It was the Friday night headline act that lived up to the billing, as Brentford beat West Bromwich Albion in a high-quality game of football.

The three points really draw the Bees into the automatic promotion mix, with just a five-point gap between them and the top two.

West Brom showed glimpses that they will be a difficult side to unseat from those places - despite tonight's loss.

What it also means is tomorrow's Championship fare is even more of must-follow, and you can do that right here.

Leeds-Fulham, Stoke-Middlesbrough, Preston-Cardiff... that's just three.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank told Sky Sports:

"I still think West Brom are in a better position than us and if I could be in that position I would prefer that.

"But we're really pleased with the performance tonight in many ways, defensively was 100% top, top performance.

"The back four with Pontus [Jansson] and big Ethan [Pinnock] defended everything and the full-backs worked so hard.

"We were very dangerous on the counter and we scored a beautiful goal. I'd like us to be sharper on the counter to kill the game off and better on the ball but we played the number one team and they're an unbelievably good side."

Brentford matchwinner Ollie Watkins told Sky Sports:

"It was a great game, we worked hard and ground the result out.

"It was all them second half, they had their spells but we got behind the ball and did what we needed to.

"We had one objective and we did it, the boys dug in and we got the three points.

"We've just got to focus on the next game now and take it from there."

Superb win for Brentford who have Ollie Watkins' first-half goal to show as reward for a really disciplined display against league leaders West Brom.

They dominated the opening 45, and showed calm and poise to ride out a West Brom fightback after half-time.

Now it's just five points between them and the top two. Talk about igniting a season?!

Slaven Bilic's side huffed and puffed, hitting the bar through Kenneth Zohore, but to no avail.

The Baggies still have that buffer in the automatic places. It's certainly not a season definer for them.

Again West Brom toss the ball forward, but it's the red and white stripes not the green and yellow ones who are coming up with the ball.

It was a good move to pick out Darnell Furlong on the right, whose cross was headed away by Ethan Pinnock.

Pereira's shot summed up West Brom's night so far. Then Romaine Sawyers gives away a free-kick. Hints of frustration.

If West Brom do get something out of this game they'll have Matheus Pereira to thank. He's been a ball of energy.

He might be a creative outlet but his GPS will be smoking, he's grafted all game.

Still Brentford just finding enough to keep them at bay.

Sam Johnstone had to be smart there to deny Bryan Mbuemo after Romaine Sawyers had given it away for West Brom.

Rico Henry scuttled down the left a moment ago as the home side again attacked but the ball is cleared.

Ethan Pinnock and Pontus Jansson are a great partnership at the back for the Bees.

Pinnock has that feel of a Rolls Royce, cool, calm, quiet, quick. Jansson is more a Subaru Impreza with a big sound system. Blood and thunder.

Josh Dasilva is limping off with a touch of cramp perhaps, and Kamohelo Mokotjo is coming on for Brentford.

Took one right in the kidneys after it broke to West Brom's Matheus Pereira with the goal tantalisingly before the Baggies midfielder.

Romaine Sawyers swiped the rebound over the top.

Callum Robinson by the way has come on for Grady Diangana.

West Brom had a big purple patch in this game, hitting the bar through Kenneth Zohore, but that mythical 'momentum' they were enjoying has swung back to the hosts.

Said Benrahma tried to latch onto a ball in the box but was swamped by Baggies defenders.
