Kris Jefferson: Do Newcastle even have an attacking coach? Seems their only tactic is to try and hit a long ball over the top and in behind. There is little to no creative passing in the final third

Newcastle generally have 30% possession and hit on the counter attack. I would love them to come and impose themselves and say 'we're Premier League Newcastle' but that hasn't been the case.

I've been a bit disappointed... Ryan Fraser, play forward more, give Callum Wilson the opportunities with crosses. It's very easy for me on the sidelines when Steve Bruce has a lot of games and thinks they'll nick one on the counter atack.

Brentford have missed chances, they have the Championship's top goalscorer on the bench...

Will we see former Newcastle striker Ivan Toney in the second half?

Kyle: Newcastle finished the half better but we are lucky not to be behind Brentford have had better chances they should be in front. Newcastle have to be much better in the 2nd half.

I would say Brentford had the better opportunities, Newcastle had one or two moments. I'd say 0-0 is fair, neither team has grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck.

    And that's the break.

Big chances for both sides but it remains goalless.

Newcastle's chances have come out of nowhere...

This time Callum Wilson goes striding through the middle, tries to commit Luke Daniels but the Brentford goalkeeper stays on his feet and denies the Newcastle forward.

It breaks to Ryan Fraser, but his tame effort is cleared off the line.

Newcastle deal with the corner, but Brentford stroll forward again with Emiliano Marcondes on the left. He flicks it on for Sergi Canos but the winger lets it slip out of play.

    Conditions getting a little tricky...

Josh Dasilva is the best player by a country mile. Brentford are really lucky to have him but I tell you what there will be a lot of Premier League teams looking at him.

He's got composure and can work the ball really well. I've been saying it all evening and probably boring people, but he's a quality player.

    Brentford 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle are starting to grow into this after Brentford's early flurry of chances.

Sean Longstaff is ticked off for a foul in midfield, however, and the hosts can sling another ball into the box - Isaac Hayden can only glance a header behind for a corner.

Jonjo Shelvey has been dropping deep to pick the ball up but this time he finds space in midfield to pick out Ryan Fraser with a lovely lofted pass.

The winger takes a touch and fires goalwards on the bounce from the edge of the box, but Luke Daniels does well to palm it over the crossbar.

    Big chance for Newcastle.

The rain is picking up at the Brentford Community Stadium and with the markings on the pitch still visible from London Irish's last game it almost looks like an old clip from Rugby Special at the moment.

Great hold up play from Callum Wilson and he spreads it right during a Newcastle attack.

The visitors haven't had loads of the ball but when they have Steve Bruce's side have looked dangerous. Brentford will be rueing those missed opportunities.

The pitch looks like it's going to cut up, there were players slipping at the start of the game and I think it will have an impact.

Another huge chance for Brentford. How did Sergi Canos miss that?

The hosts could have three or four in the opening 25 minutes.

The corner finds Ethan Pinnock at the back post and he nods back across goal for Canos, who looks set to head in from close range but turns his effort wide.

The Bees winger has his head in his hands after that.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank turned away in anguish when Saman Ghoddos struck the bar. He wants his team to really put the pressure on Newcastle. He was visibly disgusted when they were too slow playing the ball out of defence a few moments ago.

  17. CLOSE!published at 23 mins

    Brentford 0-0 Newcastle

And Newcastle are nearly made to pay at the other end!

Josh Dasilva wriggles down the right for Brentford and pulls a low ball back into the penalty box.

It reaches Saman Ghoddos but the Iran winger scuffs his effort and it leaps off the turf and up on to the crossbar. A clean strike and the Bees might have been ahead.

That's a wonderful ball from Ryan Fraser.

The winger nips down the left and winds a low cross along the six-yard box, but no Newcastle player can get a touch on it.

    Better from the visitors.

Tariqe Fosu-Henry slings a diagonal pass into the path of Saman Ghoddos but the Brentford forward can't escape in the box. The hosts are stretching that Newcastle back line, though.

That's an ambitious touch from Emiliano Marcondes, looking to take the ball on his chest rather than head it at goal when that seemed to be the better option - instead it pops up and away from the Brentford man. Think I'd have gone down winded for the rest of the half.
