  1. 'Bayern are my favourites to win Champions League'published at 19:55 British Summer Time 14 August 2020

    Chris Sutton
Premier League winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

Bayern Munich are my favourites to win the Champions League. They are the most rounded team. I think they have problems defensively, but Sergio Aguero is a big loss for Manchester City.

City have a tough game against Lyon who have real pace on the break. Memphis Depay, let's get it right, was hopeless at Manchester United but he has been a completely different player for Lyon.

Depay leads the line well and he is their main man.

  2. 'I give them a chance because Messi can do it any time'published at 19:54 British Summer Time 14 August 2020

Our football European football experts gave their views on the previous two quarter-finals, here is what they think about the forthcoming match.

Listen to the full Football Daily: Euro League show by clicking here

Kristof Terreur: "Bayern are favourites against Barcelona, but there is Lionel Messi and anything is possible. Robert Lewandowski is having the season of his life, only four goals behind Cristiano Ronaldo’s record.

Defensively Bayern have players coming back, they look so strong. It is normal for people to put them favourite.

Guillem Balague: "If it was two legs absolutely Bayern would win easily. But now the fear factor will play a part - the tournament will be slow, because teams wont want to risk much. We will end up saying this is the tournament of one player and that is where Barca are hoping.

"This is the coaching staff of Barca thinking if we get 15-20 mins of good football and we get Messi doing something spectacular we have to then defend deep. We can't do the old dynamic football: we have to suffer. I give them a chance because Messi can do it any time. Even Barca can defend then. Predictions are completely useless in this tournament."

The expected words of Barca coach Quique Setien. It comes after former Bayern midfielder Lothar Matthaus said earlier this week that the Polish striker had overtaken Messi as the best player in the world.

    Here's Quique:

"Lewandowski is a great footballer but he is not at the level of Leo, clearly.

"Lewandowski is in great form, he has scored 13 goals in the Champions League (and 53 goals in 44 games in all competitions this season) and it is true that he is very well supported by many team-mates who can also do damage.

"He's in a great moment but Leo is too. We saw it the other day against Napoli."

  6. Lewandowski - the 'ultimate finisher'published at 19:47 British Summer Time 14 August 2020

    Chris Sutton
Premier League winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

Robert Lewandowski is such an important player for Bayern Munich. We always talk about his goalscoring ability but he is also such a good leader of the line.

He had a hand in all seven goals Bayern scored over two legs against Chelsea and that tells you everything you need to know about him.

Lewandowski is such a good fit for this team. He has good players around him, he gets good service, but he is the ultimate finisher.

He's not too bothered about winning the Ballon d'Or. He's more worried about winning the Champions League.

John McEnerney: “Los Geriatricos” need 2 put in a huge shift & produce a vintage performance or the most fickle fans in football will be baying for Blaugrana blood. They can match BM if their hearts & minds are at their max but the memories of Roma & LFC loom large in their heads!

Professor Ndebele: This Barcelona line up looks rigid, only Messi Magic will help them.

  8. Who is Hansi Flick?published at 19:43 British Summer Time 14 August 2020

Now Hans-Dieter Flick, "Hansi" to his mates and everyone else, has been knocking around for a while at coaching level - he's 55 (only old in some people's eyes), although like Julian Nagelsmann (33) he's come into the general football public's consciousness only in recent times.

The former Bayern midfielder was a manager at Hoffenheim - then in the fourth tier - before eventually becoming assistant to Joachim Low where the pair led Germany to the World Cup in 2014.

Bayern then came calling for a new assistant to Niko Kovac - but then the Croat was ditched and Flick was promoted. He's done pretty well since tbh.

German football expert Constantin Eckner has the lowdown on the Bayern boss.

  9. Messi 'too old to join another club'published at 19:39 British Summer Time 14 August 2020

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Radio Catalunya reporter Ernest Macia, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live on the future of 33-year-old Lionel Messi at Barcelona: "He has not been happy the last three or four seasons.

"However, he has stayed when he has had the chance to join Pep Guardiola or go elsewhere.

"He prefers to stay here. Now I honestly think he is too old to make a change because he wants to be a one-club man."

  10. All-time great Champions League quarter-finalspublished at 19:36 British Summer Time 14 August 2020

Now there was a vote for this, but that's now closed - however, you can still read Tom Rostance's look back at the great quarter-finals of this competition.

Think of it like the Sport website trying to do a football version of TOTP2 or those Channel 4 countdown (not Countdown) shows.

You never know, Barcelona v Bayern Munich might end up joining that list.

  11. Could this finally be Lewandowski's year?published at 19:33 British Summer Time 14 August 2020

Lovingly put together by our Emlyn Begley:

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has never won the European Cup or Champions League. He lost the 2013 final against Bayern when he was a Borussia Dortmund player.

The 31-year-old is the top scorer in the tournament's history to have never won it. His double against Chelsea took him on to 66 goals, only behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Raul (who have won five, four and three Champions Leagues respectively).

The Poland international is also set to be the first person other than Ronaldo or Messi to win the Champions League Golden Boot outright since Kaka in 2007.

Lewandowski has 13 goals in seven Champions League games this term, seven goals clear of anyone left in the competition.

He is only four behind Ronaldo's record of 17 goals for Real Madrid in 2013-14 - although only has a maximum of three games left because of second legs being removed.

  12. Barca aren't even the best team in Spainpublished at 19:30 British Summer Time 14 August 2020

    Chris Sutton
Premier League winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

Barcelona and Bayern Munich are giants of European football. Bayern come into this in terrific form while Barcelona's standards have slipped.

I saw Arturo Vidal say Barca are the best team in the world. They're not even the best team in Spain.

Barca fans are unhappy and the team is under pressure. But while they have players like Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez you just can't rule them out.

  13. Team newspublished at 19:27 British Summer Time 14 August 2020

Both Antoine Griezmann and Ivan Rakitic drop to the bench as Barcelona coach Quique Setien sets up his team to cope with the threat of Bayern Munich by bringing back Arturo Vidal and Sergio Busquets.

Barca's attack is boosted by the return of flying forward Ousmane Dembele, who who has not played since November after a string of injury concerns.

Barcelona: ter Stegen, Nelson Semedo, Pique, Lenglet, Jordi Alba, Sergi Roberto, Busquets, de Jong, Vidal, Messi, Suarez.

Subs: Rakitic, Dembele, Neto, Griezmann, Firpo, Pena, Puig, Fati, Araujo, Monchu, Mingueza, Reis.

Bayern stick with the XI that started in the comprehensive second leg win over Chelsea.

Striker Robert Lewandowski, the runaway top scorer in the competition with 13 goals, starts up front.

Bayern Munich: Neuer, Kimmich, Boateng, Alaba, Davies, Thiago, Goretzka, Gnabry, Muller, Perisic, Lewandowski.

Subs: Odriozola, Sule, Javi Martinez, Coutinho, Cuisance, Lucas, Tolisso, Ulreich, Coman, Zirkzee, Hoffmann, Musiala.

  19. Barca v Bayern: pre-match statspublished at 19:06 British Summer Time 14 August 2020

    • Barcelona and Bayern Munich have both reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the 18th time (in 24 and 23 appearances respectively), more than any other team.
    • Barcelona are in the quarter-finals for the 13th consecutive year - that is every season since 2007-08, a record in the history of the competition.
    • Barcelona have lost more Champions League games against Bayern than any other club, losing five of their eight matches against them (W2 D1).
    • Barcelona have lost just two of their last 31 Champions League matches (W19 D10) and are unbeaten in this season's competition (W5 D3); they are one of only three teams still yet to taste defeat this season, along with opponents Bayern Munich and Manchester City.
    • Bayern striker Lewandowski has scored 13 goals in just seven Champions League appearances this season, averaging a goal every 47 minutes - in the history of the European Cup/Champions League, this is the best minutes per goal ratio in a single campaign of players to play at least 500 minutes that season.
