But tonight's big winners at the top are West Brom, who have restored their five-point cushion over third-placed Brentford.

The Baggies are three victories away from the Premier League.

Hull's defeat at Bristol City tonight sees the Tigers in the bottom three, with four rounds of games remaining.

In today's 15:00 BST afternoon kick-off, Middlesbrough's 2-0 win at Millwall lifted Boro out of drop zone, two points above Hull.

But just four points separate the Tigers from Birmingham, who are 17th. Once again, it's very tight.

  4. Swans right in the mix after Blues winpublished at 21:53 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

Swansea could find themselves battling it out for an all-important Championship play-off spot with bitter Welsh rivals Cardiff City, after their 3-1 win at Birmingham pushed them within a point of the top six.

Rhian Brewster, Ben Cabango and Jay Fulton scored to cancel out Lukas Jutkiewicz's opener and push the Swans right into the mix with back-to-back wins.

However, their progress could be checked come the weekend as they prepare to face top two side Leeds.

“Getting the three points was really important at this stage of the season,” head coach Steve Cooper said.

“It was a difficult start and they really rocked us with that [early goal] but it was a brilliant reaction from the boys.

“I thought we played excellently in the first half in terms of our positioning and possession and looked a real threat, moving them about.

“It was just about waiting for that moment to create chances and that’s what we did.

“I was happy with the performance and the result and we have to get ready for the weekend now.”

Tonight's 3-1 away wins for both Preston and Swansea have seen them leapfrog Derby in the table, as the Rams lost at West Brom.

Preston go eighth, three points off the top six.

Swansea are seventh, just a point off their Welsh rivals Cardiff in sixth. It's looking tight.

  6. We won for the town, says Wigan boss Cookpublished at 21:47 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    FT: Wigan 1-0 QPR

After a tough week in which Wigan were placed in administration, staff have been made redundant and players and the coaching team have received reduced pay, their 1-0 win against Queens Park Rangers was a huge lift for manager Paul Cook.

Cook, who along with his squad have remained committed and dedicated even at this tough time, said the fate of the 75 support staff that lost their jobs and the thoughts of the fans were a galvanising factor.

"What a week it's been," Cook said. "We had to win a game of football, there was no other result for us, we were flat on Saturday, we're not as flat as people who have been made unemployed.

"We had to win for them tonight, for Wigan Athletic and the town. People have written us off with the '12 points and we're relegated'. We're not relegated and we're still fighting."

    FT: Sheff Wed 1-3 Preston

It's a 13th defeat in Sheffield Wednesday's past 22 games in all competitions since Christmas.

A deeply disappointing 2020 so far for Garry Monk's team.

Game, set and match. Wednesday are committing men forward but, at the other end, they're thin on the ground as Brad Potts clinically fires a cracking finish low in to the bottom corner.

Preston were trailing for a while but have battled back and are going to claim all three points.

  10. CLOSE!published at 21:36 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

Can Preston now see this result out and climb to eighth in the table?

This would be a very big win for them.

But now have North End snatched it? Preston have turned the game around and it's another substitute that's on the scoresheet.

Jayden Stockley rifles in a super finish from just outside the box, straight in to the bottom corner.

Seconds after they thought they'd fallen behind... Football, eh?

  13. DISALLOWED GOAL (Sheff Wed)published at 21:31 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Sheff Wed 1-1 Preston

The Owls are celebrating what they think is an 86th-minute winner as Julian Borner's header bounces in to the net from a corner... But it's ruled out. The linesman's flag is up on the near side. The keeper was impeded, it seems.

  14. McCann encouraged despite Hull in drop zonepublished at 21:28 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    FT: Bristol City 2-1 Hull

    Grant McCannImage source, Rex Features

Hull City's battle to avoid relegation from the Championship was dealt a blow tonight with a defeat by Bristol City that leaves them in the bottom three.

Despite a second-half rally, culminating in Jordy de Wijs' goal, the Tigers could not overcome the lead established by Famara Diedhiou and Jamie Paterson goals.

"It's not ideal," boss Grant McCann told BBC Radio Humberside. "We didn't come here to lose the game, I think you saw in the performance the boys are working ever so hard, they've done everything they can to try to get the wins in games that are coming thick and fast.

"Performance-wise and chances created were good, we're getting into dangerous areas, and tonight the first goal is a tad fortune as it ricochets and bounces to their centre-forward who scores, and the second one there's not much we can do about a free-kick into the top corner from 25-yards.

"The response second-half was excellent, we were a bit slow first 25, 30 minutes but after we were better."

  15. Postpublished at 21:26 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

There are just under 10 minutes to go.

Preston are level and it's 'game on' at Hillsborough. Scott Sinclair had only just come on as a substitute, when he pounced on a mistake in the Owls defence, touched the ball past one man and then tucked in to the net past Joe Wildsmith.

And the visitors run to get the ball straight away, and sprint with it back to the centre circle. They want a winner.

  17. No pain, no gain for Robins caretaker Holdenpublished at 21:18 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    FT: Bristol City 2-1 Hull

    Dean HoldenImage source, Rex Features

Dean Holden was put through an emotional ringer by Bristol City in his first game as caretaker boss following Lee Johnson's departure, but was able to celebrate a first win in 10 games after a 2-1 victory over Hull City.

His side went 2-0 up at Ashton Gate after Famara Diedhiou's goal and a belting free-kick from Jamie Paterson, before Jordy de Wijs pulled one back to set up a frantic finale.

"My head was pounding at half-time, I had to take some paracetamol," he told BBC Radio Bristol. "It was good that we got the three points, the first half performance is something we're looking for.

"The second-half they [Hull] threw caution to the wind, fighting for their lives and they're quite good going forward.

"We had to weather the storm, the lads had to dig in and there are different ways to win a game. They threw themselves in front of everything."

    FT: West Brom 2-0 Derby

Derby's Louie Sibley is sent off by Jeremy SimpsonImage source, Rex Features

Boss Phillip Cocu says Derby County will appeal against referee Jeremy Simpson's decision to send off teenager Louie Sibley in Wednesday's 2-0 defeat by West Brom.

Sibley was deemed to have kicked out at Baggies defender Dara O'Shea after getting his legs caught up in a challenge.

The Dutchman had seen the footage by the time he spoke to BBC Radio Derby, and was critical of O’Shea's involvement in the incident.

"I was already convinced it wasn't a red card, now I'm 200%. It's a disgrace he gets a red card," Cocu said.

"You have to be absolutely sure to give a red card. We will definitely appeal. Some will say the player of West Brom is clever with his provocation, I just think it's sad. If you simulate in that way, why can't you get a punishment after."

The Rams lost the chance to gain ground on Cardiff in sixth and were overhauled by Swansea in the table, but there were no complaints about the result.

Cocu added: "West Brom deserved to win, they were just a bit more experienced, they had excellent individual quality and it's hard to stop them from the wing positions.

"There's no shame, we had a lot of youngsters on the field today and it was a good experience for them."

  20. SUBSTITUTIONSpublished at 21:10 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Sheff Wed 1-0 Preston

The hosts make a change, as goalscorer Jacob Murphy has to go off. Moses Odubajo comes on. Murphy seems to be in some pain.

Preston make two subs, as Ben Pearson and Ryan Ledson are replaced by Daniel Johnson and Brad Potts.
