Pascal Gross normally plays 10-15 yards further up the pitch, operating just behind the striker but this evening he will have to play a more disciplined roll.

Two of Everton's expensive summer recruits, midfielder Allan and Colombian play-maker James Rodriguez are included in the pretty strong starting line-up named by Ancelotti for the Goodison Park clash.

It is 1995 since Everton last won a trophy. For a club of this size, that is way too long.

Expectations are high after the way the start [of the season] has transpired. The signings have obviously given the club a big lift.

Many times Everton have had a reasonable start to a season and then made changes for the cup competitions. Carlo Ancelotti has been very clever on when he's made his changes. Bringing back James Rodriguez and Allan shows his intent to try and go far in this cup competition.

What was startling for Everton last season was the lack of ability to win the ball back and they couldn't get from box to box. It was something Carlo had to solve.

James [Rodriguez] has taken all the headlines but it's Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure who have come in and given everyone else the license to go and play football.

He seems to have solved, at the moment, that midfield problem.

Raheem Sterling has had enough chances to claim a first-half hat-trick.

Ferran Torres is having another lively game.

Riyad Mahrez tees up a decent chance for the Spaniard but he can't finish.
