, and they have home advantage again here.

Hungary held on for a great point against France and frustrated Portugal for long periods but they need to win this game to get out of this group. I just don't see that happening.

    Lawro's prediction: 2-0

  7. The view from both countriespublished at 19:43 British Summer Time 23 June 2021

    Portugal v France (20:00 BST)

    BBC Monitoring
    The world through its media

Ouest-France, external says that Les Bleus were “disappointing” against Hungary and that they must get a good result from the match against Portugal: “Didier Deschamps needs to find some breathing space, even in the 35C Budapest heat, and the team have promised that they would play to win.”

L’Equipe’s front page reads “First come first served: they might already have qualified, but Les Bleus would do well to win tonight in order to avoid a difficult road to the quarter-finals."

French outlet SoFoot, external wonders the extent to which the 2016 final could weigh on players”. It also smugly notes that Cristiano Ronaldo has never managed to score against France in six matches.

The myth of France-Portugal persists in the Portuguese press too, with daily Jornal de Noticias, external retracing the history of previous clashes with various anecdotes – for instance that Cristiano Ronaldo has played against both father and son (Lilian Thuram in 2006 and Marcus Thuram in 2020).

Portuguese outlet Sapo , externalmakes some interesting financial observations. “Scoring against France will be decisive in championship terms, but also financially. So far, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has earned 10.75m euros. Uefa pays each team 9.25m euros for taking part in the championship… Prizes are 1.5m euros per win and 750,000 euros per draw. The bonus for teams that qualify for the round of 16 is 2m euros. If Portugal beat France, it will receive a total of 3.5: that’s what Wednesday’s match in Budapest is worth.”

Impressively, in a group many people did not give them a chance of competing in, Hungary have taken it to the final game. They could even yet pull off a major shock by actually reaching the last 16 and sending one of their more prominent Group F rivals home.

They have one point at the moment, earned from a 1-1 draw with France in game two.

If they can snatch a victory against Germany tonight, they'll advance and one of Germany or Portugal will be out of here.

Joachim Low and Jurgen KlinsmannImage source, Getty Images

Jurgen Klinsmann has also written a column on the subject of Joachim Low for the BBC Sport website. Here is a little sample...

"I still text Joachim Low to wish him luck before every big game, so I'll be sending him a message before we play Hungary. I'm desperately hoping this isn't his last game as Germany manager.

"I got to know Joachim when we did our coaching badges together in 2000 and he has been one of my closest friends since we started our journey together with Germany in 2004, when I asked him to be my assistant.

"He has been the manager himself since 2006, which is just incredible. This is his seventh major finals in charge, and that is a such a long time to have any job in football."

Both teams will want to bounce back from disappointing results. You just have to look at the team sheets, some of the players on there are world-class players. We should get some goals and we should be in for an entertaining evening.

    Luis Boa Morte
Former Portugal forward talking to BBC World Service

Portugal have a good balanced squad and could achieve good things. Iit won’t be easy to repeat 2016 because everyone wants to beat Portugal, like everyone wants to beat France.

We expected France to come with everything because the manager is still the same, a few players from both sides played in that final. Ronaldo still has something to say because he didn’t finish the final. I'd say it will be a great match to watch. I don’t believe they’ll be playing for a draw.

I'm going with France to get the win that will see them top Group F, because I think they are the best team in the tournament but this defeat could mean the holders Portugal go out.

If their record is not enough [as a best third-placed side] and they are losing this game, they will throw everything at it.

    Lawro's prediction: 0-1
