  1. 'Southgate fills us with calmness'published at 18:14 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

There's a real sense of calmness about the England camp and Gareth Southgate's leadership and management so far in the tournament. I don't think we've played the most exciting football but the 40,000 England fans in Wembley the other night would probably think the last 15 minutes was the most exciting of their England-supporting lives! I don't think there's anything to worry about. It would be foolish to underestimate Ukraine but Southgate has filled the squad and the nation with calmness. It's about being professional and doing the job.

Very cute! And that leads us on very nicely...

It's been a weird year. We've all picked up new ways to watch and enjoy the football.

We've got our own little routines now. So are you keen to keep a winning formula going to ensure England win again?

What did you do before the Germany game that you're now convinced did the job?

Is there a person you've watched all the games with? A pair of lucky pants? A song you've listened to every time?

  5. What's at stake?published at 18:08 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    Ukraine v England (20:00 BST)

A place in the semi-finals, obviously, in front of 60,000 at Wembley.

But for Ukraine, it is unknown territory. This is their first ever Euro quarter-final.

Meanwhile, England are aiming to reach a first semi-final since 1996. We all know how the story ended there...

Ukraine's only previous major quarter-final was a 3-0 defeat to eventual winners Italy at the 2006 World Cup.

The winners play the Czech Republic or Denmark - who are currently playing now - in the semi-finals at Wembley on 7 July.

    Ukraine v England (20:00 BST)

The talk of the press in Ukraine isn't particularly kind to England, though they point out Gareth Southgate's side are favourites.

Ukrainian website Sport.ua says they will be more “psychologically relaxed” than against Sweden and the team may benefit from being underestimated by their opponents.

“It will be good to punish the smug Brits” it says.

It goes on to add that the match is “unlikely to be enchanting due to the peculiarity of the current England squad, which puts its stake on pragmatism and defence…the game is likely to turn into football chess”.

    England,

My first memories of you were in ’98 when Michael Owen stunned Argentina. I wore your shirt with pride in 2000 when Alan Shearer helped us beat the Germans. In ’02 I goggled over the great Brazilians but David Seaman’s mistake left me in tears.

Two years later, David Beckham blamed the turf for his penalty miss but I knew we had been beaten. In 2006, it was Cristiano Ronaldo’s wink which haunted me.

’08 never came… On to 2010, where Frank Lampard was denied a goal, 2012, more penalties, 2014, we didn’t make it out of the group and 2016… Iceland.

But in 2018 we reached the final four. Gareth Southgate and his waistcoat excited a nation and for 63 minutes, we were on top of the world.

Now it’s Ukraine. We’ve beaten Germany, we’re into the quarters and the giants are dropping like dominoes.

    Can we do it?
