  1. KICK-OFFpublished at 46 mins

    Ukraine 0-1 England

Here we go. A big 45 minutes coming up. Can England hold on to their lead?

  2. 'They are going to do us proud'published at 21:04 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    HT: Ukraine 0-1 England

England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, who missed out on a Euro 2020 spot because of injury, tells BBC One: "The lads have executed the game plan so far.

"It's disappointing for me personally not to be there but it still puts a smile on my face seeing them do so well. I know they are going to do us proud."

  3. 'Sancho is unplayable'published at 21:03 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    HT: Ukraine 0-1 England

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

Jadon Sancho is not a surprise. It is what we have been seeing for three years in German football. He dances past these players like he is on a dancefloor. They don't know where they are. He mesmerises defenders and has a balance and confidence that is rarely seen. Once he gets up to speed he is unplayable. At the end of it usually is a weight of pass that goes beyond his years.

  4. 'Sterling the key'published at 21:02 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    HT: Ukraine 0-1 England

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

Once you get one, they come in droves. The important role in that goal is Sterling, his part in committing people and bringing them to him to allow space to develop for other people.

  5. 'Ukraine are still in this'published at 21:01 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    HT: Ukraine 0-1 England

    Karen Carney
Former England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

England look more vulnerable in possession at times. We need to keep the concentration.

At 1-0, Ukraine are still in this game.

Happy with that. Can definitely see another England goal to close this out.

  7. 'England let Ukraine back into it'published at 20:59 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    HT: Ukraine 0-1 England

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Raheem Sterling has been the most positive player for England. When he opens his legs they can't keep running with him.

But England have let Ukraine back into the game.

  8. 'The danger for us is we get a bit sloppy'published at 20:58 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    HT: Ukraine 0-1 England

    Frank Lampard
Former England midfielder on BBC One

It's a great pass by Raheem Sterling for the goal. Harry Kane knows what he has to do. It's a toe in the end and a great goal.

The danger for us is we get so comfortable in possession and slow down or get a bit sloppy. That one moment at this level of football, they can hurt you with just one chance.

We can't allow spaces. We have to make sure we switch on and I'm sure Gareth will be saying that at half-time.

One of Ukraine's chances, which came as a result of Kyle Walker's sloppy back pass.

    Jordan Pickford was sharp again.

  10. 'We dropped off...why?'published at 20:58 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    HT: Ukraine 0-1 England

    Karen Carney
Former England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Ukraine have changed shape after going a goal behind. They're playing a 4-3-3. We've dropped off and you ask why? We were dominating.

Scott Bayley: I’m sure I watch different games to pundits. All saying ‘great so far’… we’re seriously dull. ‘Control’, yes if that means sideways & passing back amongst defence!! Bit braver & we cruise through

Benny Boy: Completely dominating the match .. wont feel safe till we get a second.. come on England !!

  12. 'It's finely balanced'published at 20:56 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    HT: Ukraine 0-1 England

    Micah Richards
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's finely balanced. We've underestimated Ukraine. They're better on the ball than people give them credit for. They've dropped very deep, but when they're on the ball they create chances.

Going into the second half, the England players will be thinking they need that second goal.

  13. 'Traps are being set'published at 20:55 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    HT: Ukraine 0-1 England

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

The key word is control. We have controlled them with and without the ball. We spoke before a bout how they are a team that like to take chances deep in their own third and we have been there, ready and waiting. You can see traps have been set and when we win it the likes of Sterling and Sancho have been committing people and going one versus one.

As well as assisting the goal, no player completed more dribbles (3), won more fouls (3) or had more touches in the opposition's box (5) than Raheem Sterling in the first half.

  15. 'Dangerous scoreline'published at 20:54 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    HT: Ukraine 0-1 England

    Frank Lampard
Former England midfielder on BBC One

It's half a job very well done. That first goal helped relax the team but at 1-0 it's a dangerous scoreline.

  16. 'Positive from England'published at 20:53 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

    HT: Ukraine 0-1 England

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

Very promising. England started the game as we hoped, Harry Kane getting his goal, Jadon Sancho and Raheem Sterling running riot and being really confident.

When Ukraine switched their system to four at the back they came into it. A word of caution, they are dangerous on the break but on the whole very positive for England.

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's been a moment of class from Raheem Sterling. That's the difference. But Ukraine have come back, they look capable of scoring. It's going to be such an interesting second half.

This is as close as England came to adding a second, with Declan Rice's stinging drive.
