That's a wrap for today then.

A fine ending to the century-old Home Championship for Wales.

It would be 20 years until they would next face England, with Mark Hughes turning from debutant player to Wales manager as his side were beaten 2-0 at Old Trafford in 2004 thanks to goals from Frank Lampard and David Beckham.

Wales have lost all four of their matches against England since, but the 1980s remain a happy decade for them - with this win in 1984 and a thumping 4-1 triumph in 1980.

Wales' bid for World Cup qualification in 1986 again went down to the wire, but Wales were pipped by Scotland in the game remembered for the tragic death of Scotland boss Jock Stein.

As for England, they did qualify for Mexico 1986, but they were stopped by the genius of Diego Maradona, not to mention a little helping hand.

What a night for Wales as the local boy stole the show for a dream debut.

Ruabon-born Manchester United youngster Mark Hughes scored with a well placed header to give Wales an early lead which they never looked like relinquishing against a hapless England team.

It was a good night for the former Wrexham mates Joey Jones and Mickey Thomas, who rampaged down the left, Robbie James was huge in midfield and goalkeeper Neville Southall was almost a spectator.

A bumpy pitch made it a hard watch but it was an even harder result for England to take.

They brought an end to the Home Internationals to seek stronger opposition. The irony of that was clear for all to see at the Racecourse.

Wales manager Mike England told BBC Sport: “What I was pleased about is that everyone could see it was a new squad, an exciting squad. I think we’re going places and I’m really optimistic about Welsh football.

“The players in the dressing room know that if they give total commitment and play for one another like they did tonight that we can really go places and get the respect we need.

“We need nations to take notice of us now that England and Scotland have dropped us. We need people to say, ‘Hey, they’re not a bad side, please come and play us’.

“Because we need money in to keep us going.”

It's Welshmen who will look back on the end of this series, particularly their manager Mike England, with satisfaction.

All that one can say about England is that they will be happy to forget tonight.

They think it's all over at the Racecourse Ground and it is now,

Wales have beaten England 1-0.

Another chance for Wales who are finishing much the stronger side.

It's a first sight on goal for Ian Rush after Mark Hughes' lay-off, but Rush's firmly struck shot is straight at Peter Shilton.

David Phillips' cross ricochets off Gordon Davies and Mark Hughes is on hand to slam home from close range, but the linesman has flagged to say that Davies handled and the referee agrees.

There is an utter desperation to everything England do now.

Has Neville Southall really had to make a save today?

Wales have defended excellently, but England look bereft of inspiration.

Some fans are whistling already - they think it's all over...

Those Welsh supporters will be disappointed to discover there are still five minutes left.

Still, one can't fault their optimism.

Indeed a famous 2-1 win for Fourth Division Wrexham against then First Division champions Arsenal in the FA Cup!

A half chance as David Phillips snatches at a shot that goes harmlessly wide.

However, at this point you would have to say Wales look more likely to score a second than to concede. Other than a short spell after the interval, that has been the case almost throughout.

Again Wales should make it 2-0 and again Gordon Davies is the culprit.

Alan Kennedy overran the ball and Ian Rush intercepted and placed his pass back into the space vacated by Kennedy.

Davies raced clear but again failed to test Peter Shilton, striking firmly but wide of the target inside the penalty area.

His head is in his hands again.

Bobby Robson has already given 20 players their first cap since he became England manager, with Mark Wright number 20.

Well here comes number 21, Queens Park Rangers captain Terry Fenwick is on to replace the injured Alvin Martin.

England have switched to 4-3-3 and Paul Walsh runs directly at David Phillips, who times his tackle and concedes a corner.

However, Alvin Martin is still hobbling, so England are probably limited in terms of making further changes.

There doesn't seem to be an official man of the match award but, if we're talking unofficial accolades, surely Mickey Thomas has to be a leading candidate?

Wales' left winger has been everywhere, a bag of tricks in attack and a tenacious defender of seemingly endless energy, tracking back constantly.

On another day, Thomas might have had a few assists and Wales would have won more comfortably.

As it is, the Chelsea player has put in a huge shift to contribute to what could soon be a well-earned victory.

Again Wales almost make it safe.

Alvin Martin just falls asleep and Mark Hughes robs him, managing to lob a shot over Peter Shilton from a tight angle, but he can't find the target.

The 20-year-old Welshman has been superb.

Martin is struggling after getting tangled up with Hughes, it looks like he is going to need to go off.
