Kerr with another chance and this time she does manage to hit the target. The ball is just under her foot, though, and she can't generate the power to beat Roebuck.

For the uninitiated, Kerr was very much bought by Chelsea to bring the goals. She is one of world football's superstars. Not quite happened yet for her in a Blues shirt, though. She netted once in seven games last season. Could easily have quadrupled that tally this afternoon.

It's great build-up. Fran Kirby put it on a plate for her. Completely misses it. It's been a nightmare for Sam Kerr. She doesn't keep her eye on it. She takes her eye off it at the last mintue.

You can see Emma Hayes is frustrated. Where Chelsea want to go to, she has to bury those chances.

Sam Kerr is having an absolute shocker.

Five big opportunities have gone begging now. This is the best chance of the lot. Fran Kirby gets away down the right and plays a low ball into the middle to put the opener surely on a plate for her strike-partner.

Somehow, Kerr manages to put her shot past the far post. She immediately slumps to the turf. She knows.

As you were. City with the patient, passing approach while Chelsea have players behind the ball, harrying and looking for the break.

No changes at the break. We are back under way.

You've got to think that Sam Mewis is not far away from getting some match action here. The American is a proper marquee signing for City and she could really make the difference. Case in point: she scored and assisted two goals after coming off the bench in a friendly against Everton last week.

Chelsea started really well. They caused problems. City gave the ball away a lot. But roles were reversed towards the end. So many chances.

These are possibly the two moments that came closest to a goal. A brilliant run from Kelly is undone by an ill-advised pass. Kelly is then later denied by the post...

The quality in the final third has been both teams' Achilles heel. I think 0-0 is a fair refledction. Both sides are rusty given the Covid situation and the fact it's the first game of the season.

    Chelsea 0-0 Man City

The half ends with a City corner that prompts a bit of pinball in the box but is eventually cleared.

A goalless but reasonably entertaining half, that. Clear rustiness on show but it's been far from a dull affair.

Again, Chelsea find a way in down the right. Kirby tees up Mjelde, whose cross beats the diving Roebuck and flies just in front of her Blues team-mates in the box.

If ever a period of play illustrated a lack of match sharpness it is this. Steph Houghton overruns the ball and gives the ball to Chelsea, who break but can't capitalise on a two-on-one situation because of a poor touch from Ji.

It is now Chelsea finding joy with the booming balls out wide. Kirby is finding space regularly on the right.

    City need to check that.

Chelsea now with a little period of attacking pressure. After a cross from the right, following good work from Kirby, City keeper Ellie Roebuck is able to stick out a well-timed leg to clear the ball from danger. The Blues come again but Maren Mjelde's effort is blocked before Roebuck can be called upon again.

Sam Kerr... She's one of the best strikers in the world and was scoring for fun before her move to Chelsea. She's yet to hit the ground running in England and again today, she's missed a number of big chances. Short on confidence?

Great play from Jill - getting tight to Ji. I thought she was going to chip the keeper, she saw her off the line. Kelly did well with her weak foot and kept it low. Unlucky.

This has come to life a bit now. City pour forward and Stanway forces a good save from Berger, but her push away falls to the onrushing Kelly. She strikes the ball well but bang against the upright.

Chelsea should have scored. Again. Sam Kerr should have scored. Again.

Ji takes the free-kick and hits the wall, sending the ball looping up to the unmarked Kerr, who looks to steer a header into the far corner but gets it all wrong, sending the ball wide.

You don't need me to tell you how good Kerr is - anyone who saw her score a hat-trick in the 2019 World Cup can testify to that - but she's not at her sharpest here yet.
