  1. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 77 mins

    Wales 1-0 England

Finally Bobby Robson looks to his substitutes and it's the £1m man, Luther Blissett, who comes on, replacing David Armstrong.

Blissett has not featured for England since his switch to the San Siro, but he is said to be looking for a return to English football this summer.

A return to Vicarage Road could well be on the cards, but in the meantime, he has just over 12 minutes to help England rescue something.

  2. 'Davies picked it totally wrong'published at 77 mins

    Wales 1-0 England

    Barry Davies
    BBC commentator

It was just a question of picking it right - and he [Gordon Davies] picked it totally wrong.

Did it bobble a little bit before he hit it? I don't know.

He certainly set himself, waited for Shilton to set himself, took his time and then got underneath it.

It did bobble slightly but, even so, he will be disappointed with that shot.

  3. CLOSE!published at 76 mins

    Wales 1-0 England

    That could have been it.

Peter Shilton's throw is misjudged by Liverpool's Sammy Lee and a former Liverpool man, Joey Jones, dispossesses him and intelligently picks his pass to free Gordon Davies, but the Fulham forward leans back and balloons the ball over the bar.

Head in hands stuff for a forward on his way to becoming Fulham's record scorer if he continues banging them in at Craven Cottage.

  4. Postpublished at 73 mins

    Wales 1-0 England

As David Armstrong produces another moment he'd happily forget, it is worth mentioning that Alan Kennedy is the third member of this England side who never played again internationally after this match.

Harsh on Kennedy, a player who won the lot with Liverpool and was a key teammate of Ian Rush in this 1983-84 season.

Kennedy, like another former Liverpool player, goalkeeper Ray Clemence, simply came around at the wrong time.

Clemence could never dislodge Peter Shilton and for Kennedy, Kenny Sansom was the issue, with the Arsenal man playing 86 times for his country.

Indeed, Bobby Robson trusted Sansom to such a degree he only took one recognised left-back to the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

  5. 'Some characters in this Welsh side'published at 71 mins

Wales full-back Joey Jones won two European Cups with Liverpool

Barry Davies is right when he says "there are some characters" in this Wales side.

Their left flank is a particularly colourful part of the team, with impish winger Mickey Thomas playing in front of his good friend and long-time team-mate Joey Jones.

This was a great homecoming for the two players who had come through the youth ranks at Wrexham together.

At this point in time, Thomas and Jones had been reunited at Chelsea by manager John Neal, their former Wrexham boss.

The pair would be reunited again at Wrexham towards the end of their careers, adding to their legendary status at the Racecourse.

  6. Postpublished at 70 mins

    Wales 1-0 England

Very little to report in either penalty area and Wales are definitely back to being in relative control of this one.

England are getting very frustrated, they don't look close to being able to break Wales down,

  7. Postpublished at 68 mins

    Wales 1-0 England

England are woefully short of creativity in the absence of injured Spurs midfielder Glenn Hoddle.

Hoddle has been in superb form this season and lit up the European stage to help Spurs to next week's UEFA Cup final against Anderlecht.

However, England must surely do something to turn the tide?

Luther Blissett and the uncapped Gary Lineker could both be introduced perhaps?

  8. 'Bobby Robson must feel like weeping'published at 66 mins

    Wales 1-0 England

    Barry Davies
    BBC commentator

There's been absolutely no guile from the England midfield at all.

One doesn't want to be specific but there are moments in this match which will have made Bobby Robson feel like weeping.

  9. Postpublished at 63 mins

    Wales 1-0 England

Lovely feet from Mickey Thomas who twists one way and then the other before dinking a cross to the back post that Peter Shilton is unable to hold.

Wales have a corner and a welcome bit of respite, they have not looked the same side so far after the interval.

    Wales 1-0 England

Should England be concerned that right back Mike Duxbury is also their most threatening player?

That's a quality run there, but his shot totally lacked composure, it was a true hit and hope job and it sails harmlessly over Neville Southall's goal.

England are on top but they still don't look like finding a leveller.

  12. Walsh looks lostpublished at 58 mins

    Wales 1-0 England

Paul Walsh just came really deep and still lost the ball, you can tell the youngster is just desperate to make an impact.

The Luton Town forward is said to be close to completing a move to join the league champions Liverpool, with a deal likely to be completed this month.

  13. 'Hughes lets Martin know he's there'published at 57 mins

First Division defences were already familiar with Mark Hughes' rugged approach

A sign of things to come from Mark Hughes there: bashing into England centre-back Alvin Martin after the ball had gone.

Hughes "letting Martin know he's there", as Barry Davies diplomatically puts it.

West Ham stalwart Martin doesn't seem to mind too much. He won't be the last defender to feel the force of Hughes' physicality.

  14. The story of the Saintspublished at 55 mins

    Wales 1-0 England

It's been a game to forget for David Armstrong, but it's probably worth remarking on the fact that Armstrong, Peter Shilton and Mark Wright combine to ensure over 25% of this England team play for Southampton.

That would come as a surprise in 2020, but in 1984 Southampton finished second in the First Division, running Liverpool all the way.

However, unlike Shilton and Wright, this story doesn't end so happily for Armstrong.

Just like fellow midfielder John Gregory, Armstrong would never play for England again after this night at the Racecourse.

    More corners.

For the very first time in the contest, England are asking the questions and exerting the pressure.

Big Nev comes for the second one and totally misses it and his side suddenly look vulnerable.

    Can Wales stand firm?

  17. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 52 mins

    Wales 1-0 England

A double chance for England as Wales narrowly escape with their lead intact.

West Ham defender Alvin Martin wins the ball in the air from a corner and his thumping effort cannoned back off Wales' crossbar, seemingly to present a tap-in to the on-rushing John Gregory, only for Mickey Thomas to miraculously clear just in time.

    England's best opportunity by far.

  18. Rush, Wales' workhorsepublished at 49 mins

    Wales 1-0 England

    Ian RushImage source, Getty Images

Reflecting on his Wales career in a recent BBC Radio Wales interview, Ian Rush said he was a different player in the red of his national side compared to the red of Liverpool.

Leading the attack for a dominant Liverpool side who won the European Cup in 1984, Rush scored a staggering 47 goals in all competitions during the 1983-84 season.

International football, however, was a different proposition.

Chances were fewer and Rush had to adapt his game and expend more energy chasing lost causes and pressing opposition defenders, as he does tirelessly for Wales against England here.

One of the game's great goal scorers but always willing to roll up his sleeves and toil for his country.

    Wales 1-0 England

In a game where truly quality moments stand out a mile, that was a lovely flick by Ian Rush.

He's only scored one in his last six for Wales and none in his last three, but his class still radiates through.
