  1. 'Nicely taken goal from a young man of some physique'published at 18 mins

    Wales 1-0 England

    Barry Davies
    BBC commentator

This young man has a fine goal-scoring record at club level in the few games he's played for Manchester United, and he marks his debut at full level for Wales with a finely directed header.

A really nicely taken goal but one about which England won't be happy because there was no challenge on the Manchester United player.

Ian Rush has been somewhat isolated for Wales but it seems he may well have found a goal-scoring partner, of some physique which is important.

GOAL - Wales 1-0 Englandpublished at 17 mins

    Mark Hughes

    Wales are ahead!

They have taken full advantage of that soft free-kick, Alan Davies' delivery is pinpoint accurate and it's Manchester United youngster Mark Hughes who finds space in the box to expertly head home across Peter Shilton.

What a debut moment for a man who looks to have a really bright future.

    Wales 0-0 England

The referee lets about four hefty challenges pass, but curiously blows for a free-kick for what looked a very minor shove by Mark Wright on Ian Rush.

Wales won't care, they have a free-kick in a decent position.

England send their big players up for a corner, but Wales deal with it well.

The hairstyles on show in this match are something to behold.

There are lots of mullets, a smattering of perms and a few combovers for those struggling to battle baldness.

Mickey Thomas might just top the lot.

These days, he's been bald for a few years but, on this occasion, the tricky little winger still had a remarkable mane.

Watch it flow as he runs down the left flank.

The Welsh desire is clear for all to see as Joey Jones makes a 50-yard dash and almost wins a corner chasing what seemed to be a lost cause.

A first half chance for England, but Mike Duxbury fires well over the bar after some patient build-up.

  10. CLOSE!published at 8 mins

    Wales 0-0 England

That's nearly the first goal and it is Wales who are close to edging in front.

England failed to deal with the corner and the ball fell kindly for Ian Rush who struck the ball firmly on the spin, but England's goalkeeper Peter Shilton anticipated it and was able to save, even holding onto the ball rather than pushing it behind for a corner.

A goalkeeper catching a ball in a crowded penalty area? Surely that will never go out of fashion.

Wales look strong down the left with old pals Joey Jones and Mickey Thomas turning up the pressure.

That's a nice run from Thomas who tries to cross and wins a corner. The appeal for handball definitely seemed to be more in hope than expectation.

  12. Footballers ageing badlypublished at 5 mins

Time has not been kind to a lot of these footballers.

    Wales 0-0 England

A first sniff there for Ian Rush, who as we won't tire of telling you, was at the peak of his powers in this campaign. He scored 32 league goals, 47 goals for Liverpool overall and won the First Division, the European Cup and the League Cup.

Mark Wright really is up against it today.

  15. Postpublished at 3 mins

    Wales 0-0 England

Wales might have found a new star in Mark Hughes, but it is presumably going to be a while until the United youngster wrestles the number 10 shirt away from Chelsea midfielder Mickey Thomas?

    Thomas looks lively.

  16. Postpublished at 2 mins

    Wales 0-0 England

That's a really nice early moment for Mark Hughes who completely got the better of debutant Mark Wright as he looked to wriggle free in the England penalty area.

Ultimately nothing came of the move as Robbie James blasted high and wide, but really encouraging signs for Wales there.

    Wales v England (13:15 BST)

That makeshift England team includes a lot of new names - and there could have been another one.

Gary Lineker would go on to become an England legend, winning the Golden Boot at the 1986 World Cup and ending his international career with 48 goals from 80 caps.

And had things turned out differently, the Match of the Day presenter might have made his debut against Wales.

“The first time I ever got called up for England I was at Leicester at the time and I got a phone call from Gordon Milne [Leicester manager] on the Monday afternoon saying there had been a couple of injuries and Bobby Robson had been on the phone," Lineker recalls.

“I grabbed a toothbrush, got my football boots from the club and headed up the motorway to Wrexham. I remember driving nervously up and started training.

“Cometh the match I was sitting on the bench and about an hour in he [Robson] has asked one or two of the lads, ‘You get warmed up, so and so get warmed up and Garth, you got and get warmed up as well.”

    “He must have meant me!”

Lineker would have to wait until later that month to make his senior England debut, in a 1-1 draw against Scotland at Hampden Park.

  20. The start of a stalwart career for Phillipspublished at 13:15 British Summer Time 2 May 2020

    Wales v England (13:15 BST)

Mark Hughes is not the only debutant in the Wales side for this game. Starting at right-back is Plymouth Argyle’s David Phillips, who was born in Germany where his Caerphilly-born father was stationed with the RAF.

Phillips, 20, was part of a Third Division Argyle side which had narrowly lost to Watford in the FA Cup semi-final a few weeks before this game.

Phillips would join Manchester City later in 1984 before spells at Coventry City - where he was an FA Cup winner in 1987 - Norwich City, Nottingham Forest, Huddersfield Town, Lincoln City and Stevenage Borough.

He scored two goals in 62 appearances for Wales with his final cap coming against Italy in 1996.
