Tonight, Des? I still occasionally have a little emotional moment about that night, 30 years on.

This was the first international tournament I was old enough to appreciate and remember. It forged me as an English football fan.

    Bobby Charlton
England World Cup winner in 1966

I'm really pleased, England have played well, have knocked the ball about and looked confident. We wanted to show the rest of the world we can play football and that was first class.

Olaf Thon and Klaus Augenthaler looked like they could cause problems through the middle of the pitch but defensively England have been solid. But there is a still a lot of work to do.

A goal of the tournament run down, that is won by Bobby Baggio's brilliant solo goal against Czechoslovakia, with 'Killer' by Adamski as the backing track. Oh, just hook that up to my veins.

Tim: Can't believe Waddle cut the mullet before this, a bad luck omen if ever I've seen one. Don't cut your power mullet before the big game!

It's a lesson I intend to live by after watching Tiger King.

    Jimmy Hill
    BBC Sport pundit

The Germans are favourites and are feeling the tension. It's a pleasure to see an England team play like that - two wins in a row have given England the confidence to play. We look a classy, stylish, international side. Germany don't know how to deal with us.

  9. 'Walker outstanding'published at 16:13 British Summer Time 12 April 2020

    Terry Venables
    Tottenham manager on BBC One

Paul Gascoigne has been doing very well, but for me Des Walker has been the outstanding player so far. He looks unbeatable and Germany's strikers can't get by him. England have bossed this game and now we look favourites, I cannot wait for this second half.

  10. 'All the knockers proved wrong'published at 16:10 British Summer Time 12 April 2020

    West Germany 0-0 England

    Bryan Robson
Injured England captain on World Cup Grandstand

All the knockers and the doubters have been proven wrong, we have played really nice and tight in that first half. Against Cameroon we had a certain amount of luck but against Belgium I thought it was good defensive play.

Throughout the tournament England have played well and deserved the little bit of luck they have had. And in this match we have had no luck yet otherwise we would have scored a goal.

  12. HALF-TIMEpublished at 45 mins

    West Germany 0-0 England

An overridingly positive first-half from England, despite a little surge from West Germany towards the end. It is the kind of mature, measured, skilful display that we often laud other nations for producing.

That it remains 0-0 will be a concern, though, for Bobby Robson. England need to land a proper blow.

Time to head off and get yourself a half-time snack. Some Findus Crispy Pancakes and a Kwenchy Kup. Or maybe a Push Pop? You know, then you can save some for later...

First proper signs now that the tide is starting to turn.

Shilton is drawn into another save, this one a lot tougher to make, as Klaus Augenthaler's effort from long range following a free-kick forces the England keeper to push the ball over with both hands.

Matthew Okott: Bobby Robson was criticised for not adopting the "modern" sweeper system early enough but when England needed to rescue the game against Cameroon, they went back to the "outdated" 4-4-2 and it worked.

England will be playing four, four, f*$!ing two!

  16. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 39 mins

    West Germany 0-0 England

Voller hasn't been able to recover. His semi-final is over. Riedle does indeed replace him.

Riedle is of course a future Liverpool and Fulham player, although I think it would be fair to say those clubs did not see the best of him following his far more prolific spells in Germany and Italy.

    He is a fresh-faced 24-year-old here.

You have to feel for Voller too. He's not had a lot of luck in Italy. Frank Rijkaard gobbed on him when West Germany faced the Netherlands, in which he got sent off, causing him to miss the quarters. And now he's injured in the semis and may miss the final if his country get there.

    Peter ShiltonImage source, Getty Images

Peter Shilton is dawn into a save for pretty much the first time in the game. It is a pretty simple one too, certainly one that a man with 124 caps to his name should be making. Thon hits the effort, from 25 yards, before Shilton saves.

Here is a question... has a better England keeper come along since Shilton retired? The obvious candidate is David Seaman. But would you take David James over him? Or Joe Hart? Jordan Pickford?

The lads have been doing great, they have started really well and have done exactly what we said they should at the start, which is to get tight. The Germans are the ones who have been slack so far and we have to be delighted at the moment.

Voller is still down getting treatment. They obviously want to give him every chance to get back on the field, such is his importance. Saying that, in the opening 30 minutes here he hasn't really being given a kick by Walker. I wonder if Voller has heard the Forest song about Des?

Karl-Heinz Riedle is ready to go if Voller can't get over his injury.
