    West Germany 1-0 England

It has been a long old wait for England to get themselves this close to a World Cup final again. They are now 15 minutes away from that opportunity being whipped away from them. What have they still got in the tank after those punishing extra-times in the last 16 and quarters?

    John Motson
BBC commentator at the Stadio delle Alpi

With about 17 minutes left Germany are looking likely winners to make it through to the World Cup final but England have still got an awful lot of optimism and intent, there is no way the spirit of this side will be broken.

  3. 'The whole world is watching'published at 16:45 British Summer Time 12 April 2020

    West Germany 1-0 England

Trevor Steven, speaking to the Guardian in 2018: “It was huge, absolutely huge. We had lots of family over – everybody wanted to be there. The atmosphere was electric. They were favourites to beat us because of the record books, plus they had such a strong side.

“It’s an unbelievable experience to have the three lions on the shirt and represent your country – the whole country, the whole world, is watching. But you have to put all of those things to the back of your head, try and attain your personal levels.”

Pearce is not going down without a fight, that is for sure. He charges from his own half and slide tackles one, two, maybe three West German players.

Huge shout for a penalty to England. The referee turns it down. How?

Just moments after agonisingly failing to latch on to a Gascoigne chipped ball into the box, Waddle jinks into the box and draws the tackle from Augenthaler. There's no real appeal from England.

They've not had the rub of the green so far.

  7. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 67 mins

    West Germany 1-0 England

Second change for West Germany. Hassler is off, limping his way to the sideline, and no comes Stefan Reuter.

  8. YELLOW CARDpublished at 65 mins

    West Germany 1-0 England

First signs of frustration? Parker is the first man in the book for clattering into Buchwald.

No need to panic just yet, but the nerves will begin to show if England don't get back into this soon. There are 25 minutes and counting for them to do so.

  9. CLOSE!published at 63 mins

    West Germany 1-0 England

England so near to pulling level!

Gascoigne is inevitably involved, swinging in a free-kick that Pearce muscles his way in to get on the end of before flicking a header just inches wide.

  12. 'A keeper's worst scenario'published at 16:35 British Summer Time 12 April 2020

    West Germany 1-0 England

    Peter Shilton
Former England goalkeeper, reflecting back on the 1990 World Cup

I was happy with the wall and the way I had everything lined up but they then tapped it square which changed the angle. I changed my position to narrow the angle, I was three or four yards off my line which I was happy with. I was confident I had it covered. Paul Parker went out to close the ball down and it hits him and loops up quite viciously. I just couldn't get it, it clipped the bar and goes in.

As a keeper it's the worst scenario you can find yourself in, you're rendered helpless. You've just got to hope the ball goes over really, and I actually thought it was going to hit the crossbar. It was in the one place I couldn't get it and after playing pretty well throughout the game I thought that was going to decide the match.

It's so disappointing to concede a goal like that. People have been saying that we have had all of the luck during the tournament but that was so unlucky. This is a test of character now.

West Germany lead and they can thank a huge slice of luck for it.

Brehme does indeed hit the free-kick, following a short lay-off, but before it can even breach the markings of the box it cannons off the boot of the onrushing Paul Parker and loops up and over the scrambling Shilton and in.

Danger for England. West Germany have a free-kick in a decent spot.

Brehme can hit them, you know.

  16. 'German fans making noise'published at 16:31 British Summer Time 12 April 2020

    West Germany 0-0 England

    Trevor Brooking
Former England midfielder at Stadio delle Alpi

For the first time the German fans are beginning to make a bit of noise as their team enjoys a period of pressure, Lothar Matthaus has been creeping forward and the German defenders have been taking turns in coming forward on the attack to test the England defence because in that first half they always had numbers back.

"Under siege" is how John Motson describes the England goal right now. They could do with a chef who inexplicably used to be the world's greatest special op Navy SEAL.

Thon pulls an effort wide and then moments later Matthaus has a golden opportunity to fashion something in the box but slips at the vital moment.

Chance for West Germany. A good one too, and it all came from sloppy England player at the other end.

Pearce's poor control following a corner allows West Germany to break and after Klinsmann is tackled by Walker, the ball falls to Thon for a shot that forces Shilton into a save.

    And breathe.

When we watched this game back to get it ready to show to you, we found there were a number of occasions when racist chanting appeared to be directed towards Paul Parker. We have edited the sound so this unacceptable abuse is now not audible but did not want to hide that it happened so we wanted to let you know.

    But England hit back.

Waddle's great ball over the top releases Parker, but after getting into the box he can't find a cross towards Lineker.
