What a half of football that was, topped by a goal for England.

The Dutch came on strong before the break, though. A long, long way to go in this one.

Anyone got the referee in their fantasy team? He almost provides the assist for a Dutch equaliser as Clarence Seedorf's attempted pass hits the man in the middle and rebounds back to the midfielder, who turns and rifles one just over the bar.

Corner number eight for the Netherlands in the final few seconds of the half and again England are unconvincing when dealing with it as a flick on causes a bit of panic before Gary Neville gets rid.

He is very much the ally for Gacoigne when Gascoigne goes on the runs. Ince is quite clever and looks after Gascoigne.

Paul Ince is penalised for body checking Jordi Cruyff and is shown a yellow card. The bigger picture of that is he will miss the quarter-finals should England get there. That is a big blow.

Oh! So, so close! A long throw is hooked across the face of goal by Paul Gascoigne but Darren Anderton just can't quite reach to stab in.

England's first yellow card of the game as Teddy Sheringham catches Winston Bogarde on the shin.

Really good spell from the Dutch at the moment, England need to keep them at bay until half time.

Deceptive pace from Dennis Bergkamp.

Ooof, now that's a warning that Netherlands are not out of this yet.

Gareth Southgate gets his header back to the keeper all wrong and Dennis Bergkamp is on it in a flash. He breaks towards goal but David Seaman pushes away the shot. Massive save!

Paul Carney: Southgate playing the ball out from the back very well. Adams absolutely hopeless at it.

Adam Lambert: You forget until you get a rerun like this how good the likes of Teddy Sheringham & Tony Adams were. Obviously any opportunity to watch Gazza ply again should be taken too

That was the first real good effort on goal by the Dutch. Quite a long time coming.

Darren Anderton's challenge is late on Jordi Cruyff and the Netherlands have another opportunity from a set piece. It is just outside the box but Clarence Seedorf's effort deflects off the wall and behind for a corner.

David Seaman does manage to punch this one away but only to Dennis Bergkamp, who volleys wide. Good effort.

Ronald de Boer gives the ball away and Alan Shearer is almost in on goal but he is penalised for pushing Winston Bogarde as the two challenged for the ball inside the Netherlands box.

Couple of warning shots from Dutch from set pieces as Aron Winter again is the first to meet a corner but again he heads over. England need to be more alert to the Netherlands' deliveries.

There is a nice spring in the step about England's pay, buoyed by the goal. Gareth Southgate has been strong at the back. He has grown up very quickly.

Almost 2-0 as Teddy Sheringham sweeps a first-time effort from a free kick towards goal. Good power on the shot but too close to Edwin Van der Sar.

The atmosphere now is truly something!

Just seeing the penalty incident again and the footwork from Paul Ince was truly sublime. Absolutely did a number on Danny Blind.

Netherlands, though, are looking to respond as the young Clarence Seedorf fires over after a decent break by the Dutch.
