    Newport 0-0 Watford

League Two Newport have an early attack as Josh Sheehan breaks forward but he overhits his pass and Tristan Abrahams can't reach it.

  3. Wilshere starts for Hammerspublished at 19:06 British Summer Time 22 September 2020

West Ham v Hull (19:30 BST)

There have been some late changes to the West Ham line-up...

Issa Diop and Josh Cullen have been replaced by Harrison Ashby and Jack Wilshere in the starting XI while David Martin takes a spot on the bench.

Scotland Under-19 defender Ashby only signed his first professional deal with the Hammers over the summer and makes his first start for the club.

    West Brom 0-0 Brentford

Brentford play some lovely stuff but they can mix it too. They launch a long throw into the box that is met by Charlie Goode but not with anywhere near the requisite power to threaten David Button.

    West Brom 0-0 Brentford

Oh, superb chance for West Brom early on at the Hawthorns. It's gone to the debutant Conor Gallagher, who arrives in the box to meet a Matt Phillips cross but somehow volley over the bar.

    Should be 1-0.

Hull saw off Leeds in the last round, winning on penalties at Elland Road following a 1-1 draw.

The Tigers haven't had a particularly good time of it of late, dropping into League One after a second-half-of-the-season collapse following the sale of Jarrod Bowen to tonight's opponent in January.

They have, though, won two out of two in the league this season, suggesting they may just be righting the ship.

City's dangerman is forward Malik Wilks, who scored their goal at Leeds and the winner in their win over Crewe at the weekend.

  9. 'Momentum is important'published at 18:53 British Summer Time 22 September 2020

West Ham v Hull (19:30 BST)

The mood around the Hammers wasn't helped by the reaction to the sale of Grady Diangana, with captain Mark Noble tweeting his displeasure soon after the confirmation of the deal with West Brom.

Further more, West Ham haven't really bolstered their squad so far, although they are reportedly continuing to pursue Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski and others., external

"These cup games are vital because they give an opportunity for players who may not have featured in the early Premier League matches, to show us what they can do in a competitive environment," said Moyes in his programme notes for tonight's game.

"As far this cup tie is concerned, momentum is important. Every time we cross that white line, we aim to be competitive and winning breeds optimism and confidence."

West Ham v Hull (19:30 BST)

There is not such thing as calm consistency where West Ham are concerned. Things are either brilliant or awful, and more often than not the latter.

They've not had a good start to the season, losing at home to Newcastle before suffering a second successive league defeat (albeit from an improved display) at Arsenal.

In between the two they saw off Charlton comfortably to book tonight's tie with Hull. But with the sound of knives being sharpened in the air, you fear for David Moyes if they bomb out of this competition and fail to quickly pick up in the Premier League.

  12. Team newspublished at 18:48 British Summer Time 22 September 2020

West Ham v Hull City (19:30 BST)

West Ham boss David Moyes makes one change to the side that won against Charlton in the last round. Aji Alese starts in defence in place of Arthur Masuaku.

Jack Wilshere also returns to the matchday squad for the first time this season on the bench.

Hull boss Grant McCann hands a full debut to Austrian winger Thomas Mayer who is among several changes to the side that won at Leeds on penalties.

George Long starts in goal after recovering from injury, while the likes of Richie Smallwood, Brandon Fleming, Callum Jones and Josh Magennis also come into the starting XI.

  14. 'We need to respect every team'published at 18:45 British Summer Time 22 September 2020

    Newport v Watford (19:00 BST)

    Vladimir IvicImage source, PA Media

Watford have yet to lose this season, although they needed a late equaliser and penalty shootout to beat Oxford in the last round.

Boss Vladimir Ivic took charge this summer after their relegation to the Championship.

This is his first job in England.

“We need to respect every team, it doesn’t matter which category they are in, because if you don’t respect them then you cannot win," the Serb said.

“I ask my players to respect the team but we need to show our quality to win the game. If we don’t do that, we cannot win.

"Our target is to reach the next round and to win the game and we need to work to prepare for the game."

  15. 'Free hit' for Newportpublished at 18:42 British Summer Time 22 September 2020

    Newport v Watford (19:00 BST)

This is already a sixth game of the season for Newport, who have four points from two games in League Two and have played two Carabao Cup games and one in the EFL Trophy.

"We’ve got a tough game against quality opposition on Tuesday night and for us, it’s a free hit," said boss Michael Flynn.

"They’re all going to be quality players. They’ve come down from the Premier League, so we’ve got to work on their formations and patterns of play to disrupt and cause them problems."

    Newport v Watford (19:00 BST)

This is one of only two Carabao Cup third-round ties not involving a Premier League side - although Watford were in the top flight last season.

Newport County could make a bit of club history if they win - they have never been in the fourth round of the League/EFL/Carabao/Milk Cup before. They have not even been this far since 1962.

The clubs have not met in a competitive game since March 1978 (a 2-2 draw in Division Four).

  18. Man Utd's Garner handed full Watford debutpublished at 18:31 British Summer Time 22 September 2020

    Newport v Watford (19:00 BST)

Here's how League Two Newport County and Championship side Watford line up for their first meeting since March 1978.

Newport boss Mike Flynn selects Tristan Abrahams and Padraig Amond to lead the line against the Hornets, who remain without Andre Gray, Isaac Success, Ismaila Sarr and Gerard Deulofeu.

Manchester United loanee James Garner gets his full debut for the visitors.

Newport XI: Townsend, Haynes, Labadie, Cooper, Dolan, Amond, Sheehan, Abrahams, Bennett, Demetriou, Shephard

Watford XI: Bachmann, Dawson, Garner, Murray, Sierralta, Pussetto, Sinclair, Agyakwa, Stevenson, Crichlow, Phillips

  19. Contrasting fortunespublished at 18:28 British Summer Time 22 September 2020

West Brom v Brentford (19:00 BST)

Brentford have already seen off one Premier League side in the Carabao Cup this season. They produced a superb display to see off a very strong Southampton XI at St Mary's.

"It was a performance where we definitely showed we can compete with a Premier League opponent," said boss Thomas Frank afterwards. You've been warned, West Brom.

In contrast, Baggies boss Slaven Bilic has had a rough couple of weeks, culminating in getting sent off at Everton at the weekend and then charged today with "improper conduct".

The charge could result in up to a two-match touchline ban if evidence of abusive or insulting language is found. But that won't affect tonight's game.

Brentford lost last season's play-off final to Fulham - a heartbreaking end to a campaign that had contained so much promise. For much of the post-lockdown resolution they looked unbeatable, but stuttered right at the end before limping to defeat at Wembley.

A new stadium this season, though, and a fresh start. It's gone pretty well so far. A win at the weekend over Huddersfield got them up and running after the opening weekend loss to Birmingham.
