Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois: "It was a good game for us, especially the first half. We controlled them well, scored two goals.

"The second half they started with higher intensity and got the goal, it was a bit unlucky for me, but we tried to remain calm and we got the third goal.

"It's a good position for us now but we know Anfield is always a hard place to go."

Borussia Dortmund's Jude Bellingham, speaking to BT Sport: "They're one of the best, if not the best in the world. The way they go to regain the ball back after losing it is world class. To give Kevin de Bruyne that much time in the box he's going to score and that much time around the box he's going to put a ball in the box that damages us and it did. It's a frustrating one but we move on."

On his goal that was disallowed: "I definitely think I won the ball fairly, it's a bit frustrating in a time when they've got so many cameras watching the game they don't wait for me to put the ball in the net and then check it. It's football, it's life, just got to get on with it. All I've been told is I've been booked and it's a free kick for them. I think they should have checked it. Apparently I've got my studs up, caught the goalkeeper and it's a foul."

Karim Benzema has now appeared in 108 Champions League matches for Real Madrid - the most by a non-Spaniard. Only Sergio Ramos (128), Raul (130) and Iker Casillas (150) have played more times for the club in the competition.

Real Madrid have progressed from 15 of their last 16 Champions League knockout matches after winning the opening leg, only failing to do so against Ajax in the 2018-19 last 16.

Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to BT Sport: "If you want to go to the semi-final, you have to earn the right to do so. We didn't do that tonight, especially in the first half. The only good thing I can say, apart from the goal, is it's only the first half of the tie.

"We just didn't play good enough football to cause Real Madrid more problems.

"We made it too easy for them. These mistakes can happen. We didn't deserve a lot more but that one goal and the second half was OK. It gives us a lifeline."

On replacing Naby Keita in the first half: "It's not a big story. I don't like it. He wasn't the only one. It was tactical. I could have done a few more changes in that moment."

On what they need in the second half: "Intensity with the ball especially. You cannot defend the speed of Real Madrid when you give them the ball at the wrong moments. If you lose ball in the right moment it's OK. We lost the ball, so many easy passes. You have really quick and world class players in one on ones. We have to be better in possession."

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to BT Sport: "Better to win than draw. 2-1, Champions League, we are going there to win the game. In the first half we were not clever with the ball. The second half was much better, we had two or three clear chances to score the second and third but it didn't happen. After we concede 1-1 we scored the final goal.

"Dortmund are strong, a good quality with the players they have and the quality it is difficult to do what we want to do it but 2-1 and we have a good chance next week.

"We are going to watch the game. We will adjust a few things to go there and try to win the game. Next Leeds and then we go to Germany to try and win the game.

"Borussia Dortmund is a typical club from the Champions League. We have one more game there and with the result 2-1 we will try to score the goals there to win.

"We are going to analyse what we have to do like we have done for four or five months. Every game we play to win."

On Phil Foden: "Second half he was a threat for them. He had two or three chances to score and finally he scored."

Mohamed Salah has scored 27 goals, four more than he managed last season, whilst equalling his tally from 2018-19. Only in 2017-18 (44) did he score more for Liverpool in a single campaign.

Liverpool

Liverpool captain Georginio Wijnaldum to BT Sport: "It was difficult. We played against a good side. The way we did in the first half wasn't good. We lost it quickly with simple passes. Two moments of not concentrating enough and they scored.

"We weren't sharp enough.

"We said in the second half we have to play our football and not lose the ball too easily and concentrate more. They were a few times dangerous with long balls. We played our own game [at times after the break] and that's why we scored. Unfortuntately they scored and that makes it more difficult.

"It [the goal] gave us confidence. We hoped for a better result."

More from Kevin de Bruyne, speaking to BT Sport: "We saw the way they played. They played really well with the ball. It causes some problems sometimes. I think in the first half we had a little bit of difficulty finding the chances but in the second half we created a few.

“We probably should have scored a little bit more but obviously when they came back to 1-1, that was a little shame but it happens.

"I think the reaction was really good so to get the win is good. We know 2-1 is a tricky score but at least we are ahead for the second leg.”

Liverpool have lost their last four games against Real Madrid. That is their joint longest streak of European defeats against one team - level with Benfica from 1984 to 2010.

No other side have ever beaten them four times in Europe.

This was Liverpool's 10th defeat in 2021. The last time they lost so many games before May was in 1954. They got relegated that year.

Kevin de Bruyne, speaking to BT Sport about his pass for Manchester City's winner: "I try to look up before I get the ball, try to get a picture of what is happening."

He added: "The season in September started this way and never stopped. It has been an incredible run of games, the team has responded well to the challenge this year.

"We are in a good situation and a little bit privileged because we are able to compete for every trophy. We try to prepare game by game."

Phil Foden is the third youngest Englishman to score in a Champions League quarter-final, behind only Alan Smith in 2001 for Leeds (20 years and 158 days) and Theo Walcott in 2009 for Arsenal (20 years and 30 days).

This result brings to an end Liverpool's three-game winning run. It's a ninth defeat in 16 games.

Big week for Real Madrid. They host Barcelona in El Clasico on Saturday, also at their training ground.

They're only three points off top in La Liga.
