  1. 'I might have given them a bigger ban and fine'published at 16:55 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2020

    Manchester City's ban from Europe

    BBC Breakfast

Football finance expert Dr Rob Wilson talking to BBC Breakfast: "It’s huge. It’s absolutely huge. I think seismic is probably the best word to use for it. While Manchester City might have expected what was coming, I don't think they really anticipated a two-year ban.

"Put the fine to the side for a minute because that’s a bit of change for them really, but if you look at how it’s going to have implications on other sides around Europe, their player recruitment strategy, not to mention whether their manager is going to stay on, do they want to have a team that doesn’t play Champions League football. It’s going to make it very difficult and murky waters for them to wade through.

"I think the issue for me, it is more moral and ethical. We can argue about whether regulations are legal or not but Manchester City signed up for those regulations, they agreed to play to those set of rules. What they’ve done over the last few years, it seems, is have a bigger goal to score into. I think the penalties are absolutely justified, I might have gone further actually and given them a bigger ban and a bigger fine because when you look at others teams there is a status quo now and you can’t break into that."

  3. 'We need more Olympic info'published at 16:49 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2020

    Norwich v Liverpool (17:30 GMT)

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says the club need more information before they decide whether forward Mohamed Salah can represent Egypt at the Olympics.

The tournament is for under-23 teams but three over-age players are allowed.

Salah, 27, is on Egypt's provisional 50-man list for the event, which has its final on 8 August - the first day of the 2020-21 Premier League season.

"Do I want to lose a player in pre-season? Of course not. That's clear," said Klopp. "But we have to consider different things. I will speak with Mo and all that stuff."

Egypt manager Shawky Gharib had previously said the decision was Liverpool's.

Klopp added nobody has contacted the club regarding Salah's involvement and discussion is "just in the media".

Manchester City have 10 days to lodge their appeal against being thrown out of the Champions League to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

City said in the statement they released on Friday that was their intention.

This has been reiterated since by club sources, who have indicated there is no likelihood of City accepting a partial punishment for Financial Fair Play breaches in order to resolve the situation quickly.

In addition to lodging their appeal, City will also need to ask for the UEFA ban and £25m fine to be set aside until the appeal is heard, otherwise the punishment will still apply.

The Premier League are still to comment on Friday’s decision but their Financial Fair Play Rules are known to be broadly similar to UEFA’s and City’s situation has been the subject of discussion among member clubs recently.

Should they decide to bring a charge they can ask UEFA for permission to look at the same evidence they have used to reach their own verdict.

  5. More records to chase...published at 16:43 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2020

    Norwich v Liverpool (17:30 GMT)

Victory in this match would mean Liverpool have the best record after 26 matches in the history of the top five European leagues.

They have already gone 42 top-flight matches unbeaten, putting them level with Nottingham Forest on the all-time list (1977-78) and just seven matches behind Arsenal's invincible record of 49 games (2003-04).

Liverpool have earned 100 points from the last 102 available to them in the Premier League, winning 33 of their last 34 matches.

Their 73 points from 25 matches this season is a top-flight record.

  6. Tettey extends Norwich contractpublished at 16:40 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2020

    Norwich v Liverpool (17:30 GMT)

Good news for Norwich fans this week as midfielder Alexander Tettey, who is the club's longest-serving player, has signed a one-year contract extension.

He has made 19 Premier League appearances this season.

"It's massive for me. It feels so good to be in Norwich and my family are happy," said Tettey. "When my family is happy, I'm happy."

Norwich boss Daniel Farke added: "We're totally delighted and happy that Alex has committed himself to be a part of our group. It's a great decision for both parties.

"Alex is a fully accepted leader in our group and a role model for our younger players, and the quality of his performances have been really important."

  7. 'Not sure the appeal will make a difference'published at 16:37 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2020

    Manchester City's ban from Europe

    BBC Radio Manchester

Kevin Parker, chairman of Manchester City supporters association, talking to BBC Radio Manchester: "I’m not massively surprised to be honest with you. It has been going on for some considerable amount of time. I think if you read the statements the clubs have released in the last 12 months, they have been expecting Uefa would probably ban them from European competitions.

"I think two years is a bit of surprise. I always get a bit confused that when you’re accused of financial fair play you get fined too, where do they think you’re going to get the money from? City will challenge it, I’m not sure whether it will make a great deal of difference."

    Manchester City's ban from Europe

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport on Football Focus

I can see why you think that Manchester City should accept a Premier League points deduction this season, but that would be an admission of guilt. They fundamentally do not accept that they've done anything wrong. I was told last night by someone at the club that 'this is not over'.

They will fight this will every fibre of their being. They are going to push and push to get this case over turned.

As a player you'll want answers but there aren't any yet because of the appeal. There isn't much loyalty in football anymore, apart from maybe to your manager so I think the players will be wanting to know what Pep Guardiola is going to do.

  16. Ever travelled from Japan to watch Stockport?published at 16:17 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2020

    No. Didn't think so.

This is a belter of a story. Read the intro below...

How did a chance find on a video game lead to a lad from Japan travelling almost 6,000 miles to watch Stockport County?

Akito Aoki was the National League club's special guest for his "beloved" County's home game against Bromley on Saturday, and they certainly rolled out the red carpet.

Aoki was treated to a three-course meal before kick-off and presented the match ball to the referee, as well as being lined up to conduct the half-time draw.

Now read the full thing. It's wonderful.

  17. Struggles down the bottompublished at 16:14 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2020

    Norwich v Liverpool (17:30 GMT)

There was plenty of optimism when Norwich City kicked off their Premier League campaign in a 4-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

It wasn't a bad performance on the whole against the European champions, with the scoreline flattering Liverpool somewhat.

Victory against Newcastle followed, before a narrow 3-2 defeat to Chelsea but since then it's been a struggle.

They now sit seven points off safety with a considerably worse goal difference. A win here today - inflicting Liverpool's first defeat of the season in the process - would be HUGE for Norwich.

  18. 'Other clubs appear to have a vendetta against Man City'published at 16:11 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2020

    Manchester City's ban from Europe

    BBC Radio Manchester

Professor of football finance, Kieran Maguire talking to BBC Radio Manchester about Manchester City's two-year Champions League ban: "The two-year element of it was a surprise. I’m just wondering whether if it’s a bit of positioning by Uefa who expect to get knocked back by CAS so they’ve thought if they put in a very severe punishment and then its reduced to one year, which is what some people had been expecting, then they’ll be reasonably happy.

"There are certainly some people from other football clubs that appear to have a vendetta against Manchester City and those people do have placings at Uefa as well.

"It does appear to have an element of double jeopardy and the club are being prosecuted twice for the same issue."

  20. Vydra nets winner for Burnleypublished at 16:07 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2020

    Southampton 1-2 Burnley

In the early kick-off, Matej Vydra's superb goal boosted Burnley's hopes of playing in Europe for the second time in three years as they won a weather-affected game at Southampton.

The result lifts the Clarets up to 10th, five points behind Sheffield United in fifth.

Burnley had made the perfect start, Ashley Westwood scoring direct from a corner after 93 seconds.

Danny Ings, who was deceived by the flight of the ball for Westwood's goal, made amends by equalising with a rasping drive into the bottom right corner from 18 yards but Vydra's goal proved the difference.
