    Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool

Lucas Vazquez crosses from the right and Karim Benzema just leaves the ball go when there was a proper heading opportunity. He points to something - was it the floodlights or did he expect a defender to clear first? A waste anyway.

Vinicius Jr (20y 268d) is the second youngest scorer for Real Madrid in a Champions League knockout match, after Raul (18y 253d) in March 1996 against Juventus.

There is no contact at all with Emre Can's foot. Was Rodri holding his knee or his face?!

The referee goes to the pitchside monitor to have a look at several replays and sees that Emre Can doesn't catch Rodri on his head, so overturns his original decision to give a spot kick.

Tom Lawrence: Whatever performance Trent put in tonight, people would make up nonsense that he was defensively bad, purely to drive the agenda. It's pathetic honestly.

TAA is showing Southgate his limitations regarding defending tonight. Going to be a long evening for him I think. Hope I am proved wrong.

    Man City 1-0 Borussia Dortmund

Manchester City aren't going gung ho to add more goals just yet. They are taking their time and avoiding any slip ups of their own at the back. Marco Reus tries to get onto a ball through the defence but Ederson is first to it.

    Vinicius Jr (27 mins)

Real Madrid take a deserved lead and it's a very nice goal.

Toni Kroos, standing halfway in his own half, sprays a wonderful ball 60 yards down the pitch. Vinicius Jr takes it down perfectly on his chest, Nat Phillips can't catch him, and he slots home from the edge of the box.

Jude Bellingham has been very composed on the ball. He's a very imposing figure: strong, big legs and physique. He's also talking and shouting at his team-mates, he can go forward and get back...

And he's only 17! What a future ahead of him.

  16. Postpublished at 20:25 British Summer Time 6 April 2021

    Real Madrid 0-0 Liverpool

Ozan Kabak has done well at the back for Liverpool so far. Karim Benzema latches onto a fine through ball but Kabak tracks him all the way and blocks his shot. He was probably lucky that wasn't someone quicker though.

Manchester City have now scored 18 goals since they last conceded in the Champions League, the longest run of unanswered goals in the competition’s history.

That's Emre Can again! He's given the ball away two or three times already and you can't do that - you can't give it to someone like Kevin de Bruyne.

De Bruyne put the afterburners on, he's four yards out and the skipper is not going to miss from there. That's the devastation that Manchester City have in their locker: pace, power, they are relentless in front of goal.

  19. Postpublished at 20:22 British Summer Time 6 April 2021

    Real Madrid 0-0 Liverpool

While a lot has been made of Real Madrid being without their first-choice centre-backs it's worth remembering that Eder Militao cost them £42m and Nacho has scored at a World Cup for Spain.

Bresla Stephenson: Trent has started defensively poorly. Southgate will be sitting at home nodding sagely.

Tushar Vyas: TAA getting defensively exposed again! How can any England fans and supporters justify their anger at him being left out of the recent qualification games.
