Pascal Gross normally plays 10-15 yards further up the pitch, operating just behind the striker but this evening he will have to play a more disciplined roll.

He has a good range of passing, he has great energy levels - he'll cover 13km easy tonight, that's for sure.

He'll get around the pitch and he'll be busy.

Thomas Stockting: Pep needs to deploy Sterling out wide. A real threat with the ball at his feet but, so far, Torres has served it up for him TWICE only for Raheem to make a hash out of it. If City want the title back this year they need a better finisher.

If Sterling could shoot he'd score 60 a season.

It has been a fabulous start to the season for Everton, who cannot be accused of failing to back manager Carlo Ancelotti in the transfer market.

Two of Everton's expensive summer recruits, midfielder Allan and Colombian play-maker James Rodriguez are included in the pretty strong starting line-up named by Ancelotti for the Goodison Park clash.

It is 1995 since Everton last won a trophy. For a club of this size, that is way too long.

Dean Henderson, in the United net, clears away well.

  7. 'Ancelotti has solved his midfield problem'published at 19:48 British Summer Time 30 September 2020

    Everton 0-0 West Ham

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Expectations are high after the way the start [of the season] has transpired. The signings have obviously given the club a big lift.

Many times Everton have had a reasonable start to a season and then made changes for the cup competitions. Carlo Ancelotti has been very clever on when he's made his changes. Bringing back James Rodriguez and Allan shows his intent to try and go far in this cup competition.

What was startling for Everton last season was the lack of ability to win the ball back and they couldn't get from box to box. It was something Carlo had to solve.

James [Rodriguez] has taken all the headlines but it's Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure who have come in and given everyone else the license to go and play football.

He seems to have solved, at the moment, that midfield problem.

Brighton v Manchester United (19:45 BST)

Brighton boss Graham Potter, speaking to Sky Sports: "We have to start again. Another game. We want to win and go to the next round. But we face a good team.

"We are excited to be here and want to play well. Our attitude in the previous two games has been good. Difficult conditions with the rain."

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: "You have to take each stage of the season as it comes. It will be a long one. But we want to win.

"You need to take the situation in context. Some of our players haven't played more than one game since we got back. We are a few weeks behind some teams. We need these players through the season. Some performances today will make my decision more difficult on Sunday."
