Former Birmingham defender on BBC Radio WM

From start to finish the Birmingham performance level was night and day compared to what it was at the end of last season.

They were hard to beat, and if that is Aitor Karanka's set-up then I'm all for it.

I'm sure Karanka is buzzing to get three points and a clean sheet.

    Birmingham 1-0 Brentford

Jeremie Bela's first-half header was enough for Birmingham to beat last season's beaten play-off finalists Brentford.

It's a first win in 17 games in all competitions for the Blues - and an opening-day three points for new manager Aitor Karanka.

Brentford hit the woodwork twice and largely dominated the second half, but couldn't make the most of their possession.

That's a real kick in the teeth for Gareth Ainsworth's Wycombe, but this is a lesson for them in this league and one they'll need to learn quickly.

    Massive chance for the visitors.

Centre-back Pontus Jansson meets an inswinging corner from the left on the edge of this six-yard box.

But the Bees captain sends his header down into the ground and over the bar.

You get the feeling it won't be Brentford's day.
