It's not really got going yet, with both sides perhaps needing some time to get used to these unusual circumstances.

Off they go for a half-time breather.

The fourth official - wearing a face mask - indicates there'll be three minutes of added time at the end of this first half.

It's been a fairly flat half, in all honesty. It's been neither the roaring, intense, flowing stuff that some play-off first legs offer, nor the nervy, edgy, tense affair that some others can be.

The visitors are forced into a change as Lee Martin limps off after some treatment on the field.

Matt Jay is coming on to replace him in an attacking position, just off the front man Ryan Bowman.

Along with the rolling traffic outside the stadium, you can hear almost every word the players say (or shout) to each other, including a lot of expletives. We've definitely had more swear words than efforts at goal so far! Here's hoping for more of the latter as the game goes on.

Look away now, Exeter fans (sorry). The side that finished in fifth place in League Two has only been promoted via the play-offs in one of the past 10 campaigns.

That was Phil Brown’s Southend United, who went up in 2014-15. They played out a tense, evenly-fought semi-final against Stevenage and I was lucky to be at both ties. The atmospheres were brilliant. It's a very, very strange contrast tonight.

The drinks break was over in a flash. Moments later, Colchester attempt another long ball over the top, looking for the run of Luke Norris down the right channel, but he's flagged offside.

That looked tight actually. I'm not sure he was off. But nevertheless, the attack comes to nothing.

We've no VAR in League Two, of course...

Just as Exeter looked to be building their best spell of the game so far, it's time for the players to go off for a scheduled drinks break, marking the halfway point in this first half.

That's another part of the temporary rules for this summer's unique restart to the campaign.

Colchester win a free-kick in a dangerous position outside the area, just to the left of centre.

Former Arsenal and Birmingham left-back Cohen Bramall fires straight at goal from it, and his effort is helped over the bar by Exeter keeper Lewis Ward.

Colchester's Frank Nouble, who you may remember began his career at West Ham and was an England youth international, has been looking to cause problems down the hosts' right so far in this first half.

The 28-year-old looks lively this evening.

As part of the added safety protocols brought in for the resumption of elite football, the match ball was given a thorough clean before kick-off.

The hosts have been looking to pick out Luke Norris up top with long balls behind the Exeter backline, but the latest is just a bit too heavy for him to chase.

It's been a pretty quiet start, which is perhaps no surprise given how long these sides have been out of competitive action.

Exeter grab the game's first corner and Randell Williams' delivery from the right does find Ryan Bowman in the middle, but Bowman heads over the bar.

This season's two meetings between Colchester and Exeter both ended in draws, the latest a goalless affair at City's St James Park back in January.

Neither side has threatened a goal in the very early exchanges this evening.
