Just going back to that entry at 59 mins.

Roy Hodgson had Javier Zanetti, Paul Ince and Ivan Zamorano playing in his Inter side.

Carlo Ancelotti had Fabio Cannavaro, Lillian Thuram, Gianfranco Zola and Hernan Crespo in his Parma side.

    Beautiful times.

Everton are the slightly more comfortable team with the ball. They are just knocking the ball about nicely in midfield and look to have a really nice balance to the team.

Eberi Eze's approach play is decent, he looks dangerous but has had zero end product so far.

Football is supposed to be about interpretation, which is why it has laws not rules. It becomes much worse with rules, as we are seeing.

  7. CLOSE!published at 55 mins

    Crystal Palace 1-2 Everton

Everton should have had a third and now this would have been four.

Again, Jamez Rodriguez's corner is spot on, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Michael Keane get in each other's way and Jordan Ayew can hack the ball off the line.

If Dominic Calvert-Lewin hit the target it would have been a certain goal but he just dangles his leg out and it hits his studs and just bounces wide. Like he paused and didn't expect to get the ball.

Abdoulaye Doucoure is a brilliant runner. Almost creates space for other midfield players. He is the perfect player to play when you have Rodriguez and maybe Gomes in there, who are the most mobile players on the planet.

    Dominic Calvert-Lewin should bury this.

James Rodriguez whips in a corner, DCL ghosts in between two defenders but stabs his effort wide from six yards out.

Basically, if it hits the arm a penalty will be given.

    Crystal Palace 1-2 Everton

    • Hand/arm is clearly away from the body and outside the "body line" .
    • Player clearly leans into the path of the ball.
    • Ball travels some distance.
    • Ball touches hand/arm that is clearly raised above the shoulder.
    • Player falls and the hand/arm is extended laterally or vertically away from the body.
    • Deflection clearly makes no difference to the ball touching a hand/arm that is clearly extended away from the body and/or above the shoulder

Owen: Seems like the trouble with handball is you can either have a very strict rule which maintains consistency but provides situations like today, or you can allow more interpretation which leads to "that same handball wasn't given last week".

Rich Wilsher: Pens produce many more goals than shots, so if I'm a coach, I'm telling my attacking players to kick the ball where a defending player's arm will be, rather than shoot. That's right, I'm telling my strikers NOT TO SHOOT IN A FOOTBALL MATCH

David Taylor: Collina was the best referee in the world. Can't understand why he is being so stubborn about changing this new handball rule. It's clearly not working and it's this rule - rather than VAR - that is spoiling games.

If it hits the hand or not. Intentional handball and unintentional handball are miles apart. How can anybody not see the difference? Massive rethink of that rule is needed.

    HT: Crystal Palace 1-2 Everton

    Matt Upson
Former England and West Ham defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Just try to smash the ball at a defender's arm seems to be the new tactic. I can't see a massive amount of difference between the two penalty decisions involving Joel Ward. To look at one and say 'yes' and the other 'no' - I'm a bit lost. It also took a minute or two for VAR to flag up the issue. The game has gone on and you don't know what you are looking at.

  20. 'This is not in the spirit of the game'published at 15:53 British Summer Time 26 September 2020

    Crystal Palace 1-2 Everton

    Martin Keown
Former Arsenal defender on Final Score

Defenders are going to have to start playing with straitjackets on. What is Joel Ward to do there?

This is not within the spirit of the game. It is not in the spirit of the game I joined as a young boy.

But it is part of the new rules - and I don't think it's right. There is absolutely no way [Ward] is trying to handball that and he can't get out the way of it.

It is ball to arm, it is not arm to ball. It hits him.

I'm not sure I would want to be a defender anymore, with this current law.
