George: Watching the '90 semi for the first time, and why has the Waddle trip in the box not been more made of? Seen the Gazza miss from '96 loads of times. Never seen the trip. Clear pen!

Danger for England! It is two on two and Klinsmann has a sniff of a chance, but across comes the simply superb Des Walker to snuff it out. He's not alone, but the Forest defender does not deserve to be on a losing side here.

Strap yourself in. Here come another unbearable, exhilarating 30 minutes. And possibly more.

  4. 'England yet to experience a shootout'published at 17:09 British Summer Time 12 April 2020

    West Germany 1-1 England

    John Motson
BBC commentator at the Stadio delle Alpi

The England team have never been involved in a penalty shootout and I should imagine that if it did happen for the first time in a World Cup semi-final then I think none of us could stand the tension.

Can England go one step further and complete something of a dream - because nobody thought this team would get as close to the World Cup final as this.

We should have had a penalty for that trip on Waddle. Just one of the many items on the big list of England football grievances.

Soon to be joined by Ronald Koeman and Gazza stretching and just failing to connect with that low ball across goal at Wembley.

Please don't send anymore. We'll be here all night.

It just shows Gary Lineker's great ability inside the box, he knows where the target is.

    Peter Shilton
Former England goalkeeper, reflecting back on the 1990 World Cup

At full-time Bobby Robson told us it was there for us if we wanted it, and to go and make it happen. We were all feeling positive and the momentum in the game was with us.

Andy W: If there were any criticisms about England that night it was that Beardsley simply didn't play well and if Shilton had stayed on his line for their goal it would have been a comfortable take.

Looks like both sides have settled for an extra 30 minutes. There's not a huge amount of urgency from either.

This is unbearable, yet you can't take your eyes off it.

Ah England, never change. Oh, you haven't.

Looks like Bobby Robson has abandoned any plan he had to throw Steve Bull into the mix. Suddenly the need for a goal is not as pressing. And with extra-time looming he will want a few more options up his sleeve.

    Gary Lineker
Ex-England striker, reflecting back on the 1990 World Cup

We didn't give up. We kept going as we had done throughout the competition. It just fell nicely for me. It fell on my left foot - the old swinger - and it hit the back of the net. It was a great feeling.

Lineker truly is the man for the big occasion. When his country were ailing against Cameroon he stepped up and now he has given them parity in their biggest game in 24 years.

That is four goals for the tournament for the striker now and a 10th in the last two World Cups. Clinical.

  16. 'No more than we deserve'published at 16:55 British Summer Time 12 April 2020

    West Germany 1-1 England

    Trevor Brooking
Former England midfielder at Stadio delle Alpi

It's no more than we deserve! I imagine there will be some crockery needing to be replaced back home. The Germans got themselves in a mess and Lineker picked his spot with that left foot.

The Germans got themselves into a terrible tangle and how they were made to pay - Lineker picked his spot with a beautiful left-footer. Well we did say it wasn't over and what a great moment for England and their supporters everywhere.

ENG v W GER 1990 - Lineker levels for England

    Yeeeeeeeeeessssssss!!! England have done it!

Gary Lineker is the hero once again. He's not had many opportunities in the game but just like all great strikers, when one does come he is ready and able to convert.

Parker's lofted ball into the box is not dealt with by two German defenders and Lineker capitalises with a low shot across goal and into the far corner.

    Cue delirium.

Something in it still? You better believe it. Wright almost finds that something with a looping header that is gathered by Illgner.

There's some action on the England bench. Are we about to see Steve Bull?

  20. 'Still something in the game'published at 16:51 British Summer Time 12 April 2020

    West Germany 1-0 England

    Bryan Robson

We didn't have much luck on the free kick for Germany's goal but if the lads keep playing, and there is still plenty of time, we could get something from a free-kick or a corner. There is still something in this game for us.
