Preston look really up for this. No doubt the past 24 hours' losses for Cardiff and Derby have given them extra hope and motivation for a top-six charge.

A win would lift North End just three points off sixth spot.

  2. Screams for Wigan winpublished at 20:05 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Wigan 1-0 QPR

You could tell how much that victory meant to Wigan's coaching staff by the screams of joy that accompanied the final whistle.

There is a lot of work for the Latics still to do but one minor bit of good news. Even with the 12-point deduction, they would not be bottom of the Championsip table.

  3. CLOSE!published at 20:03 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Preston

Down the right, Alan Browne plays in a cracking ball towards Sean Maguire, inside the six-yard box, but Maguire can't quite get a contact on it in the middle.

It's all North End at the moment.

    Bristol City 2-1 Hull

Dean Holden's caretaker spell in charge yields a big three points and a first win since February for Bristol City.

The perfect response from the Robins after Lee Johnson's departure, and they had to work hard.

No faulting effort from Grant McCann's Hull who plugged away til the last and made life uncomfortable for their hosts but Jordy de Wijs' goal not enough to snaffle the points.

  5. Postpublished at 20:02 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Bristol City 2-1 Hull

It is strange to think there is so much tension at Ashton Gate, but there's none of the usual nailbiting from the crowd, no roars of encouragement or panicked utterings.

Just 22 players desperately battling out the final moments.

  6. Postpublished at 19:59 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Preston

The hosts are having to withstand some strong Preston pressure in the early stages at Hillsborough, but Joey Pelupessy gets a strong block in. Moments later, Andrew Hughes heads wide from eight yards as the visitors just keep on coming.

  7. Postpublished at 19:59 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Bristol City 2-1 Hull

Bristol City have fingertips on the precipice it feels, as Daniel Bentley needs to be at his best to claw away Josh Bowler's fierce effort.

Still the one goal in it. Four minutes of added time.

  8. FULL-TIMEpublished at 19:58 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Wigan 1-0 QPR

What a win for the Latics! All the off-field uncertainty around administration, points deductions and players receiving reduced wages has been put to the back of Wigan minds as Kieffer Moore scores the winner to see off QPR.

One defeat in 11 games is a magnificent example of how good a job Paul Cook is doing.

QPR were really poor at times. Not the finish Mark Warburton wanted following the restart.

  9. FULL-TIMEpublished at 19:54 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Birmingham 1-3 Swansea

    Swansea celebrateImage source, PA Media

Swansea move within a point of Cardiff - who occupy the final play-off place at present in the Championship.

They had to come from behind after Lukas Jutkiewicz's opener with goals from Rhian Brewster, Ben Cabango and Jay Fulton.

Blues still aren't safe... but they're lucky a few teams down at the bottom are struggling to get those results themselves.

  10. CLOSE!published at 19:54 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Preston

North End could easily be in front, but Patrick Bauer's header from a left-wing free-kick drops just wide of the far post.

  11. Postpublished at 19:53 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Bristol City 2-1 Hull

Inside the final 10 minutes. We're behind at Ashton Gate as it was quite a bruising first-half which saw Nathan Baker depart with a head injury and Jordy de Wijs go down injured a couple of times.

Time running out for Hull to avoid ending the night in the bottom three.

  12. CLOSE!published at 19:53 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Preston

Now it's Preston's turn to almost make it 1-0 in the late kick-off, but Tom Barkhuizen hits the side netting after getting in behind the Owls defence.

  13. Postpublished at 19:50 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Birmingham 1-3 Swansea

Three minutes of added time at St Andrew's. This goose is cooked I think.

  14. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 19:49 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Preston

Dominic Iorfa strikes the crossbar with a header for Sheffield Wednesday, after Barry Bannan's viciously-swung corner.

First warning sign for Preston there...

  15. KICK-OFFpublished at 19:48 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Preston

    HillsboroughImage source, Rex Features

Our final game of the night is under way at an empty Hillsborough.

I think it's possibly the ground where the emptiness feels eeriest. Such a vast stadium.

  16. Postpublished at 19:45 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Wigan 1-0 QPR

Danny Fox has a brilliant chance to seal it for Wigan, attacking Lee Evans' corner but heading over the top.

His personal gesticulation as he walks away tells you he knows that could have been better.

    Birmingham 1-3 Swansea

Lee Camp saves from Rhian BrewsterImage source, Getty Images

Brilliant save by Lee Camp. The Blues keeper is not the tallest of custodians but is able to get a stretched out hand to Rhian Brewster's lob and deny the Swans a fourth.

  18. Postpublished at 19:41 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Bristol City 2-1 Hull

Mallik Wilks wants that third goal in as many games, driving into the box and testing Daniel Bentley, who makes a smart save to keep Bristol City in front.

Hull still showing plenty of fight.

  19. Postpublished at 19:39 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Birmingham 1-3 Swansea

Freddie Woodman is on hand to retain Swansea's two goal cushion and deny Birmingham's Lukas Jutkiewicz.

The striker already has one for the Blues tonight having opened the scoring but this latest effort is thwarted from a tight angle.

  20. Postpublished at 19:35 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Bristol City 2-1 Hull

Not a night for centre-halves tonight.

    Another injury break, another collision.

Jordy de Wijs certainly hasn't been put off sticking his head where it hurts as he was involved and is having a bit more treatment.
