Over the past few months, Leeds legends Norman Hunter, Trevor Cherry and Jack Charlton have all passed away.

And former defender Lucas Radebe told BBC Radio 5 live that there could be no better tribute than winning promotion.

"[They were] great servants of the club, legendary," he said. "And that will inspire the boys as well.

"Norman Hunter was working at the club, a lot of us knew him very well, the current players met him...It's an inspiration to the boys.

"They're hungry to play in the Premier League. It would be a fitting tribute to those great legends."

Lucas Radebe became a cult hero at Elland Road as he captained Leeds during their last spell in the top flight, helping them to third place in the Premier League and to the Champions League semi-finals.

And the former South Africa defender is delighted to see them back.

"If you mention the name Leeds United - you look for them in the Premier League," Radebe told BBC Radio 5 live. "That's how great the club is. It's been a long time that they've been dwindling in the lower leagues.

"I've been really impressed with a lot of players - Marcel Bielsa has turned them around. Kalvin Phillips is one of them, Liam Cooper at the back, Ben White, absolutely fantastic.

"It's been a long time. Leeds United fans are very special fans, they'll never leave the club. Look when we dropped to the Championship, we still had a great following. They've played a massive part.

"Andrea (owner Andrea Radrizzani) has done miracles by bringing Bielsa on board - and actually bringing everybody that works at the club, the passion and the love - that's what goes through the club at the moment."

  6. 'We've been the best team all season'published at 20:48 British Summer Time 17 July 2020

    Leeds promoted to Premier League

Captain Liam Cooper said promotion back to the Premier League took Leeds back to "where we've always belonged".

"It's unbelievable and it's still not properly sunk in," he told BBC Radio Leeds.

"Our club, our fans and our players have sacrificed so much - we've been in the doldrums for 16 years.

"To be part of this team and to lead this team to promotion back to where we know we've always belonged is unbelievable.

"We deserve it - we've been the best team all season on a consistent level and we've got the job done.

"We set out to get promoted and now we want to go and be champions and lift that trophy."

    Marcelo BielsaImage source, Rex Features

He's already one of the most feted managers in world football, just ask Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, and now Marcelo Bielsa is set to test his managerial skills in the Premier League with Leeds United.

Bielsa is following in the footsteps of Howard Wilkinson, the last man to bring top flight football back to Elland Road, and who also brought the First Division championship to Leeds two years later in 1991-92.

"He's certainly unique," Wilkinson told BBC Sport of the Argentine. "He's got his own way of doing things, so he's true to himself and authentic.

"He's different - and he's brave enough to be different, because he must have a self-confidence about what he does and how he does it."That's enormously valuable when you're a manager, because that's your biggest weapon - influence - and that influence grows when you've got their respect and they think you're honest.

"What they get is what they see. Over two seasons he's shown, like Frank Sinatra isn't it? You know 'My Way'? He certainly does it his way."

Few teams in the Premier League can boast the roll of honour which Leeds United can. League championships, FA Cups, League Cups, European silverware... they've got it in the cabinet.

With that legacy comes a huge worldwide fanbase, a big brand, and an asset to the multi-million pound world of the modern top flight, says former boss Howard Wilkinson - the last man to lead Leeds to promotion in 1990.

"It means more to the Premier League than maybe it does to Leeds, in the sense that they'll bring a lot to the party, if things do go well," Wilkinson told BBC Sport.

"They'll add to the attraction of that league which is now a worldwide league in terms of spectators. I don't think any club deserves to be there, but it's got a lot of ingredients which help it become a big club if it goes about it the right way."

  10. Leeds have 'best manager in the world'published at 20:33 British Summer Time 17 July 2020

    Leeds promoted to Premier League

One of the key figures in Leeds' success this season has been homegrown midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

And the 24-year-old Leeds fan said he could not believe he was rooting for West Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield to do them a favour.

"I can't put it into words, it's crazy," Phillips told BBC Radio Leeds.

"When the manager first came in I never thought I would be in this position two years down the line.

"The manager and the coaching staff are a massive part of that. He's he best manager in the world. There's no manager I would rather be under than Marcelo Bielsa right now.

"At an age when I'm trying to develop, he's the perfect manager to have.

"The Premier League is the best league in the world and after 16 years we're back in there."

  13. 'Every single game will be a sell-out'published at 20:25 British Summer Time 17 July 2020

    Leeds promoted to Premier League

There will be teenagers who have only ever heard about Leeds playing in the Premier League, and yet next season, they'll get to see if for themselves.

Sixteen years after relegation, the Whites will again plan trips to Manchester United's Old Trafford, to Liverpool's Anfield, to the new stadiums of Arsenal and Tottenham and others for regular season action - not to mention welcoming those giants to the partisan atmosphere of Elland Road.

Former Leeds defender Danny Mills knows all about that sensory experience, the passion and the noise of the club's support.

"Every single game will be massive," Mills told BBC Sport. "Leeds will sell-out every single seat away from home, it doesn’t matter where it is.

"The home games - once fans are allowed back, in hopefully that’s going to be before too long - that’s what it’s all about the fans. Relate that to [Marcelo] Bielsa as well and the way that they play, I think it’s an absolute firecracker.

"I think the Premier League will be better for Leeds in it. It’s a big club with a big history."

Huddersfield Town manager Danny Cowley speaking on Sky Sports:

"Congratulations to Leeds - they're the best team in the division for me followed closely by West Brom and Brentford.

"I think it says a lot for the strength of this league as there's a lot of good teams in there and it's going to be very exciting with the players Leeds have for them in the Premier League next season."

FT: Huddersfield Town 2-1 West Brom

A reminder that it's not all about Leeds tonight. It was the performance by West Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town that has seen them over the line.

Not only that, but it is a result that all-but secures the Terriers' place in the Championship for next season.

    Cowley cellyImage source, Rex Features

"I though the players were immense tonight," boss Danny Cowley told BBC Radio Leeds. "It was a really committed, hard-working performance.

"We knew that we were playing against a very good West Brom team but we tried to put a game plan together that would allow us to win the game.

"We felt this game would get tired and we felt if we could frustrate West Brom they would have to open up, and so it proved.

"The players deserve all the credit this evening."

Having finally battled their way back to the Premier League having dropped as low as League One during the past 16 years, Leeds United will already be looking to make their stay a more permanent one.

Marcelo Bielsa has built a side that has swept through the Championship in his style, a blend of talented locals such as Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper as well as a touch of continental quality in Pablo Hernandez and Mateusz Klich.

However, the Premier League will be a new challenge, and the way the squad is strengthened could be an indication of how they will fare.

They have to be sensible," former Leeds defender Danny Mills told BBC Sport. "They can’t go out and spend ridiculous amounts of money, but I think what we’ve seen from Marcelo Bielsa, is that that’s not his way.

"He runs a very very small squad of players. Of course to stay in the Premier League you’re probably have to add to that, he probably has to bring in a bit of extra quality.

"But I think the owner has been very sensible with what they’re doing. Of course there is a little bit of investment from other places that could take the club to the next level if they so wish. But it needs to be done in stages."
