    Frank Lampard
Former England midfielder on BBC One

Harry Maguire could have had doubters coming back from injury. He's a big lad, when you're big it takes time. There's a certain authority about him in this team and as soon as he's stepped backed it's looked different.

  2. 'You're in the lion's den'published at 22:47 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    BBC Sport reporter

England's Mason Mount says the atmosphere at Wembley is going to be like the lion's den.

"Now it’s a semi-final at Wembley and hopefully we can get to the final," he said. "It’s always been our goal from the start, it’s always been our focus.

"It’s going to be a special day with a few more fans there to create that atmosphere.

"You’re in the lions den and you have to come and really perform."

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

It helps having people believe in you. Luke Shaw certainly has that now with both club and country.

    FT: Ukraine 0-4 England

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

The doubters of Harry Kane have been silenced. You shouldn't doubt him. When he gets a chance, he's certain to score.

  5. 'There is more in the tank'published at 22:41 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    FT: Ukraine 0-4 England

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

The scary thing for other teams is that they will be watching this performance and see there is more in the tank. It is like they are purring and waiting to put their foot to the floor.

When I look at it from a defender's perspective for an opposing team it will be difficult whoever they put out as a front three. But the most frightening thing is at 75 minutes, who is coming off the bench? Marcus Rashford? Jude Bellingham? Jack Grealish? You don't want to see that. The depth is crazy.

This feels different [to past tournaments]. There is something here.

More from Gareth Southgate to BBC One: "It's fabulous. I suppose it's still sinking in that it's another semi-final - three in three years.

"We want to go two steps further. I know what will be happening at home. It's lovely to see everyone on a Saturday night, beer in hand. They should enjoy it. It's been a long year for everyone. I'm chuffed the two performances have brought so much happiness to people.

"We've known we had players we needed to look after physically. We've been able to introduce them. We know across seven games the squad is so important, trying to give people a breather at the right time. We learned a lot from Russia in that instance. We were trying to balance players with knocks and yellow cards. 'Do we take the centre-back off? Because we've the game sown up he won't need to make a tackle.'

"It's fabulous for our country - a semi-final at Wembley. Everyone can really look forward to that - it's brilliant."

  9. 'We need to grab the opportunity'published at 22:34 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    FT: Ukraine 0-4 England

    Alex Howell
    BBC Sport reporter

I asked Harry Kane about coming back to Wembley to take on Denmark in the semi-final. It's fair to say he's looking forward to it:

"Its going to be incredible. What a moment for us as a team and a nation," he said.

"A lot of us playing now won't have the opportunity to have a big game like that at Wembley in a major tournament again. It’s there for us. It's an opportunity for us and we have to grab it with both hands.

"We have to enjoy being in that environment. Coming off the back of the Germany game, the spirits were high and the stadium was rocking so hopefully we can use that energy again and really take the game to Denmark."

Very positive. I feel as if they are growing and getting better with every game. Something special is happening and roll on Wednesday.

  11. 'Spirit is phenomenal'published at 22:30 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    FT: Ukraine 0-4 England

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate to BBC One: "The players have been fantastic. To play as well as they did in a game with so much resting on it was impressive.

"It's a strange feeling. I'm thinking of the lads we didn't get on the pitch - Conor Coady, Ben Chilwell, Sam Johnstone, Aaron Ramsdale, they're the ones making this team successful. The spirit in the group is phenomenal.

"Whoever comes in does the job, wheoever isn't in - it is really difficult to leave three out of the matchday squad - the squad mentality is fantastic. That's uppermost in my mind, looking after those guys.

"I'm spending more energy worrying about the three I have to leave out because they're all good players. None of them deserve to be left out. They're all giving everything in training. None of it is because I don't think they're up to the level but we have to make the decisions. We have to make the right call for the right game with the right system. All of the players have been brilliant, tonight all the way through the group they've been fantastic."

    "England complete the Italian job!"

And that's Gary Lineker signing off for the night on BBC One. Beautiful.

Oh and a montage to Nessun dorma. Poetic.

  13. 'Kane on top of the world again'published at 22:28 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    FT: Ukraine 0-4 England

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

The nation, our country is looking at Harry Kane because he is such a special player and when it doesn't happen it will not be nice but he will be on top of the world again.

  15. Postpublished at 22:26 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    Here's Gareth...

He says it's been hard dropping three players from the squad for every game.

"I'm spending so much energy worrying about the three I have to leave out."

He's asked by Alan Shearer if he's able to enjoy it as much as us back home.

    "Not really, Alan!"

  16. 'I've always been ready'published at 22:25 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    FT: Ukraine 0-4 England

    England

England winger Jadon Sancho to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I'm feeling over the moon. Today was must-win and I'm just happy to have got an opportunity to play. This is a special moment for me.

"Every time I haven't been playing I've been going back to training and been giving it everything.

"I've just been focusing on myself while I've been at England. I've always been ready if I needed to come on.

"We knew today was going to be a big game, Ukraine are a very good side. I'm delighted.

"To be fair, I don't want to talk about Manchester United. Right now I just want to focus on England."

  17. 'England have a culture of winning'published at 22:24 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    FT: Ukraine 0-4 England

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

It is a culture he [Gareth Southgate] has created there. They are 4-0 up and not going to take the foot off. There is a culture of being very serious and about winning.

  18. 'Game of our lives on Wednesday'published at 22:22 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    FT: Ukraine 0-4 England

    England

England midfielder Jordan Henderson speaking to BBC: "It was a very good night. It was a great start with the early goal then we grew from there, defended well and created great chances. But we can't dwell too long. We've got a big game on Wednesday and we need to give absolutely everything.

"It's about time [for me to score] to be honest! It's been a long time coming. Thankfully I managed to get on the scoresheet. I'm just delighted for the lads because the performance was fantastic.

"I always try to contribute how I can and concentrate on my job on the pitch. That's all I can concentrate on, but of course, I would have liked to have scored more goals. But I can't complain, I'm here, I've contributed and got on the scoresheet which is nice.

"There are players that aren't playing as much as they have liked but the lads who haven't played as much have been outstanding. They have trained hard during the week, done extra work and been supporting lads in the changing rooms. It's the best squad I've seen in terms of that in a tournament. It's the biggest game of our lives on Wednesday to get into the final.

"We have always felt we are continuing to grow as a team and we feel we are ready to take the next step. Denmark are a tough side so we need to be at our very best if we want to go to the final but hopefully we can do that."
