  3. 'I wouldn't come out here and mug myself off'published at 21:20 British Summer Time 21 September 2020

    Aston Villa 1-0 Sheffield Utd

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder to Sky Sports on two contentious decisions.

"The first one John has got the wrong side and both of them are pulling each other. The linesman can see it so why is he not flagging if he thinks it's a foul? I think it's a really harsh decision. It's a bit of a tussle in my opinion.

"The second one, law changes... double jeopardy... maybe I'm confused and need to go on a referee's course. My understanding is that if Matt Targett makes an attempt to tackle the ball it's a yellow - Basham's placed himself between the ball and Targett, he's about to pull the trigger and there's no way he's made an effort to tackle.

"I am disappointed in the two major decisions. I am disappointed that we have conceded a goal from a set play.

"Why didn't the referee go over to the monitor? I wouldn't come out here and mug myself off, if I thought it was a clear sending off I'd say so. I'm not going to mug myself off on Sky. Why didn't he go to the monitor, why didn't Stockley Park say 'it's a bit of tussle and look at it yourself'?

"It won't become a bad run because I believe in the players and they believe in themselves but we have stop shooting ourselves in the foot. At the moment we're just in that period where we're helping teams too much."

  8. 'It's like scoring a hat-trick'published at 21:14 British Summer Time 21 September 2020

FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Sheffield United

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to Sky Sports, on his penalty save: "I follow my instincts. You study but at the end of the day, I study my instincts.

"All the goalies work on Sheff Utd but I follow my instincts. It's like scoring a hat-trick for me.

"I know the history and fans of the club. When I had the possibility, I had no doubt it was the club I wanted to sign for. It was a really solid performance from everybody.

"I like to play with the ball. I played futsal in Argentina so I'm confident with my feet. If we have to go long we will, but it's something we can work on."

  9. 'We've been more aggressive'published at 21:12 British Summer Time 21 September 2020

FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Sheffield United

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith to BBC Sport: "A very good start, to get three points and a clean sheet you can't ask for more. I thought we stared the game the better and the game changes with the sending off.

"We've worked on Tyrone Mings getting across the near post, flicking it on and Ezri Konsa arriving. It's difficult when they go in with two banks of four. We probably should have scored more.

"Since lockdown, defensively I think we've been more agressive.

"A great start for Emi Martinez, Matty Cash did OK and so did Ollie Watkins. Emi has Premier League experience and big club experience.

"We've given Mings a new deal and the number of headers he's won today I think he's on a heading bonus."

  10. 'We have to stop shooting ourselves in the foot'published at 21:09 British Summer Time 21 September 2020

    Aston Villa 1-0 Sheffield Utd

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder to BBC Sport on John Egan's red card: "I wanted to clear up (with referee Graham Scott) the decisions he made. Why wasn't there a look at the monitor? Why wasn't there intervention from VAR?

"Both boys are grappling there. The linesman never once raises his flag for a foul. I don't see many Villa players running to the referee.

"The penalty - Egan gets sent off 35 yards from goal, Matt Targett makes no effort to win the ball...

"The double jeopardy is only when the opposition player makes a challenge for the ball, the ball is four yards away, so unless he's got spider legs he can wrap around - and he hasn't because I've watched it.

"You look at it and it's Premier League football and you wonder what's going off.

"We have to stop shooting ourselves in the foot, we're giving teams handouts. We have to dig a bit deeper but I don't think we're a million miles off our first result."

  11. 'Only a matter of time'published at 21:06 British Summer Time 21 September 2020

FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Sheffield United

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa goalscorer Ezri Konsa to Sky Sports: "It was a great win. They went down to 10 men early-on and sometimes you can get complacent. It was only a matter of time before we scored.

"It's something we work on. I knew if Ty [Tyrone Mings] gets a flick-on, I'd be there for the goal. I had space so I had to generate the power with my head."

    Wolves 0-2 Man City

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Molineux

Wolves coming back from 2-0 down to win the corresponding fixture 3-2 was probably the most memorable match I attended last season.

This place was absolutely rocking that night from start to finish.

With no fans to urge them on, I don't see a repeat from the hosts this evening. City are far too good at the moment.
