This is exactly what we want to see in this World Cup when things happen out of nothing. Mbappe's run showed unbelievable speed, agility and power. And then Di Maria, who was having a quiet game, scores a goal with one chance.

France will be really disappointed they have given the lead away because they were the better team. Pogba was brilliant by stopping Messi getting the ball and driving his side forward. But what a goal by Di Maria to pull his side level.

France should have been out of sight but it is all square at the break.

All to play for and sets things up for an interesting second half.

The atmosphere has really ramped up now that Argentina are level. They were not in this for 40 minutes but a moment of magic has them back in.

Kante's honesty has probably prevented Mascherano from getting a red card, because he got straight back to his feet.

Oh, that's nasty. Javier Mascherano is late on N'Golo Kante and catches the France midfielder with his boot. Yellow card, probably lucky to get away with just a booking too.

You won't see many better strikes than that. Probably the best goal of the tournament so far. So much for his opposite number having the better of him.

Antoine Griezmann and Benjamin Pavard play a one-two down the right before Pavard crosses but the ball is out of Olivier Giroud's reach.

Five minutes to go until half time with France firmly in control.

That's more like it!

Angel di Maria and Lionel Messi combine as the latter breaks into the box, he tumbles under a challenge and there's some half-hearted shouts for a penalty. The referee is right over it and waves play on.

Some much needed show of teeth in the final third by Argentina though.

Bit of a break in play with Olivier Giroud and Nicolas Otamendi down on the ground after the two clashed when going for the ball. Giroud is deemed at fault, though, as Argentina are given a free kick.

I cannot see Argentina scoring if they played this game for a week. There's just no rhythm or creativity in the final third. The France defence will not have a more comfortable game all tournament.

Lionel Messi has played in this position for Barcelona. But he has had Sergio Busquets, Xavi and Andres Iniesta behind him to feed him the ball. We are talking about a completely different team and he needs to be deeper.

Paul Pogba is pulling the strings in midfield and another great ball finds Kylian Mbappe. He tries to catch out Nicolas Tagliafico with some tricky footwork but the Argentina defender keeps his eye on the ball and gets the tackle in.

Dangerous ball in by Benjamin Pavard but Olivier Giroud isn't expecting it at all and doesn't set himself up right before Argentina clear.

Antoine Griezmann chases a ball down the right and then cuts into the box before trying to pick out a team-mate at the far post but Franco Armani intercepts.

France, though, looking the most likely to score again.
